I feel you on criticizing ADTR, Finn. I really disliked their last couple releases (aside from a few songs) and they’re definitely one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time. It hurts me to not like EVERYTHING they release but I just tell myself they aren’t making music to please ME. They’re doing it for a living and making music that can be easily consumed by a wider audience. I respect the hell out of that and hope they keep doing it so they can keep going. Even if their new stuff isn’t as “good” as Homesick, it’s still cool that they’re still going.

I do find the more negative or middling reactions towards the song to be interesting. When I primarily listened to rap and r&b for 8 years, I was used to rappers like Kendrick Lamar going for a completely different sound on every album and getting celebrated for it (eg Kendrick won the Pulitzer music award in 2018). In rock, people don’t seem to really want that from their favorites and I find that to be an incredibly limiting aspect of the rock fanbase. Rock needs to start charting new, commercially successful territory rather than sticking to these 30 year old formulas. At some point, you have to find a way to move on from the Nirvana fallout (seriously, the radiation of Nirvana’s debut is lasting longer than the after effects of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima).

What's octane core?? Never heard about that in Germany. Does everything need to be named somehow? There's Punk and Metal and Core and overall we just say rock. Genres should be fluent and there should be no boundries. I'm listening to "Rock" since Korn debuted in 1995 and listen to so many genres and bands since then, that to me nowadays it feels like everyone is surching for that one neche where one alone can sa, what is good and what is bad. Everyone wants to be right and right alone and does not accept other opinions - the whole Rock community in the states became so sadly all gatekeepers instead of keeping it divers. Here in Germany I feel much better listening to rock with metalheads, hiphop heads or edm heads and all can enjoy just guitars and screams and melodies. I wish more people would be open minded.
@Kekktye2 жыл бұрын
@@sgefrascz8123 Oh I completely agree. Genres, especially past the Warped Tour era don't hold much meaning and should really be regarded more fluidly. It's just in A Day To Remember's case, their genre change has marked a shift away from their old style and towards a much more common, stylistically bankrupt version of Hardcore. "Octane-core" isn't a genre. It's just how Finn described their new style because of many common "octane" radio-rock bands as of recent. It isn't as if genre is useless or no longer relevant, just that lines have been blurred so making sure distinctions is difficult and only enabling to gatekeepers. In this case it's almost the opposite, though. I enjoy some radio-friendly hardcore, but I'd argue ADTR's strength is not with that sound and they'd certainly benefit from looking at their older work.

Whilst I understand your criticisms at the same time these are guys in their mid-late 30s, their first 5 albums were that pop-punk/metalcore amalgamation, they obviously wanted to move on from that sound and take some risks and see what sticks which imo is commendable and respectable, sticking to the same sound is fine as well but it will never expose you to a larger audience and can cause creative stagnation. I didn’t like You’re Welcome overall but I can respect that they tried to expand their palate and do something different. I actually really liked the direction they were going with Bad Vibrations and Paranoia is still an absolute banger to me. Hopefully after the misstep with You’re Welcome they may go back in that direction again, maybe with some more of the metal elements as heard in this song. Just my take on it tbh, if I want to listen to a band still pumping out pop-punk in their 40s/50s I already have Green Day and Blink-182 for that…..

Even this new song to me is too reminiscent of five finger death punch or something. The A Day to Benjamin comment was spot on. The vocal melodies are not up to ADTR standards. I know you want that old pop punk sound but to write that kind of old stuff and have it feel exciting and have it feel worthy and fresh to them is tough .
