I know that some find that reverence is lacking in the liturgy. I have not had that experience in my church. My mass is NO facing the people and is very prayerful and can’t imagine what others are experiencing.

Guys, Can the chatter stop? This show, was a shining example of “dialogue”. One of the ways in which Vat 2 failed. Dialogue does not mean I’m ok, your ok. For something to be true, it must be always true in every circumstance. Objective truth. One of the other areas of Vat 2 failure, is not talking about Satan and sin. I love you guys.

I want the Traditional Tridentine Mass to be offered at each Parish at atleast one Mass on Sunday's so I can go back to the old ways...I don't like modern Mass because the choir show boats and it's not as reverant... I don't like it I only go to it because the modern Mass is the only one offered anywhere near me and as reverant I try to be during Mass it's hard to focus on my prayers before Mass because people talk in the Sanctuary before Mass!!!

The Novus Ordo needs reformation. Change it to be the same liturgy as the TLM but in the vernacular language. If it takes another ecumenical council to do that then I’m for it!

That reminds me of the Ordinariate form of the Roman Rite. It's in English but aspects of the liturgy like being ad orientem reminds me of the TLM.

@@thepunkrockchristian well the Church is more diverse than we think. The Latin Rite has the Ordinary form, TLM and the Ordinariate. And then I know there are many other Rites of the Latin Rite that are not used now. Then of course through the Eastern Catholic churches you have the Byzantine (Greek) Rite, Alexandrian (Coptic) Rite, Armenian Rite, East Syriac Rite, and West Syriac Rite. I myself am a SyroMalabar Catholic (East Syriac Rite). ✌

Traditional Catholic I saw it. I saw many vids from Church Militant too. I saw vids from Matt, and many others.. seems to me that some traditional brothers don’t want to see that not ALL ROMAN CATHOLICS have had liturgy in latin until Vatican II. Latin is not forbidden in liturgy, but to clame we should have latin liturgy, and go back to Trent, is ignorant towards those who never spoke latin in the Church (I’m talking about ROMAN Catholics). Fr. Pagano: I grew up during the upheaval of Vatican II and I can tell you that you are dead wrong. The documents are loaded with ambiguous statements that left too much choice with no insistence on norms; the norms were merely suggestions. Furthermore, the Novus Ordo gave us a rite that is almost the same as the Mass in the Book of Common Prayer and the Lutheran Mass, stripped of the many elements of ritual prayer that exemplified Catholic doctrine. Look at the studies done on Mass attendance across this country alone. By 1971, the Mass attendance numbers plummeted...and they have continued to do so. I must add that I am not merely a "parishioner." I have worked professionally in the church since 1972 and from my own experience, I have gone from playing 75 to 80 weddings are year to 1 in a good year. Yes, culture has had some affect on weddings, however the poor catechesis and the lack of catechesis from a Latin ritual were major contributing factors. One has only to consult the statistics regarding all of the other sacraments and one can see similar drop offs. This IS as a result of Vatican II - maybe not intended originally, but still a result. Defending the documents is useless now: the damage has been done.

@@mn22286 That is like saying that Nicea was a failure because it failed to bring the Arians back into the church, that is false reasoning. God gives you free will to chooss to accept the truth, it is not forced but to water down the Truth just makes things worse not better. It breeds confusion and that is the mark of the Devil who wants confusion. these guys like to grey the lines of truth as mercy. we are called to always give the opportunity for conversion and to never give up on souls, but not compromise the truth. This is evident in the early years with the persecutions of cristians who larsed and gave worship to pagan gods to relieve themselves of the persecution. The 2 camps at the time were to either ban the lapsed catholics back into the church or to accept them back through penance. the church sided with forgiveness and penance. BUT they never compromised the Truth, that giving worship or burning incense to pagan Gods is FALSE. the same thing can be said about Protestants False theology and denial of the sacramental system instituted by God and their false understanding of the authority of the church and the Bible. The guy with the beard said that Trent was Awesome so they do recognize that the council was worthy.

