Thank you Lee. I hope you and your family had a very happy Christmas. Good to know that the video sparked a happy memory for you! Officer and a gentleman is one of my favourite movies and I’ve been looking for an opportunity to reference it. Happy new year to you Lee.

Thank you for the information. I am 62 years old and 4 weeks out from left hip total replacement surgery, posterior style. My left hip joint became increasingly painful this past year; arthritis runs in my family. We tried pain injections but they would last only a week or 2. Finally the surgeon recommended replacement surgery and I agreed. I began 2022 riding my motorcycle but by early summer it became too painful to swing a leg over the bike and I felt increasingly less safe in my ability to handle the bike in the event of a sudden maneuver where I may have to put my left leg down quickly. Even simply coming to a stop or backing into a parking spot became unbearable. So I parked it until at some point after surgery I would be ready and feel safe enough to ride again. Now that I am on the mend that question comes up. When is it physically safe to do so? I have been riding for 46 years so I am a very experienced rider but I do ride a large Harley Road King which means weight is certainly a factor. On the plus side, the large motorcycle is a comfortable ride that probably would not jar the new joint too much. My concern is more of having to handle the weight of a bike at stop lights, mounting and dismounting, pushing or backing up a bike when needed, etc. And I appreciate your comments on potential complex damage to the new joint in the event of a crash. Certainly something to think about.

Thanks for your detailed comments and for sharing your experience. My advice is to wait until you are fully recovered mentally and physically. For most people that’s around 3-6 months after surgery. You are an experienced rider so it will be quite intuitive for you once you start riding again. Let us know how you get on.

I would like to reply to your inquiry. In May of this year I was putting my bike up on the center stand and the soft ground gave way and without warning my bike fell over on my left leg. yeoweeyeee. I am 71 so the impact fractured my left hip which required emergency surgery. On May 23rd I had surgery in the afternoon and I was released to go home the next morning. There after I walked with a walker and then a quad cane. At the 13 week mark I told myself I would ride my motorcycle again. Well, I wasn't quite ready. I did take a friend's scooter out for a spin to get the feel of it and one week later I was riding my bike. So, I would suggest whether and whenever you ride again is entirely up to you. As they say, it's all in your head. haha. good luck to you. By the way, this is now my 15th week post surgery and I am riding my bike every day.

@@simon77047 so sorry about your accident. I just visited with the surgeon this week which was 5 weeks post op. He gave me specific movements to avoid. But otherwise I am heeling really well. I have the green light to return to bicycling, hiking. Skiing, snowshoeing, and yes, motorcycle riding. He just said be cautious and listen to my body. I still will wait another month or so to ride. I don't want any unnecessary chances. But I did ride 2 of my bicycles this weekend. Felt great. Good luck as you continue to recover.

Hi.. would just like to ask one question I can't seem to find an answer for my concern. I am 64 year's young 😉 and will be having both hip joints replaced this year.. Question: Will / How I be able to mount (swing my leg over) my motorcycle saddle without risk of dislocation?.. If this action is risky how am I supposed to carrying on biking? Or will I be risk free of dislocation after 6 month's if all goes well with post op..? Sorry for longwinded question.. but can't find anything anywhere about this subject.. Thanks Mario.. 🙂

Thanks for your question. My advice is this: as long as your surgeon is happy with the stability of the hip, and there haven't been any complications after surgery, then the risk of dislocation shouldn't be any greater than normal. I advise my patients to wait until 3 months after surgery before returning to motorbiking. By then, the soft tissue envelope around the hip should be strong enough to resist dislocation. Hope this helps.

@@stocks7765 thanks for your question. I’m not a shoulder surgeon so if I were you, I would ask your surgeon for advice on this. I can’t see that it would be a problem unless you have a crash!

@@stocks7765 I know what you mean! I guess it’s all those years spent dealing with the consequences of crashes. I’ll ask one of my colleagues who is a shoulder surgeon what he thinks and will let you know.
