When we had a couple of lean years ( very lean grocery budget was 200 dollars a month for a family of 4), we used to tell the littles that we were having beef as a treat when it actually was a rice casserole with beef bouillon added. When our daughter was 14 she ate at a friend's house where they served ground beef and when she got home she told us that their ground beef had chunks in it so she didn't eat it because she thought it had gone bad! We have laughed over this many times since. We now gratefully can afford our own chunky beef. Take care

I bought half a cow 🐮 when my 5 kids were all home before they flew the nest. I would highly recommend it got plenty of beef and it taste FRESH. No additives or junk injected in the meat. The meat was seasoned several months and the steaks were awesome and no fat in the hamburger. Economical!!! Thanks for sharing Tribe.🙏❤️👏🐮

We raise red Angus cattle in eastern Iowa. Definitions: Heifer: a female cow that hasn't had babies Cow: female cow that has had babies Bull: an intact male, usually not the case as used for breeding Steer: male that has had testicles removed. Culling: the term used for a cow (female that has had babies) that is finally used for butchering. (Usually why they are so big) Most beef cattle sold for butcher are steers unless to many females for the operation. My guess is that the last beef you bought was a culled cow, why it was 900+ lbs. My guess is the beef you bought this year is a steer born within the last year. If you have any questions I am happy to answer if there is any confusion! P.s. love watching your channel and love you family! Have watched you for years!

Good morning Solo&Sarah. I think that's such a great idea for you and your family. I just had 4 and when they were all at home, I would shop for things once a month. Its do much cheaper. My friends use to laugh at me going to 3 different places to get things. I would go to the meat market and get one of their meat packages for the month. And it would last us. Then to a bakery place for bread things, then a regular store for fruits and other things. It saved us so much. My kids have been out of the house a number of years, but it took me a long time to just buy smaller quantities. Thank you for sharing. I'm sure your channel has helped so many on different things. You all are a blessing.

This is so smart. Our family (2 adults, 2 children) purchased half a pig last fall. We have about 5 lbs of that meat left nearly 9 months later. We had planned to get beef but a great deal on pork came from a friend so we did that instead. It was truly a blessing during the shutdown as we were able to provide meat for our own household and for family/friends when the groceries were empty.
@kyleighhiles97334 жыл бұрын
This is definitely the way to go if you can afford the upfront cost. Great quality, and an awesome way to support our farmers. We are splitting a cow with my sister this fall and I’m so looking forward to stocking our chest freezer! We also bought a generator in the event that we would lose power for an extended period of time. It has happened and we thought it would be a good investment if we’re going to have that much meat at once.

The term we use is "Beefy' I live in Canterbury New Zealand and our beefy's are all grass fed. Nothing nicer than knowing where your food come from. I love being able to provide a whole meal for my family from the food we raise or grow, something very special and rewarding in this. X

How much would you say it costs to raise the two steers? And then how much to have the one you keep processed or do you butcher it yourselves? Such a great idea, I may have enough land to do this.
@elkeschoolmann50434 жыл бұрын
We do the same with our 3 pigs. Every year we sell two, keep the meat of one for ourself. Selling the other two pays for the one we keep (including butcher costs) and the new baby pigs.

We call it a beef in texas. Most often if you are getting a Male it is a steer that has been fed out. A steer is a "fixed" bull meaning it no longer has its boy parts! 😊 A bull would tend to have tough meat. My brother raises beef for processing to bless families like you! We buy from him for obvious reasons but man is it so good!!! Best way and healthiest way to feed your family, and you are helping out a local farmer instead of the big box! Love watching your family. We got half a cow for our family of 6 plus a daycare. The meat is such good quality! We rarely buy steaks in the store and when we do they are not as good quality because of price, this is a great way for us to save money on some of the more expensive cuts. Instead of so many steaks this year we got prime rib for Christmas, I'm so excited for that!
@kamidsjournee4 жыл бұрын
In Nebraska it’s a “beef”-half a beef, quarter of a beef or whole beef. A female is a heifer (never calved) and a male (not bull) is a steer (castrated). You really don’t want a bull as it would be tougher. A cow is a female that has had a calf. You would more than likely get more hamburger from a cow since, like a bull, the meet would be tougher. Cattle to butcher are typically about a year to 18 months old-they are “fat cattle” raised for food. When you buy from the producer, you are cutting out the middle man who makes the most money. The money you pay the producer (farmer) is what s/he would get at market. Thank you for sharing your purchase. It makes me so sad to pay so much for beef at the grocery store when I know we as producers get so much less than that, but right now with the pandemic, an appointment with the locker plant (processing plant) can be as long as a year.
@JillyGWiz4 жыл бұрын
When my daughter was young, my husband and I always bought a half beef and a pig every year for the freezer. Our local butcher wrapped ours in paper, but I liked yours sealed the way it is since it seals out the air so it doesn't get all freezer burned. We also had a small garden, but mainly grew enough potatoes for a 55 gallon drum to get us through the winter and spring.

I’m fortunate that my in-laws raise cattle so I have access when I need meat. However when we process ours we make it all into hamburger that lasts a couple of years! We only purchase steaks & others cuts when they’re on sale then vacuum seal then & freeze. For us the hamburger is the majority of what we cook with. But getting a cow is the best way to go price & taste wise!

My mom used to do a Swiss steak with round steak,V-8 juice and onions. I think she would flour the round steak first (after pounding the heck out of them with a meat tenderizer) and fry them and then let them simmer in V-8 and onions. She probably had some spices too. She'd serve it over mashed potatoes. This was the ONLY thing she could cook that was edible.

