I think VR is finally ready to enter the mass consumer market headspace. So, this is just a brain dump of all my thoughts on VR related topics the last few years, and where I think the state of VR is currently and where it’s heading.

I think everyone is secretly just waiting for the Valve Deckard. If it's priced right, it could potentially be the saviour of PCVR. It will be give PCVR developers a bare minimum spec to optimise their games for. It will make PCVR a lot more user-friendly and less expensive. It will let you play any Steam OS compatible games in VR, via a virtual theater, or let you access its Linux based VR desktop mode. From a value perspective, it _could_ potentially offer a lot more than anything else on the market.

Well there is Praydogs Flat To VR Mod that will be released this year accept I heard New Years Eve that will put any Unreal Engine 4 and 5 into VR with motion controllers and just recently Room Scale, so there's that.

I think the problem with high-quality games on VR is the gaming industry itself. There is no room for risk or creativity when you can pump out the same game with microtransactions or some broken mess, which you hyped up so much that the lawsuits can't even scratch at your margins. In today's market noone trying to make a profit, which means every big game studio, in their right mind, would allow themselves to make a VR game. The only outlier is valve because they still have a drive to innovate and aren't deadlocked by investors and suits telling them to bring in another 3bn this quarter or else. I think VR hardware, even by today's standards, is awesome, I mean, just looking at what bigscreen has done is so cool and shows that the hardware people are keen on improving the user experience, but hardware can only take you so far. As I said, the software side of things is abysmal, and I honestly think that VR as a gaming platform is dead. Not because it's bad, but because it never got the chance to live in the first place.