I'd really like to see the Sacraments of Initiation restored to their proper order because receiving Confirmation after the Eucharist really distorts it as the source and summit of our faith. Ideally, though I think the whole Church should adopt the Eastern Catholic practice of administrating the Sacraments of Initiation together in infancy.

Vatican 2 came 15-20 years too late . The counter cultural movements already had strong momentum and were deeply entrenched in most universities. I think that many of the priests that were implementing Vatican 2 were influenced at these universities that are heavy on Descarte , Kant , Marx , Freud etc. There was also 3 different camps that emerged from Vatican 2 that have been battling to this day .

I can definitely see where Fr. Pagano is coming from. Sure, they had all kinds of difficulties and heresies to combat in the past but the post-renaissance world has gone through a drastic change. The fact is, people’s thoughts and culture has changed more during the last 200-300 years than it EVER has before. The fact that church attendance is going down is not the fault of V2 as much as it is explained by the humanity’s overall change of mind towards a greater rebellion against God. That is why we see these evangelical megachurches growing and people from the CC are leaking to them. Christianity and even religion as a whole has seen a change where spirituality is now more than ever a matter of individual experience. We could say that religion has started to turn inside and it’s less and less externally defined. This is one of the greatest evils of our time.

Ilkka I also see where he is coming from - being afraid to be demoted or defrocked. Vatican 2 supporters frequently try to convince others that decline of Catholicism post was result of ‘greater cultural forces’ and it would happen anyway, actually Vatican 2 was great council that actually stopped the bleeding. That is joke. Decline in Church happened not after Vatican 2, but in 70s after introduction of Novus Ordo mass, reform of seminary training and reform of religious orders. In each of the cases there was direct cause and effect, flying to face of modernists who are part of the problem to this day.

Father, I appreciate your point. He's pointing out how truly convoluted this question about VC2. As humans, we want to pinpoint one reason for a problem. We can all agree that today's world is extraordinarily complex. This is due to not just a couple, but MANY heresies that are promoted and accepted. There is a LOT of confusion about a LOT of things, many of which are fundamental to our humanity (gender, family, marriage, etc.). After all, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been prophesying these times for quite awhile (Fatima, Akita, OL of Good Success in Quito, etc.).

I think the Latin Rite has gotten too big for its own good. There are 23 Eastern Churches in the Catholic Church but only 1 Western Church. I think it makes sense to not only give the TLM it’s own sui juris church, but also to give the Anglican Ordinariate its own, and maybe even the Mozarabic/Hispanic Rite and the Ambrosian Rite their own too.

As a child who grew up entirely post Vatican II, I can say it brought about what JPII said would be the "new springtime" of the Church. Was it messy? Heck yeah. But we're seeing the fruits in a Church that is smaller maybe, but vibrant and alive. Cause Jesus don't leave his Church alone ;)

It's about loving Christ and your fellow man, and for this purpose, submitting to Church authority. This means priest, this means council, this means pope! Many of Ryan’s complaints came about because the Baltimore Catechism was dropped with no replacement. Several generations were taught that God loves them. Period! I see the Catechists trying to get back to more. Teach the kids that the Host is truly Christ and their parents and grandparents correct them “It’s only a symbol.” Who do you think their going to believe. Oh yes, all those people who were going to Mass: their time to say the Rosary. I remember the nuns leading us in the Rosary during Mass. Not everyone knew Latin. I had a missal but love the fact I don’t have to read a translation to understand what’s being prayed.

You can’t look at Vatican II without understanding that the Pope who called for it didn’t think it was going to be this huge thing that it turned into, that he DIED shortly into it, the way the council changed in tone and scope after his death, the understanding about how the Bishop for the United States also died after the council and wasn’t able to enact the understanding of the council properly. We also need to pay very close attention to the people left living that we’re actually alive, and a participant of the council, such as Pope Benedict XVI. What’s happening with the regards to the Latin Mass being threatened it’s very messed up.