A cow is a cow is a cow. Period. In my world that is. I spent all my summers on my Grandparents farm in Webster South Dakota, the most precious of my childhood memories were grown there. No running water and only a outhouse or slop pot for toileting. The quality and taste of beef from buying your own cow is incomparable to store bought beef. Now I want my own half a cow. I live in another farming state which is Minnesota, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to obtain. Thanks for lighting my fire.

I can't believe that price! I am in WA state and there's no way we would be able to find beef that cheap lol. It averages 4.99/lb here, more in some places, plus 75 cents per lb for cut and wrap. I found a killer deal with a farm that was $4.10/lb, INCLUDING cut and wrap, so I jumped on that! We used to have family that raised meat cows for fun but they didn't do it for a few years so we had to seek out our own and it was rough. We have said things Iike a beef cow vs a dairy cow. Although I have had dairy cow meat too. One thing just to figure out price more because it surprised me the first time is the difference between hanging weight and the actual weight of the meat packages you bring home. It is just two of us now in our late 60’s, but we did have four children. Now we have 14 grand kids. We did my a quarter cow from the busy farmer. He delivered it! In a couple weeks we will be getting another freezer then a half a hog from the same farmer. We will be good through the winter here in Iowa.

Very good idea. My parents use to buy cows /steer when I was growing up and have them processed.But our hogs he raised and processed those himself with a friend. It does save money for sure.

We are thinking about buying a cow too! I grew up on a farm and we always had our own raised meat.

We do the exact same thing, only it last a bit longer with our family of 4! 😅 My in-laws have cattle so we buy from them, and we know exactly what they feed it, where it’s been, etc. We love it! You just can’t get that quality of meat anywhere else! Great video! 💗

we just did this. purchased 1/2 a beef. We are in N ID. We paid 2.10 a pound on the hoof, process/ cut & wrapped was .89 cents a pound, slaughter fee 75.00 and once all was said and done it was 5.85 a pound. The meat was grained for a couple of weeks and hung for 3 weeks. This meat is crazy good!

There are many farmers in the UK who do it (I'm part of a farming family on the England/Wales border), but it's a fairly informal arrangement. It's only really the rural farming communities who work like this, and butcher animals for the use of themselves and their local community. It's not really a thing that's offered far and wide! I'm sure if you asked a local farmer, they'd be able to point someone out for you though! But generally, it's not really how our national meat industry works. For the best farm to table meat readily available, you need to go to the local butchers in the smaller market towns. They may even be able to get you in touch with a farmer.

I grew up on farm raised beef here in Ohio. We would raise our own and then have it processed. A neutered, male cow is called a steer. A female cow is called a heifer. We always raised steers. And I agree, farmed raised beef always tasted better than store bought beef. The cost per pound was more economical, too! Love your videos!

All makes sense. I would do the same....if i had lots of mouths to feed and ate meat 😂😂

It’s so nice to see someone who isn’t a meat eater still be positive about someone’s choices of what they eat 🙌🏻
@Cupcake4me4 жыл бұрын
TheWidge85 Aw thank you. . Oh no, whatever you eat is your choice and vise versa. I would never berate someone for their food choices. I still cook meat for my family sometimes.

I appreciate how you highlighted the ground beef issue. When you buy ground beef from the store you are likely eating an older animal the is not finished in a feedlot. Your ground beef comes form a prime animal....that’s why it’s so delicious!!

When you do this. Do the package the bones for you. I like to make soups using the bones for a yummy broth.?

We call it “buying a cow” but our meat most exclusively comes from our steers.

Soooo worth it! We’ve been buying 1/4-1/2 a cow for the last 5 years (family of 5). We ran out in April (great timing) and then found out the family had sold their farm. Looking at $40 (Canadian) for a roast we started eating more meatless. But thank the Lord we found an organic farm and the freezer is full again. Such good meat.

Do you think it's lower cost because your in Nebraska? I've been looking into it for me in NJ and it's not like when I lived in Iowa!
@sarahkleckner94394 жыл бұрын
Inge Lawyer I’m sure that has a lot to do with it! Just an FYI, my grandparents would bring us a cow to Nebraska once a year from Washington St. They would pack it with dry ice and it traveled well. So maybe a trip to the Midwest could be in your future?
@raynaemerson57874 жыл бұрын
We buy a half cow here in Ohio about every year and a half (you can also get it in quarters here) and it is way cheaper than the grocery store by about half. It does take a little investment upfront though with the freezer and we half to pay cash. 🙂 This year we also did half a pig and it was way worth it just for the bacon price difference.

My part of Oregon is between $4-6 per pound. Jealous of the Nebraska prices!

I priced a whole cow processed here in Texas and it’s about $8 a pound. Thinking about buying a cow then having it butchered after a year or so. I just can’t let my kids name it or it will never be dinner 😂
@shelly83874 жыл бұрын
In Arkansas we just call it beef when we're processing it. You only need to worry about distinguishing the difference when they're standing in your pasture, breeding or selling. I wouldn't worry about the terminology. It doesn't make a hill of beans. It's food!

We are planning on doing that once we get another freezer. We live in Wyoming and there are cattle ranches all around us, within a few minutes drive. We’re raising 23 meat chickens right now and they’ll be ready in September. Once we get them all processed and stored, I think we’re gonna start talking to ranchers about beef.
