I think the problem arises from the secular idea of love which has been romanticized so heavily. Love as a feeling is regulated to the exact same “physics” as other emotions like anger, sadness and fear. Our emotions aren’t spontaneous and aren’t controlled by external factors, that’s why we are able to overcome our emotions (feelings). This is seen as a good thing in every instance other than love. If we focus on “feeling in love” as the threshold for staying in a marriage….no one would stay married, divorce rates would be at 100%. I have yet to speak to a couple that has been together for any length of time that hasn’t had many periods where love as a feeling faded or was non existent but by working through it and choosing to love, the feelings returned.
