I feel you on criticizing ADTR, Finn. I really disliked their last couple releases (aside from a few songs) and they’re definitely one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time. It hurts me to not like EVERYTHING they release but I just tell myself they aren’t making music to please ME. They’re doing it for a living and making music that can be easily consumed by a wider audience. I respect the hell out of that and hope they keep doing it so they can keep going. Even if their new stuff isn’t as “good” as Homesick, it’s still cool that they’re still going.

I do find the more negative or middling reactions towards the song to be interesting. When I primarily listened to rap and r&b for 8 years, I was used to rappers like Kendrick Lamar going for a completely different sound on every album and getting celebrated for it (eg Kendrick won the Pulitzer music award in 2018). In rock, people don’t seem to really want that from their favorites and I find that to be an incredibly limiting aspect of the rock fanbase. Rock needs to start charting new, commercially successful territory rather than sticking to these 30 year old formulas. At some point, you have to find a way to move on from the Nirvana fallout (seriously, the radiation of Nirvana’s debut is lasting longer than the after effects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima).

I'm glad I tuned out the most recent ADTR releases since CC after hearing small bits, but this new song grew on me quickly and I've enjoyed it the past week bumping it in the gym. What's octane core?? Never heard about that in Germany. Does everything need to be named somehow? There's Punk and Metal and Core and overall we just say rock. Genres should be fluent and there should be no boundries. I'm listening to "Rock" since Korn debuted in 1995 and listen to so many genres and bands since then, that to me nowadays it feels like everyone is surching for that one neche where one alone can sa, what is good and what is bad. Everyone wants to be right and right alone and does not accept other opinions - the whole Rock community in the states became so sadly all gatekeepers instead of keeping it divers. Here in Germany I feel much better listening to rock with metalheads, hiphop heads or edm heads and all can enjoy just guitars and screams and melodies. I wish more people would be open minded.
@Kekktye
@Kekktye 2 жыл бұрын
@@sgefrascz8123 Oh I completely agree. Genres, especially past the Warped Tour era don't hold much meaning and should really be regarded more fluidly. It's just in A Day To Remember's case, their genre change has marked a shift away from their old style and towards a much more common, stylistically bankrupt version of Hardcore. "Octane-core" isn't a genre. It's just how Finn described their new style because of many common "octane" radio-rock bands as of recent. It isn't as if genre is useless or no longer relevant, just that lines have been blurred so making sure distinctions is difficult and only enabling to gatekeepers. In this case it's almost the opposite, though. I enjoy some radio-friendly hardcore, but I'd argue ADTR's strength is not with that sound and they'd certainly benefit from looking at their older work.

Whilst I understand your criticisms at the same time these are guys in their mid-late 30s, their first 5 albums were that pop-punk/metalcore amalgamation, they obviously wanted to move on from that sound and take some risks and see what sticks which imo is commendable and respectable, sticking to the same sound is fine as well but it will never expose you to a larger audience and can cause creative stagnation. I didn’t like You’re Welcome overall but I can respect that they tried to expand their palate and do something different. I actually really liked the direction they were going with Bad Vibrations and Paranoia is still an absolute banger to me. Hopefully after the misstep with You’re Welcome they may go back in that direction again, maybe with some more of the metal elements as heard in this song. Just my take on it tbh, if I want to listen to a band still pumping out pop-punk in their 40s/50s I already have Green Day and Blink-182 for that…..

I am right with you on ADTR. Absolutely one of my favorite bands ever. It isn't that I am against a band changing, it's just that this was a big step down in their songwriting and it felt like an attempt at becoming a clear channel radio rock band. Even this new song to me is too reminiscent of five finger death punch or something. The A Day to Benjamin comment was spot on. The vocal melodies are not up to ADTR standards. The choruses are trying to be catchy rather than being good and because they are good they are catchy like pretty much everything before you're welcome.

Isn't this just the classic argument of: if they still sounded like they did at the beginning of their careers people would complain it was getting stale, but if they shift their sound people aren't happy either? I really enjoyed 'You're Welcome' because it was still a really fun album where they were clearly experimenting with the poppier side of their sound. This tune on the other hand isn't their classic sound and isn't very experimental either so definitely a weird creative decision from ADTR.

I know you want that old pop punk sound but to write that kind of old stuff and have it feel exciting and have it feel worthy and fresh to them is tough . Sure they can do that but as these bands mature they become all about the song itself and making them as great as possible which means letting each idea develop itself . I’m sure they will have plenty of pop punk type verses in the future . they won’t lose that it’s just not prevalent in most recent stuff but they will have plenty of that pop punk sound as they go on.

@michael ftwhh was great for it's time, but listening to it now, it's so 1 dimensional. Super simple, generic, and the only reason I listen to it now is for nostalgia. Same could be said for homesick, it's gotta be in my top 3 influential albums in my life, but going back to it is weird because of how simple the songs are. I found common courtesy to be their best as it had so many more layers/sounds/production add ins while still keeping the metalcore/pop-punk vibe

@@korman7 true, I'm super biased because ftwhah was the album that got me into this genre. Tons of highlights on there. I don't have the same connection with homesick

Sounds like ADTR trying to be Falling in Reverse. You could easily replace ADTRs singer with Ronnie Radke on this and it would fit.

Hated this review, but opinions are opinions. It was cool to see a ton of other reactors come in with this same bias after the last record, and quickly realized, oh shit, this is a banger! Which I agree with.

To be honest, anything slightly better than anything they've released after "You're welcome" was going to be a banger.

I liked the song but it sounded like I Prevail and Wage War. Electric Callboy’s new song “Fuck Boy” is definitely something that old ADTR would make but with zoomer lyrics.

I absolutely agree and I miss pop-punk with breakdowns - but I’m a sucker for this current era Cody-Core. Funnily enough, I’m LESS enthusiastic about Wage War than I am with current FIR or this from ADTR. But with him co-writing and inspiring so many top metalcore songs right now, I’m a happy guy.

Honestly this song could have been on Memphis May Fire's Remade in Misery, which I listened to multiple times, and I just forgot about it. That's how I feel about both.

If the cleans would be replaced with pop punk verses and choruses this song song would be soooooo much better. I didnt like this song that much but its a step in the right direction.

Song is solid, but not fully grabbed by it. I feel like if the second verse was heavy I would be more hype about it. Kinda like what Chunk! No Captain Chunk's song "Bitter". My opinion that was a perfect comeback song.

Couldn't agree more Finn with your overall thoughts on them/this song. Coming from a guy who has stated out loud that they are one of my favorite bands of all time. Great breakdown in this song, but unlike other songs I love, I can't say I'll buy it on itunes. I will say I like "everything we need" because I always want one good acoustic song per album. Pleasing everybody is hard though, obviously. The last thing I'll say is...in terms of a "rock radio" song that made it to my local station back in the day that maybe normies liked... was "all i want". I prefer that way over this. It was fast paced.
