Hey Trent great stuff! My name is Russ, I currently work as a Regional Controller for SkyWest. 3 things I want to say, number1: Good luck in flight school, hopefully the weather cooperates and you have every opportunity to get out and fly everyday. 2: Your are correct with you opinion about SkyWest, it is a fantastic company to work for and is the best regional hands down. They invest in your success every day in every way. 3: I talk to pilots all day and while I help them with there issues I always tell them that they have the greatest job in the world. I also tell them that if I was younger I would go that route. When I tell them how old I am every single one says the same thing, “you’re not too old”. I plan on starting my training in September of this year and staying with SkyWest, by the way I’m 55 and will turn 56 in October, can’t wait. Best of Luck, God Bless!

As you and others have said - You are never too old. I'm 58, and last year I finished my Master's. I'm now considering a PhD program. As you move into the higher licenses and me into (maybe) a Ph.D. At our age, we can be successful. We won't end up continuing for 30 years like the younger crowd. Yet, we can still fulfill that itch - constant learning - wanting to achieve something greater than ourselves. I hope you do push into our aging future... Never stop reaching for the Stars - even if we only get to the moon.

I'm a 51 year old Cybersecurity / Technology entrepreneur. Tried military pilot but told too tall at 6'2+. Then started flight school in 2001 where my first ride with instructore was to be the evening on 9/11. go figure. Then life happened and knew I couldn't become an airline pilot because I did not have a degree. But seeing your videos and knowing they relaxed the stance on education, I have now decided to start heading towards my dream of being an airline pilot. I study and test extremely well and know I can do what you've shown can be done. Just wanted to say thank you and your videos are near perfect with timing and quality. I was 53 when I passed my PPL Checkride last October. I am currently working on my instrument rating (part time). Sadly Sheppard Air does not have a Private Pilot test prep as you mentioned so I used Sportys as well. Now for my instrument and later commercial, I will be using Sheppard for test prep. Sportys videos are great and they will better prepare you when get in the plane but not so well in preparing for the exams. I want to recommend PilotEdge for X-Plane and MSFS 2020. This gives you live ATC which is a critical skill to learn. Now is a great time to get into aviation. Good luck and looking forward to future videos!

Dauntless has a good PPL test prep that is similar in concept to Sheppard (see all the questions), but best to learn “How they got the answer”… but very helpful for those wrote-memorization questions. Cheers!

Learning a lot over a short amount of time is not as good for long-term retention as learning little-by-little over a longer period of time. But, with your anticipated flight schedule, the critical information will come up over and over again, which will help a lot for long-term retention. Things you might forget are random things like emergency transponder codes; basically stuff that just doesn’t come up a lot in day-to-day flying.

Hi Trent. Congrats on your decision to follow your dreams. You're never too old (as long as you pass the medical of course.) I'm also a 53 yr old Canadian pilot (Vancouver) and have been flying for fun since 1988. I think you're doing it right. I always advise people who inquire about flight training to give the cash to the flying school, go hard on the ground school so you have the theory down, then fly at least twice a day once you start flying. It's a great way to retain what you learn in the airplane. I also have been using MSFS since version 2 and it has been a huge help. I'd also recommend filming your flights inside the cockpit with audio over the intercom as it makes a great way to review what went right and what went wrong. Best of luck and I'll keep watching to see how you make out. Blue Skies!

I’m 43 now and got a 93 on m kings school prep for Private. I also got a 93 on my instrument using Sheppard air. I also took the FII (instrument instructor) and IGI tests (instrument ground instructor) all the same day. Yes, I took all 3 instrument tests off studying just the IRA exam on Sheppard for instrument. Only difference on the IGI was a single helicopter question. I got 93, 98 and 92 on all those. I now just took my commercial pilot (CAX) test and got a 95 with Sheppard Air. Sheppard is the key. It’s still good to use King schools (my preferred) or sportys ground school videos to understand more in depth but Sheppard prepares you directly for the exam. I have also passed my private and instrument check rides. Now I can just focus on my commercial checkride.

Good job but it is generally understood that the learning process works best when stretched over time with constant reinforcement exercises. "Cramming" as you describe here will pass the test, but unless you have some incredible gift for retention or memory, most folks will tend to forget the content over the following weeks unless the material is revisited periodically. Again: good job, but I hope that the knowledge sticks over time. Thanks for the insight!!

I'm studying for my instrument written (again... 2nd time taking it because my 1st one timed out...), so based on your recommendation I'll try the Sheppard Air this time (did Sporty's the last time). I'd love to go professional too, but at 62 I think I'm too old for the airlines. But, maybe corporate? I use X-Plane 12 with PilotEdge and fly lots of approaches to rainy minimums. I also have RealSimGear GTN650 and autopilot boxes. Wonderful setup!

I’m following your videos and I love them. I am 49 and I had exactly the same dream and interest as you, I still do but it’s no longer reality for me. Few months ago I texted you about waiting for my medical approval since February. I finally got my answer 2 days ago. They called me to talk to me actually. I have to say my dream got shuttered in a way. After 10 months of communication with FAA by mail they called me that they will approve me for level 3 medical and for me to continue with my training. Based on my flight hrs they will be able to upgrade it to the level 2 , but I’ll probably won’t get level 1. So here is where I’m at. I lost 10 months and of course I stopped flying pending my approval. I didn’t want to waste bunch of money on flying if my medical wasn’t going to be approved. Anyway I’m not giving up yet. I start my studying and flying again. Who knows maybe with some miracle one day I’ll get level 1 medical. Wish me luck, I sure wish you all the best! You’re definitely proving people wrong and giving the rest of us hope. This is also why I’ll continue do everything in my power to try get the level 1.

