Having SIBO can also make us more susceptible to nutrient deficiency, especially Iron. Iron plays an important role in keeping our red blood cells healthy enough to transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Supplementation can be the answer. But can taking Iron or iron supplements be safe when you have gut problems such as IBS and SIBO?

Thank you Dr. Nicole, you are amazing! :) You are the only one out there who's truly looking at all angles of gut issues, unfortunately there are so many out there who act like they know it all but meanwhile aren't even understanding basic bodily processes.

I just recently started to take iron ( 2mo ). I was told that iron feeds bad bacteria so I wasn't so sure about my approach. You encouraged me to continue without worries. You are the best Nicole. Thank you for your hard work! Btw. Yes! to biofilm series

There is research on taking Lactoferrin with Iron to reduce the bad buggies (proteobacteria) from accessing it. I was told by the Hawrelak Clinic to take them together in the same mouthful. I'd also personally recommend taking them before meals because the stomach acid can eat up the lactoferrin.

I eat lots of red meat daily and liver weekly, however my ferritin was only 22 (Ref range 20-350). I also have SIBO, could it be that they are stealing so much iron that my levels are that low? Or could it be something else in conjunction? I wouldn’t have thought SIBO alone could prevent me from absorbing so much, I consume much more iron than the average person.

I have iron overload - hemachromatosis, and wondering if that might be contributing to why I have SIBO. I treat it with phlebotomy but I basically always have high iron. Something I don't hear much about and wondering what your take is. Hemachromatosis is actually much more common than people think. I'm pretty sure extreme stress is what caused my SIBO so everything you are saying about the vagus nerve makes sense to me just hoping I'm not doomed with my iron overload.

@gutmicrobiomequeen

Ahhhh this is such a great question Marin! Yes, it's actually somewhat common; I've diagnosed it before in a patient who had no idea why he was so inflamed and fatigued. The biofilm/microbe convo from this video doesn't pertain to you at all, actually! If anything, your body sucks up all the Iron before the poor critters can get any 😂 Woo! What matters for you is the inflammation bc of all that Iron in your blood! You'd benefit more highly from chelating strategies and anti-inflammatory support out the wazoo! You also may want to consider neuroprotective herbs like bacopa and lions mane so that the inflammation doesn't impact your motility as much. Best of luck!

Hi Nicole! What about the claim that iron supplements cause constipation by increasing methane production? Will it negatively effect methane sibo? I took iron recently but got badly bloated and constipated and I was wondering if that could be the reason and if so if its temporary or not!

Sorry for all of the comments, but this is a very interesting video, thank you! I had asked my doctor to recommend a multivitamin to take (in addition to vitamin/minerals he had me specifically taking). He specifically recommended a multivitamin without iron and copper. Now I understand his reasoning for trying to get me to avoid iron. Do you know of why practitioners treating SIBO may tell SIBO patients to avoid copper, too? Thanks!
@gutmicrobiomequeen
@gutmicrobiomequeen 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I never use or recommend with Iron! I'd much rather control that as an independent variable. If you tie your Iron to your multi, you'll be high and dry looking for a new multi when you discover you're no longer Iron deficient. I personally don't have people avoid Copper. Actually, I'd rather see Copper in the multi bc it will balance out the Zinc that's in there! (They compete with each other for absorption, so if you take a bunch of Zinc w/o Copper you can become deficient in Copper (and vica versa)).

I've heard iron supplements can cause constipation, which is definitely not a desired result when dealing with SIBO?
@gutmicrobiomequeen
@gutmicrobiomequeen 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is a very real thing that can happen with Iron supplements! I've found that food-based Iron is the least likely to cause constipation, followed by heme based Iron supplements (Proferrin) (this hardly ever causes constipation, from what I've seen!), followed by Iron bisglycinate (which causes constipation moderately frequently). By far the WORST for causing constipation is RX Iron pills. I calk them the "Home Depot Special Pills" bc I swear it's just Iron filings that are glued together 😂

Hi Dr. Nicole, I've also heard from elsewhere that a stool test could never diagnose SIBO, but I have not heard that about urine tests. Would you say the same for urine tests? I did a microbial organic acids test (uses a urine sample) that showed excessive levels of good and bad bacteria, and yeast. My functional doctor used this as evidence to confirm my SIBO (a GI doc said I probably had it even after a negative breath test, so I had not had any lab evidence of SIBO, prior). By the same logic as the stool test, I would think you cannot diagnose SIBO with a urine test? However, that it can tell us there is excessive bacteria/candida at least SOMEWHERE in the gut (we just do not know where)?
@gutmicrobiomequeen
@gutmicrobiomequeen 2 жыл бұрын
Yup and yup. Urine testing can't *really* confirm SIBO, but it can give you a loose idea of overgrowth or dysbiosis *somewhere* in the body. I wouldn't even say it's necessarily in the GIT- theoretically you could have a vaginal, urinary tract, or other organ infection and that would wind up showing on the OAT, too. Remember, urine is basically just filtered and excreted blood, so it's picking up metabolites from EVERYWHERE. That being said, if you and your providers have reason to strongly suspect SIBO, I'd still treat it as SIBO 😊

Are peanuts bad for Candida? I find it hard to get enough calories in on a Candida diet without unnatural sugars and nuts are easy but most are hard to digest except peanuts
@gutmicrobiomequeen
@gutmicrobiomequeen 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting question! The reason peanuts specifically end up on most "no" lists is because they tend to be moldy (cashews, too, unfortunately). This might make some people feel worse if they have an overgrowth of fungi... That being said, nourishing your body and getting enough calories and protein to HEAL should always take #1 priority. Period. So, go ahead and try the peanuts and see how you feel. Are there other foods that you can add in, as well? Fyi, I have a full-length podcast about Candida 😀 Enjoy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/sISokpWwnMSrm6c

Any oil of oregano will do, probably! I like the A.D.P. tablets by Biotics Research, though, and that was what I referred to here. I usually have people take 1 tablet 3 times per day. Occasionally I'll have folks do 2 tablets per dose for a few weeks if I feel it's needed.

Hello Dr. Nicole. My mother suffers from irritable colon, gastritis. The doctors here in Colombia only know how to order medications such as esomeprazole, pantoprazole, antacids, trimibutin, etc. Those are your treatments from the doctors here. But in the long term that has brought him more problems. Lately it remains swollen with pain. I have tried to advise her that these treatments do not bring her any benefit, but because of her anxiety to obtain improvement, she always resorts to these medications. I would like your advice on how to start helping her. In addition, she no longer has a gallbladder and years ago they applied radioactive iodine to her for her thyroid problem. And also osteoporosis problems. I think the doctors here are undermining my mother's health from years ago. For lack of knowledge I think she went through all that. How to do in that case, taking into account what he suffers from?😕 Sorry if it's misspelled. Use Google translate. 😅
