I like the hybrid on all. Good idea. Less manufacturing costs. It is always nice to have a hot rod model. Will a TRD version continue? I give Toyota a LOT of credit for not jumping on the electric-only bandwagon. No range anxiety with a hybrid, and you get more power, and much better MPG than a gas-only version.
@cablebrain969110 ай бұрын
In concept, I like that too. But keep in mind, maintenance/repair-wise you are having to take care of many more components. I’d love to see a maintenance cost vs. gas-savings cost comparison between an ICE version and a hybrid version. Also a reliability comparison between the two.

I've been a Toyota driver my whole life. Parents got me a Corolla as my first car. After that it was a Camry SE: unfortunately it didn't last that long (think it was the dealership didn't correctly fix the engine during the 60K service. Was willing to give Toyota one more chance and got a Prius 2010 (when new). Back then, the Prius really was a great hybrid option: all the hybrid sedans had limited trunk space because their battery was behind the seats (so the seats also didn't fold down). When the 4th gen Prius came out, I thought they were ugly. Was ready to consider another brand or go full EV. Then I saw the new 2023 Prius. I also saw that the Prime can get up to 40 miles EV: great range for my regular everyday driving. So I was obsessed in checking the Toyota site's Prime inventory. When I saw a dealership close enough to me with a XSE Premium just listed, I drove up and made a deposit the day of. Good thing too, because I think the Atlanta area only got 2 XSE Premium Primes in 2023 (now I see the Primes have no inventory at all: guess Toyota is waiting for the 2024 run). Think my car is especially nice (and I do get a lot of head turns) in that it's red (and works well with the Prime's interior red accents). I've also gotten a lot of head turns with people saying they thought it might be a new Tesla model or inquire about what the Prime is like (and many also saying that plug in hybrid like the Prime would be their ideal car type). Now that I am familiar with the new Prius, it is interesting to see what elements in the new Camry are inheriting the Prius. Since the Prius is lighter, I'm assuming its 220 HP still seems peppier and "sporty" compared to the Camry. The Camry probably has more comfort on the highway: I do enjoy highway driving with the Prius, but it probably has tighter suspension and more highway noise due to less insulation. While the Prius is smaller than the Camry, I haven't missed the extra size because the Prius seems to be well optimized with space, and it doesn't blow around on the highway like other compacts. I'm also not finding any issues with its interface (welcoming the instrument panel in front of the steering wheel, and a 12" infotainment screen). Also that it has similar climate buttons as this Camry (IE actually physical buttons vs a Tesla that has everything buried in the touchscreen). One main departure with the Prius vs other new Toyotas is its bottom bumper (the lower vents with silver mouth). My aunt calls my red Prius a Testarossa. Seems the lower grill with the Camry and Corolla is more aggressive (but also probably easier to upkeep from a practical standpoint).

Looks good. I wish it had a torque converter automatic instead of a CVT, but I know Toyota doesn’t do that when it’s hybrid synergy drive. I’ll be interested to see your first drive review impressions but overall it looks like a nice mid cycle refresh.

The heart of the Hybrid Synergy Drive is a power split device which couples the wheels and the main motor generator on the ring gear, to the ICE on the planetary gear set, to a 2nd motor generator on the sun gear. Having a separate transmission, whether a CVT or a torque converter automatic, would be redundant. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5DbdKaph52kh6s

I’m a little surprised that they are using the same platform as the 2018 Camry. It dictates/restricts how the platform might develop over the next 5 years. I recently put some serious miles on a rental Camry hybrid, and found it quite competent. My main gripes were the dash design was inelegant, and the seats weren’t as comfortable as they should be. At low speeds, it used the torque of the electric motor in a way that made it feel quite punchy at part throttle. Full throttle… not so much. And this was only the case while the battery remained within its optimal thermal range. Once it got hot, performance and the hybrid system were degraded. Which is a downside of nickel based batteries they use. Yet it’s overall MPG was still quite good given how it was driven.

SUV's do everything better than 4 door sedans EXCEPT highway mpg, highway wind noise, and handling. Yes, you can throw stiff springs and sticky tires at an SUV but it always become extremely rough riding in the process while cars can have adequate handling characteristics while maintaining civility. Remember that the S class is Mercedes most comfortable vehicle and it ain't an SUV.