I would agree with this. What if at the very least lay organizations were to start catechism classes for converts and young adults as part of a one-day-a-week evening fellowship? I know I am only speaking as a convert so I don't know what happens in other churches, but I can see what I am missing in my small town, small parish. Just seems to me that could be something that we can do as parishioners and lay, people, that we might have the power to change. Sort of the if you can't change at the top, start at the bottom.

Also, my only issue with Trad mass is as a convert who is a blank Christian slate, I don't speak a lick of Latin beyond what you find in The Boondock Saints lol. If we can just so the same rights but in native languages, it would still allow for converts to feel welcomed and prevent them from getting lost. Additionally, and sorry if this is offensive, but would it be sacrilegious to bring the high altar upfront so the priest can face the parish and the altar simultaneously? Like having a pulpit off to the side and angled so the priest can see both? Might be beneficial for those hard of hearing who need to read lips as well as bring back a part of an old tradition. Again sorry lol completely new here so I am just trying to understand.

If the Church was so good before Vatican II then why were countries full of Catholics killing each other in 2 World Wars? The Church didn't derail because of Vatican II, Vatican II happened because the Church was already of the track. What happened in the 1940's and 1950's that caused the young people of those decades to leave the Church in their 20's and 30's? These are the questions we need to be asking ourselves. When I was in grade school in the 1980's the catechesis was terrible and I was more interested in Temple era Judaism than in my Catholic faith. I ended up educating myself on almost everything I know and practice today. We were never taught how important the Holy Spirit was in our lives other than the brief period before we were all confirmed. Parents are the ones who need to be teaching their children the faith, not the schools (here in Canada we have publicly funded Catholic Separate Schools). The Church shrinking isn't a bad thing. This separates the chaff from the wheat. When you look at parishes that celebrate the EF of the liturgy they are growing, with faithful and pious people. The pandemic has showed at least around here who the true believers are because we have to reserve spots for Sunday Mass, and weekday masses are at the max capacity of 25%. Pope Benedict XVI said that the Church was going to shrink even more than it already had, but what was going to be left would be a stronger more faith filled Church. I believe that. That being said, I believe that the Holy Spirit is calling all of us who are already in the Church to get ready for something, I don't what, but there seems to be events in motion that are going to climax into something incredible and possibly terrible. I love Catholic theology, disagree with many of their social views. Unfortunately many followers of Christ have been corrupted by sinful social views which disguises itself as Christ-like and correct.

I agree about the new Churches. They do not reflect the Catholic the Church. There should be no music during the Consecration of the Body and Blood of Christ. I also feel, there should be no singing after receiving Communion. Take the time to appreciate the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinty of our Lord and Savior.

One thing I found so attractive about the Catholic Church was how ritualistic the mass is, how “strict” the rules are, how structured the faith is, but lately it seems the church is bending to the will of the people rather than the people bending to the will of the church. I get that the church is trying to appeal to a wider range of people to increase its members, but it is losing the appeal that draws people to it in the first place. It should not be easy to be a Catholic, it should not be so generalized that we are like every other denomination. Catholicism has always been separate and apart from every other church and it feels like we are more and more blending in, being in a gray area, becoming too relaxed, becoming blah. It makes me sad. I guess I’m just old school, but I miss the church of 50 years ago.

Definitely the technology issues surrounding the dignity of human life is HUGE. And that honoring of all human life , Ryan, will tie in with that evangelization.in the face of digital isolation that you reference

We were raised, actually it was drilled into our heads that the Eucharist was Our Lord's body and blood. NO ONE except the priest could touch the Eucharist with his anointed fingers could touch the Host. The reverence for the Eucharist was strong and we all believed. We knelt at the Communion rail to receive the host on our tongues . The alter boys held the paton to catch any small crumb that may fall off of the Host or the Host itself. So much veneration . And then Vatican II suddenly said oh just erase everything you were ever taught for the past 100s of years and it's ok to hold the Host in your hands, pick it up with your fingers. No paton needed here folks. Don't bother kneeling. Then they want to know why no one believes in the true presence anymore. The Council took the reverance away.

