Great content, Let me start by saying Im a CDL Driver. I've been trucking since 1998 off and on. You are correct in saying if the truck is rated for under 26001 Lbs it doesn't require a CDL. But if you attach your equipment trailer to it, Now it does require a Class A CDL. You are required to have a DOT physical and obtain a Health Card. Your truck requires a DOT Number and Possibly depending on several factors: an MC# and an IFTA Permit if you travel anywhere outside of your state, Apportion License Plates, And you may be required to log your hours of service ( but there's several exceptions to this that depend on how far you travel for work and such). Your Vehicle will have to go through a DOT Inspection and EVERYTHING even remotely safely related and mechanical MUST be in working order or be repaired to pass inspection. Because you will become a Target to DOT officers eager to pull you over just to do a roadside inspection(Expect That) where they will go over your truck (with a fine comb as they say) and ticket you for everything they find,including over weight. Not just of your load in general but they may do this on a per axle weight if your load is uneven and one part of your truck is too heavily loaded you could be fined(Commercial Truck fines are quite expensive)And they could put you out of service, meaning you have to get everything fixed right then and there on the spot before you can move the vehicle, or have it towed to a repair shop of your choice. (Note:Roadside Services of any kind really, including tow service, is also very costly.) Once everything gets fixed you send your repair bill and description of the repairs to the court when you get ready to clear your fines to show everything has been fixed. You can hire a CDL lawyer to handle that for you. All this is quit pricy. It could raise your insurance rates and count against your license points. If you get too many you may find it difficult to stay insured. Consult with your Local Commercial DMV For further information. And possibly consult an attorney that handles CDL Cases to see what all you have to do to prepare. Either way, (you're a smart person), I'm sure you will figure out a plan that works best for you.. It's not all bad. It's not all Doom and Gloom. Once you get everything done and all paperwork and permits handled it's business as usual. Just saying this to make you aware of the up front Many hurdles in your path. And it will put a hurt on the wallet for a bit. So may I suggest this alternative. Fix your trailer the best possible way or trade up to continue using it for the regular duties and just look to rent a 5 yard dump for the bigger jobs which is one that doesn't require a CDL, and don't attach anything that may be considered a trailer to it. If something breaks on the truck where repairs are needed the rental company is responsible for this. You may be responsible for things like flat tire repairs and such. But for other stuff, let them worry about the repairs, permits, and licenses. And only get it if and when you need it. Good Luck My Friend, I'm rooting for your success. ..God Bless You, Your Family, and Your Business..

First I want to say you are killing it man, second I wanted to share what I am doing here in east central Indiana. I am 19 now btw, a year ago I payed cash for a tak tl140 skid, ran that 600 hours this year and then took a note out on a Deere 160clc. 3 months ago I realized how bad I needed a dump truck so I planned on getting an under cdl singe axle, after running the numbers I realized there is not a dime in running one of those trucks!!!!! So I decided to invent long term snd spent 5k and a lot of time a few months ago to get my class a cdl. Right after that I took another note out on a quad axle Mack cl713 and it has been the best decision I have made this year, has let to so many more jobs other than trucking, around here people pay around 6 per ton to truck stone 20 miles so the fact that I can haul 22 ton has made it actually profitable. If you haven’t done anything yet I would wait till winter spend the money on the cdl and buy a truck they you can actually put weight in safely

You'd do better finding a single axle dump truck ready to go. Instead of looking for a fabrication shop to piece one together. You would come out cheaper that way.

Personally brotha like you said you don’t always need a dump truck for every job but you always need a trailer to move equipment so why not just just sell both dump trailers and grab a heavier duty gooseneck dump trailer and get a gooseneck equipment trailer

I say stick with the dump trailers, seems to be the cheaper route unless you go CDL-A. I have a sure trac 14x7 with 14k and telescopic lift. Pretty good so far. Need to put it to work more though.

your best bet would to be get a class A which is super easy i got mine in 4 weeks showing up 2/3 days a week. Get a tandem dump truck. That older dump truck will be a pain in the butt and you cannot hook a trailer to it with out getting into cdl territory. Id say replace the kti pump for 400$ , sell the trailer and in the mean time work on getting that cdl so by the time it sells youll be able to get the dump truck.

Gooseneck dump trailer with telescopic lift. That way you still have a trailer to haul equipment around with and goosenecks ride way better then bumper pulls
@lessimpson64653 ай бұрын
If I’m correct you already have a cdl as your loaded dump trailer would exceed 10K. Assuming that’s the case, a single axle dump truck with 33k gvwr is the best and you can keep your f250 for smaller jobs with dump trailer. You could also use the dump trailer to haul equipment until you financially recover or find an affordable equipment trailer to replace the dump trailer. I’d look for something like a late 90’s early 2000’s international 4700 or 4900 with the mechanical 7.3 diesel. They are available and relatively cheap to buy and maintain. Most that are dumps will handle about ten tons and I forget what the GCWR rating is but it’s pretty high. I wouldn’t want some shop to fabricate a dump for me as most times they get it wrong in one way or another.

I think your generated revenue would be the tipping point. Customers pay for the materials. Around me, a full load is sub 150 for a full load. I would want to be moving 1/2 to 1 million tons a year with a driver to get away from paying delivery costs that I’m passing on to the customer. The more you drive a truck around, the less time you are spending moving that material on site. My delivery people are typically on time or early so the convenience factor is through the roof. If you go dump truck, I wouldn’t half step on it. Get something big, get your cdl, and reach out to other contractors for hauling.

Just remember, if you buy that truck, you cannot tow anything with it because it’s GVWR is 26,000 pounds. That’s the max without a CDL.

Dump truck when your business can support it.
@CurtisLandworksVT3 ай бұрын
I've struggled with this question myself and come to the conclusion that an under CDL dump truck does not make sense. I chose to hire tandem axle trucks for my larger trucking and I pay them cash, and I pay them well. I have relationships with 4 different guys with trucks and I can always get a truck when I need one. I also have a dump trailer that I use for smaller hauls. You cannot legally haul your equipment with that dump truck. I don't think you are going to want to mess with trying to get equipment in the bed. The ramps would be way too long and too heavy to handle. Get your dump trailer working, make a future plan to get a CDL and get a real truck when the time is right. Now isn't the time based on what I can see.
@hhunt25273 ай бұрын
I’m not sure how the math is going to work out on that if you don’t have a CDL. You wont be able to pull your skid on a trailer with that set up using the dump truck. Not sure if you thought about that. I would say get your Class A CDL if you plan on doing this long term. That’s the ultimate investment in yourself and business. Best of luck and God Bless!

But to me it makes zero sense because you’re going to have to find a way to load that machine up high off the ground and onto the dump body. Go get your CDL. But if you want to keep the way you’re going with dump trailer get a motorized dump trailer they’ll lift the dump trailer with heavy loads no problem. Electrical dump trailers aren’t as good as dump trailers with a motor on it.

Look a truck with a single axle can’t weigh more than 33,000 if it’s a class 6 a class 7 truck isn’t even allowed to hold even that legally. In Cali we’re not allowed to haul even our truck limits because of safety issues and it’s true! Don’t try to push the trucks limits overloading it can also make it easier for tipping too if you don’t balance the load I’m sure you understand that. Any single axle dump shouldn’t have more than 8.5 tons when driving long distances or 10 depending on far you go. Also air brakes! Hydraulic brakes aren’t good enough to brake that semi truck you need air brakes. And I don’t know if your carb compliant laws but any truck before 2000 have harder times passing smog if that can be an issue.
