A boat builder is the one who does your steel work.( That's the boat).If its a shell and they fit it. out that's not a boat builder.They are fitters.

I agree with the fitters comment. Was interesting to watch, but when I saw concrete being run in and levelled, felt more aligned to an IKEA prefab build than a builder doing it from start to finish. Fitters have their place, for sure. But then I watched in sadness as you tried to re balance the boat (given concrete was run in). I re balanced my boat a few times since it's build. Things change, but concrete doesn't. Good luck with the new one

Hi guys, l passed the morning star twice today ( 7/9/24 ) at Burscough Wharf , I was on a cycle ride from Wigan to Formby and back, I also passed when you were moored at appley Bridge a couple or so weeks ago, I wish on either of these occasions I'd seen you around so I could of said Hi, and passed on my condolences for Dexter personally. I'm just in the early stages of having my own narrowboat designed and built, will be a bespoke shell design and looking at some "unusual" features, initially was thinking to renovate an old boat, but like you guys, I want the boat I want to live on, fully electric too, good luck with the venture, will be interesting to watch progress.

I don't think that redesigning the hull is a good idea. Buy a boat from a good builder. My boat is essentially the same design as this family has used for nigh on a hundred years. I would only buy a boat from a builder who knows more than I do and they won't change the basics, for good reason.

@@ladygardener100 The shell is being designed because I have specific kit that needs to be fitted in there, (not saying the basics will be changed) including a heat pump and underfloor and wall heating, a massive battery bank and generator, a water filtration system, 5kWP solar system, that hopefully will be sun tracked when i have designed the linear tracking system the list goes on, I have a very good boat designer, and a boat builder thats been in the game for 50 years who will be working together with me, so pretty confident that I will get exactly what I want, and be happy with it, and they have both said they will pull me up on things if necessary, and where is the fun in buying "off the shelf" anyway, nothing wrong with it, just not my thing having been designing and building properties for the last 40 years, I thrive on the challenges something new brings .. each to their own though i guess.

I find it sad that what should have been an incredible experience has been tainted by a poor build. Unfortunately it takes a lot of knowledge and experience to produce a quality narrowboat, it’s not just the decorative finishes that make a good boat it’s what lies beneath. I’m sure this time around you will get what you really want ❤

WOW!!!...Wasn't expecting that announcement...60' is too big for every canal system in England, that's why iam looking for something under 57', but definitely not electric, id much rather hear the noise of something engine wise...Guess you know what your doing guys, good luck with your new adventure 🙂

We knew there would be a trade off with size and accessibility but we didn’t realise how difficult canals that take 60’ would still be. The Wigan flight was a good example and there were some scary times trying to avoid all the water from the leaky gates whilst avoiding the cill. We definitely want to give electric another go. There were some amazing results from some of the boats at Elekrica. 🤞. Good luck with your future plans. Maybe we will see you out there ❤️

Well done guys. We've got an Electric narrow boat, aircon, timble drier, freezer, fridge, washer, all the things you want in modern life. We have 3kw of solar 48kW of batteries and 2 elec motors each w0 Kw. When we run out of sun which is rare, as we have time in life to top.up, we have a generator run by hvo, hydrolysed vegetable oil to top up. So fully eco friendly. Boat builders are a fabulous but generally they are adapting traditional boats, New companies who are building eco boats are thinking the about future design rather than adaptation of traditional boating. There is a place for all of us old and new, always best to go with a provider who specialises rather than adapts. Wishing you every success and happiness in your future home on the canals.

I'm always perplexed when you see so many of these boatbuilders offering 60ft boats as their standard offering. I get it, when you see the difference just 3ft can make to the inside layout it's amazing but the universally accepted max length for a boat that can go to all but a few obscure parts of the system is 57ft. I shall be in the market for a 57 footer soon as I'll be a continuous cruiser. I'd have an electric but until the CRT install charging points along the canal side(never happen), it would have to have a good size diesel generator to supplement the solar, particularly in UK winters if you are doing any significant motoring.

I guess it is always a trade off Dave and sometimes you accept that there are a few canals you won’t be able to do but gain that extra space. I think, what shocked us more, was the Wigan flight is more than capable of accommodating a 60’ boat but due to the massive leaky gates, we had some hairy moments. It is good that some marinas are now installing quick chargers for electric boats. I think this will be the start of the infrastructure. Unfortunately, a diesel generator will always be necessary.
