Not sure why the voices had to be portrayed as strange and distorted, that just seemed to be gratuitously trying to make the phemenom seem disturbing.

I hear voices sometimes from migraine auras. They say neutral things like, "Hi Steph!" or, "I'm over here!"

When I had an eating disorder, I had a voice in my head that was like a personification of the ED, but I think it was because I was in bad health and was headchey all the time.

VERY RISKY. What happens when one of the "bad" voices tells you to harm others? "Embracing" the voices is reckless and quite frankly selfish because the "bad" voices can be considered a public danger.

If hearing voices isn't necessarily an illness, what else could it be? Magic?

***** Hearing voices in your head is pretty normal. I assume you are familiar with with some of it like subvocalization, or hearing your own voice in your head. Where it can become a mental illness is when you hear voices in your head which you do not recognize as your own, or do not recognize as being generated by your own brain. Regardless, hearing voices is always a generation of the brain. It has yet to be demonstrated to be anything else, so asking if it is magic is a little odd.

Mark T I agree. If someone were to claim hearing voices (in the sense described in this video) were anything else, I would need evidence of such an outlandish claim.

the problem we are having here is we have eyes to see, and they say seeing is believing, now take away sight, no more belief. which means people arent smart enough to figure life out if they cant even figure out their senses

WHAT ELSE do you expect ?? We have *killed **_actual_** human communication* .... and replaced that with virtual alternatives (like TV, internet, sms ,etc). We have also *killed public spaces* of communication (like coffee houses, town halls, fairs) *communication* is a _basic human need_ (like sex & food) ... if deprived, our *social* human brain is bound to respond like this

This is ridiculous! She says "If you call it an 'Auditory Hallucination' there's nowhere to go except to take medication to fix that." as if what these people are experiencing could be something other than an auditory hallucination. That's exactly what they are. This is a mental health issue and needs to be taken seriously. The idea that this isn't a thing that needs to be fixed is nothing short of irresponsible and dangerous.

Agreed!

+Nicholas Walls You're missing the point. It doesn't matter what you call it. Some call it an auditory hallucination; some call it demons, some call the voices spirits. But the point is that for many people, medication doesn't help! And when they explore what the meaning is behind their voices, and how to cope with them, some people can live well WITH the voices -- which is crucial -- especially when medication does not work.

+Andi Haro The issue that I draw is more the partial denial of the problem on a fundamental level. While it's clear that medication isn't the solution for some people, this an approach that tells the person hearing the voices "No no, there's nothing wrong with you shouldn't have to get it fixed" and that's dangerous. Admitting that some people take different routes to gaining control of the situation is one thing, but it should never be approached as not a problem. There may be people who desperately need intervention that hear this and take it to mean that they don't need help and they're fine the way they are, and as a result of that belief endanger others. This shouldn't be ever viewed as anything but a serious mental health issue that deserves attention.

+Nicholas Walls I know a lot of people who hear voices -- through the work I do. They are regular people who are living with this often challenging experience. It can be excruciatingly difficult for folks, and none of them think everything is fine and dandy. They go to Hearing Voices groups so that they can connect with other people, feel that they are not 'alone' in their experience, talk about and process what is happening to them -- which is very healthy -- and share and learn coping strategies from one another. The groups are not sending the message "nothing is wrong with you" -- but the message it sends to voice hearers is that what they are experiencing is 'real' to them and that just because a person hears voices, it does not mean that s/he is necessarily a "sick" person. Some voice hearers are able to cope with the voices and have learned ways to live well WITH them. Why should they walk around with the stigma of being a "sick" or "mad" or "crazy" person if they are functioning well? Did you know that homosexuality used to be seen as a mental illness? Also, some people have voices that are comforting and helpful to them. Would you say that these people are sick as well? I just think there is so much negative stereotyping and stigma about people who hear voices. We can't lump them all into one category based on these stereotypes.
@NicholasWallsRumpleCragstan9 жыл бұрын
+Andi Haro I completely agree with you on your points. The groups as a whole are a good thing, they bring a sense of community to people who would otherwise feel isolated. I didn't draw issue with the concept of the group therapy sessions, more with the viewpoint expressed initially that these aren't hallucinations and there's nothing wrong. When I say 'wrong' I mean it not in the moral sense, but rather that their brains are not behaving in the normal way and that attention is deserved on that fact. I think that it has to be a very delicate balancing act between accepting them as people and treating them as human beings, without forgetting the fact that it is an illness. I absolutely believe that many (even most!) are regular people who just have an additional challenge in their life, who deserve to be given the respect of any other person. But for some it poses a danger to themselves and the people around them, and for that reason all cases need to be taken seriously rather than hand-waved away with denials. Keep the group therapy, ditch the denial.