With regard to the question of whether Vatican II increased lay participation in the Church: In the United States, at least, all the major lay Catholic organizations- Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Rosary Altar Society, Rosary Crusade, etc. were started well before the Second Vatican Council. I think that is something that is often overlooked, because it does seem that the laity then were involved in many more ways than many among the laity are now.

Post V2 seminary training is probably corrupted. I have a friend in the Diaconate program and he reports to me that heretical priest instructors tell him to not believe anything the Church taught him in catechism as a child....we have a more Modern understanding now, blah, blah, blah. It's horrifying.

On target, Father re: liturgical space! In the 70s and 80s there were so many churches built that were downright ugly architecture, and drab inside. Nothing about that was inviting to worship.

Counciliarism used to be a thing in the Church, and it ended pretty badly. In a way it sort of ended badly when it was picked back up again. Today’s ‘Synodalism’ is just a more convoluted, indirect way of doing concilarism.

I probably wouldn't be practicing Catholic today if the Mass wasn't in the venacular. Those who were open to learning and drawing closer, were assisted by the reforms of Vatican II. Sorry Ryan S. but I think the attendance etc in the West would have dropped anyway. And given the rising intellectual independence in the West, no way would people remain in a authoritarian Church (if they don't understand the basis of the rules/ teachings)....or grow in faith when they can't hear and meditate on the readings (liturgy of the word) in their own language, or be allowed to participate and belong. Right now, people who want to use their free will to become educated, accept the teachings, choose with their free will, and then participate fully....are doings it. I think the church is smaller, yes, but holier, and more real. Sadly, even in my own tradition, there were generations who just went through the motions, or sat in the pews, without really knowing, because that was culturally just what you did, or so you didn't go to hell. Too much superstition to rules, not enough connection to real formation and faith. I agree with your insight that all reformation from within, and evangeluzation without, must be centered around the true presence in the Eucharist, Just my insight, from a BOOMER.

The TLM is not the cure but it's a start. As Dr Taylor Marshall says: "At some point, you have to ask yourself if you want to deal with a hundred of female extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist or the veil police" 😂😂😂 I chose the veil police. I'm never going back. My little kids absolutely love it. Once you get used to it, it's very easy to follow. That's what Missals are for.

Actually, the first 7 Ecumenical councils are only accepted by the Eastern Orthodox (Greek) churches, the Catholic Church, and the group that split off from the Latin Rite Catholic Church now popularly known as the Protestant denominations. The Oriental Orthodox churches only accept the first 3 councils. And the Church of the East (modern day Assyrian Church of the East) only accepts the first two councils. The interesting thing is through the Eastern Catholic churches, all the Eastern Churches - whether Eastern Orthodox (Greek/Byzantine), Oriental Orthodox (Alexandrian/West Syriac/Armenian) or Church of the East (East Syrian)- have a counterpart version of those churches in the Catholic Church. Meaning the Catholic Church accepts all the Rites of the Eastern churches.

I love the idea of a Tridentine rite. I think every Catholic should at least have a working knowledge of the traditional rites, both West and East. Tridentine and Byzantine Liturgies should both be more readily available to the faithful.

One thing is for certain, Vatican II stirs up a LOT of controversy when Catholics get together and talk about it! That alone is something worth noting. If God wills it, He will send the Holy Spirit to touch the heart of the Church and a Council shall be called for His greater Glory!

No, Vatican 3! No more useless talking. You won’t settle anything Act instead. Kick out the bad bishops. Enforce the rules/ traditions. Then call a Council. There’s way too much evil and disparate souls to compromise.

Dan Morales That makes sense, Dan, and thx you for responding. I’d be ok with v3 IF they address the real problems. I don’t see meetings getting results. And I see the hierarchy making meaningless changes-like the slight wording changes in the Creed and now with the Our Father. We’ve got sexual molesters and thieves in the cardinals and Vatican and they try to avert our attention and/or waste time focusing on wording that didn’t need to change. In fact, the wording assured that most people won’t pray aloud at Mass. It’s like spending years trying in all kinds of new toe nail polishes when your leg is so infected it is barely functional. If v3 is surgery that would be well worth it.
