Poor guy, he keeps his head up a lot, I suspect he's more nervous inside and holding more tension than he is letting on, he never seems really relaxed, he just seems more like his behavior is controlled. He might benefit from some light lunging and then lots praise and some hand walks just to understand what is expected of him and that it won't be anything unreasonable. Doing stuff together will often help a horse connect a lot better. He's probably used to all kinds of random peeps feeding him and coming in and out of his life so he is probably slower to connect than some horses. He may also be used to more horses around him and a very difference kind of environment, then suddenly he is out in the boonies often by himself and he does not know what his job is now.

Ziggy's head is what was popular back when he was born, 18 or so years ago. Also, the type of Arabian he is (bloodlines) will dictate the head. There are Egyptian Arabians and Russian Arabians to name a couple of types. Usually the Egyptian Arabians are more dished and finer boned. I really don't like ANY Arabian but once in a while you'll find one who's sensible. Ziggy is one of those rare ones.

@@christinestephenson1742 You are correct about the different types from different line and countries. The super line bred Arabians I feel sorry for as they are so "hot" that they can't stand still to beat the band, but that is what the show rings like; a supercharged, prancing and snorting animal that looks like it should have wings and a horn on its head! I lived in AZ for a few years and went to different Arabian shows up in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. Huge difference between the different lines and of course the ones bred to wow the audiences at shows are not really for riding, at least not for anything less than a "jockey type" that can stick and not fly off these fire breathing show Arabs. Ziggy, is so cute and as other comments I agree that he is sensible and he is going to warm up to you once he realizes your his ONLY person. That is when a good thing that Arabs tend to have will bloom, as many of the Bedouin nomadic tribes were the ones that were jealously keeping the bloodlines of their animals pure, and the harsh conditions of living in the nomadic lifestyle in the deserts actually was a big factor in their horses becoming so interactive and pet like as they were completely dependent on the humans and were kept in the same living quarters (the unique Bedouin tents) so they received lots of human attention and those lines were prized for their loyalty and loving temperaments. How they were able to eat dates and camels milk on the many times there was nothing to graze is incredible. All that to say, I think Ziggy is special little guy and with your talent and "horse whisperer" actions, he is going to become your buddy for sure.

As he was watching you at the end he looked like, “see I can bend my neck without moving my feet.” It will be really educational to see you work with him to be more flexible. Can’t wait to see how he figures it out and how it changes how he moves. Also, natural horsemanship does have a lot of people using gimmicks that can get horses and people in trouble but, it beats the absolutely brutal way many horses were treated in the past and are still to this day. Hopefully, sites like yours can open peoples eyes to there is an easier way than domination and abuse to get a horse to do what a human wants.

The grey Arabian mare my sister had was very smart and sensitive, which I believe are traits of all Arabians if they are treated right. Your horse appears to be calm and easy, which I find to be unusual in a horse with his history! So many riding stables rent out horses to just anybody, many who cannot ride and "saw away" at the bits until the horses mouths become hard with scar tissue! I hope Ziggy doesn't have much of that, because he is so kind, but if he does, "it is what it is", and will have to be dealt with in your own gentle way.

He reminds me of a grey Arabian I owned for 17 years. I bought him when he was 10. A bit larger than Ziggy- 15.1 h He had an accident at the barn where he was being boarded. I worked with an equine chiropractor/sports medicine specialist for rehab. We worked on flexibility; lots of backing up, bending and stretching exercises. He was very food motivated, so he wasn't difficult to train. He would virtually bend his head to his tail if lured with a treat. Made training pretty easy. Turned out to be a wonderful trail horse. Glad Ziggy is doing so well. Looks like he landed in good hands. 👍

I thought Ziggy did really well in figuring out what you wanted of him. He gets a high score for remaining calm and responsive. My horses were trained by a natural horsemanship guy when I took them at 2 to be saddle broke but they had extensive ground work I had done on them since they were weanlings and already knew how to flex totally side to side, lounge, and were thoroughly desensitized to ropes swinging over their body from each side and wrapped around their legs. They also knew how to give their hindquarters and lower their heads.

He's a great little guy, love his disposition...and 18 isn't that terrible old! I think he's got a bunch of years yet, in him! And some of the best! If you keep him or pass him on, he's a perfect little mature guy, ready for the mountains!

I really like Ziggy, but he does remind me of several flea bitten Arabs I rescued and rehabbed. They really are sweet and try so hard. Both of mine went on to younger children who knew how to ride and could appreciate a knowledgeable older horse. You will enjoy this guy, I am sure.

Ziggy being 18. Outstanding! He's showing how much he likes his new home. I noticed towards the end of the vid he was turning his head to shoulder on his own. Love this guy.