I used Sporty's, Gleim, and the free King practice questions to prep for my commercial written. I scored a 100%. My approach was not quick, but I was afraid that Sheppard Air would just teach me how to pass the test. And yes, I overprepared and wasted a lot of time, but I wanted to ace just ONE of these blasted FAA exams in my life.

You should make a video on your background. What’s your story? How do you have your pilots license in Canada already? How much flying experience do you have? How did you end up in the States? Is your partner/wife/husband supportive of your flying endeavors? Do you come from a family that flies? How can you afford flying? What do you fly? I’d watch that video 😊

With flying 5 hours a day plus sim time on top of that, don't be surprised if you have relentless "flying dreams" at night. Any time I fly evening flights, something about the brain simulation plus the inner ear disturbance has my brain looping on flying approaches/landings for several hours that night.

Well sir, I must take my hat off for you. I'm also Canadian who did my PPL in PHX, AZ and my IFR and CPL in Florida. Cheaper, faster and converted it to Transport Canada easily. The downside about Canada is the long painful waiting times to get a medical, booking a conversion test and had to wait 3 month afterwards to get my Canadian CPL IR. Make sure you get your CPL multi add on in USA. In Canada, you have to do 2 rides for the multi alone. 1st ride to get Initial Multi group 3(Multi VFR), then another ride to get multi group 1 which is the multi ifr. Hope that helps. I support your work.

Knocking out exams is definitely a way to go - there is nothing useful or practical to remember on the FAA exams especially the ATP - you just need a passing test - normally i'd caution to watch out for the 24-month expiration, but that is not an issue for you. Rote memorization - recognizing the correct answer is all you need to be able to do. I know it might be putting the cart before the horse - but aviation headset - always try to preserve what hearing you have left - one thing i wish i had done when i was younger was wear the damn headset - noise cancelling etc - now and whatnot - you'll need a different headset for training versus a headset when you get to a jet at the airline - on your training aircraft you'll need an over-the-ear headset noise cancelling if you want to get fancy - when you start doing instrument flying - bluetooth will be helpful if you have to call a phone number to get IFR clearance to take off from a non-towered field - so it's more of a convenience for a brief period of time in your aviation career - you can be cheap as you want for your training headset - sell it to one of your students when you get hired by an airline.... once you get to an airline you won't need the over the ear headset - but an in-ear headset with noise cancelling and bluetooth will become essential - especially after you push off the gate and need to call maintenance. with bluetooth you can just talk to maintenance control over your headset thru bluetooth instead of putting in your earbud or wired headphones under your aviation headset. The majority of pilots won't wear headsets above FL180 and go "topless" - put ATC on the loudspeaker - but ive already lost hearing over 20 years of flying jets and can no longer hear ATC over the cockpit speaker even with the volume turned up to max so that pax sitting in the exit row in row 18 can hear ATC clearly - i've finally broken down and gotten an aviation headset with bluetooth - besides being able to call maintenance thru the aviation headset bluetooth to my phone, i can listen to "training material" lol over my headset... when i find the first officer annoying when all he wants to talk about is the latest political beef and conspiracy theories instead of where the good food and beer is during layovers. you're making six-figures so the $1000+ aviation headset is a drop in the bucket - especially for protecting your hearing. -no you can't write that off (maybe after 2025 when the TJCA2017 expires and you can deduct unreimbursed employee expenses again - maybe) it'll be years of going topless before you notice hearing loss and by then it'll be too late. one-more thing.... i know "you don't need the money" and a lot of your commenters are also " not doing it for the money" but it's been decades of "low" wages and devaluation of seniority - so no you're not doing this to get rich - but don't devalue all of the sacrifices that current pilots and employees have done over the last 6 decades trying improving the profession - pay / safety / etc when you say "you don't need the money". Read Flying the Line - volumes 1 and 2 when you get the chance. and when pilot and flight attendants and mechanics picket - it's not all about pay - it's quality of life - not being thrown under the bus by management or having our flying being given away to joint ventures, etc...

I'm on the same path but i've just turned 63. this was inspiring. 1 thing I was wondering about and hope you've investigated is insurance. recently i heard a flight school laid off their head instructor becuase of the insurance cost. that insturctor is mid 70s, has 40K hours, flew for American and is a great instructor - i know because i've flown with him. So now i'm worried this may be a lot of work for nothing if i can get forced out of the game due to rising insurance cost because of my age. My path was looking at bercoming either an instrument instructor or tail dragger instructor. also looking at the mapping flying or cargo flying.

No one has my favorite study method that I used. Super simple old fashioned way using flashcards except its digital in an srs (spaced repetition system). It lets you rate a card after you see it on how hard it was so you don't have to bother studying questions you already know the answer to but it will still bring it up sometime just to make sure you retain the info. The only downside is you have to build it yourself. I got a little help from asa prepware database of questions so just used a little computer magic to convert it into the decks I used to pass my Airframe & Powerplant tests. The other key was using no wrong answers or mock tests. If you can answer a question from memory the wrong options don't matter.

I remember trying the “I’m going to fly every day all day and knock it out” approach. I remember laying in bed after my second cross country of the day (about 7 hours in a plane) on my second straight week with no days off, I was half conscious and was departing runway 11. I did my call outs and I could feel myself lifting off the ground. It was at that point that I knew I had over did it and needed a day off lol. Not to mention you get the perk of being absolutely dead broke throughout this experience lol.
