If a person is interested in one, they should definitely consider buying used. A Silver Sky effectively drops a third or more in “value” the second it leaves the showroom floor. Reverb is rife with used SSs in “excellent” condition for $1600 to $1800, from the usual new retail price of about $2750.
@GarrettMaple20 сағат бұрын
Or just buy the SE version for a fraction of the price. I’ve done a little work on mine and it’s now every bit as good as the US version (in my first hand experience). I realise that not everyone can do that, but any decent tech can do it for them and still save a fortune over the US made SS.

@GarrettMapleI did a run through with a few Strat types I have , a Korean Lite Ash then a Japanese 62 reissue but when I got to the SS SE it was the easiest to play and played it longer than the other two . Trem is screwed down as it was out of the box and haven’t had to get it set up at all . Scared to try a core model in case it’s way better but any reviews I’ve read -and I agree -the SE is a great value option but some of the hardware on the core is a real upgrade . I do have a Deluxe HSS Strat with noiseless pickups but it’s a beauty and the humbucker is like stepping on an overdrive which is a great option when a lot of bridge pickups can be annoyingly spiky .

As a lefty, my experience with PRS has been limited to the CE24 Series(playing in the shop) but felt they were always too sterile sounding. Playability was always great, but just not right for me tone wise. But recently, they finally produced a Silver Sky SE (still no American lefty Silver Sky yet). To sum up. This $800 dollar Silver Sky made in Indonesia caused me to sell both my Fender Customer Shop Strats that I’d had for a few years. Just incredible playing, tone filled guitars. Can’t wait to buy an American Silver Sky if PRS ever produces one.

As soon as Sweetwater went live with it, I immediately pre-ordered a Storm Grey lefty lol Honestly, the first few minutes were "weird" - I wasn't expecting the neck to feel the way that it does. The chunkiness reminded me of my Gibson LP, but after diving in some more, I was like, "oh ok, there it is. we're good now" haha PRS across the board have guitars that are very inviting. They just play and go where ever you want.

I finally had the opportunity to try a Lefty silver sky here last month, (i readily admit that i have been critical of PRS for their very limited lefty options - and that hasn’t really changed) but the fit, finish and playability and tones were probably better than anticipated and i have to give serious bonus points for the fact that the pots actually had a useable taper and did not just behave like an on/off switch below about 8-9 (ie like most pots that are wired for lefty - Fender i’m looking at you here ! ) ultimately i found the neck profile just too chunky for my taste, but other than that it really did check all the other boxes. I too would love to see a USA model - but that wouldn’t solve the neck profile (sadly)

I have a Anniversary Custom 24.... and yes, sounded a bit 'sterile' as you say. I swapped the floating knife-edge bridge for a more vintage style Strat trem, with the baseplate rocking on body, bigger screws. Transformed the tone. The guitar came alive.... more acoustically resonant with a bigger fatter tonal response. More 'body' to the eq mix and less 'sterile'.

Prs guitars are legitimately the benchmark for quality, people will whine "oh it has no soul" to make up for their own inability to inject any "soul" into their playing. Paul said it best himself, guitars are reductive instruments and the goal is to get the most back out of what you started with and that's what you get from the average prs guitar you pick up and it's so rare for them to not be very good instruments that when one actually is bad it's a news story. There's no "special sauce" because it doesn't exist, people whom claim it does are just blabbing to make themselves feel better.

Last year I took my American Deluxe and to trade it for the silver sky that finally showed up at guitar center. As I tested it out in the store and ( I actually brought in my super reverb Deluxe to play through), I did not like the feel of that neck. And at 63 years old, I don't want to have to learn to play a guitar for that much money. The salesman hoping not to lose the sale, say what have I tried the SE silver sky? I told him no and so I tried it. And I liked it much better. The end of the story is I walked out with a 2408 PRS.

I think the core Silver Sky is one of the very best modern takes on the vintage Strat sound and feel (I have two, and also two pre-CBS Strats to compare to). My one gripe, be it a very small one, is that I think the sound is tuned just slightly too warm, especially when turning down the guitar volume. I know this is to Mayer´s liking but to me it is just a little on the warm side.

I usually don't read the comments but for some reason I was intrigued today. Fun stuff the debate about PRS. I am an average intermediate guitarist and fortunate enough to own many electrics, and here's my take. I like the PRS, the birds, the quality (most of the time). I also like my Eastman LP, my Yamaha Revstars are excellent guitars for their price, and I even like my cheap MIM strat. I set them up myself and they all play pretty good. Specifically, I own the first PRS SS, and bought an SE and returned it. It was good, just not as good as the American one. I have DGT SE, love it. I have the Custom 24, nice, but hard to keep the G in tune. I just bought a McCarty S2 thinline, love it. I tried the SE NF3 and sent it back. Spoiled by higher end PRS's I suppose. My 1980 telecaster is still a great guitar, as well as my 1980's American made Washburn PRS copy! They are all really good guitars. Even my Sire S7 is a really nice guitar. I want to thin out my collection, but I really don't have a bad one in the bunch. And my only Gibson is a Gibson ES-335, also really nice. Shit what to do????

PRS make very nice guitars, no question, however their biggest problem is that Fender and Gibson have the music history that simply is not there (yet) with PRS. I had two PRS SEs but as soon as I could afford more expensive guitars it was no brainer but to go for an American Strat, Telecaster, Gibson Les Paul and SG, none of them custom shop - the average price being around £2k each. Non of the core PRS's appealed, they were not 'sexy' in anyway to me. So I sold the SE's but I did keep the PRS floating stands to hang my Gibsons and Fenders on :) Once all of us Boomers are gone then perhaps PRS will have their day :)

I owned a horizon red and I loved it. It was truly the sound I'd always wanted. The perfect strat.My friends, even non guitarist friends, said that I had never sounded better. But I was kind of living a lie. The 7.25" radius was really hard for me to play-but it actually improved my playing a bit. I only faced up to this fact when I got a SS SE and I realised I was never going to play that perfect strat again. The pickups were better and it was just a better guitar, but the SE radius made me realise I needed something else. I sold the core. And since then, 2 years later, I recently got a professional to file the fret ends down, and he also rounded the fingerboard a bit. Not as much as a core but still noticeable. And even more recently, I put a SSL-1 in the neck position. It still doesn't sound like the core, but that pickup change makes it sound amazingly good. It really made a difference. I will be getting one for the bridge pickup as well, because I only use positions 1 and 5. The core is super awesome if people can dig the 7.25

Guitar prices are ridiculous in general these days. The PRS SE line is one of my favorites in store just because of their quality. I almost purchased one, but decided the used CE24 was worth the extra money to me. At the time I was debating between a PRS or a Fender Tele, and the Fender quality to price ratio is just bad. I cant speak on behalf of the Silver Sky, but i have a SE Custom 24 and the build quality is fantastic. It feels incredible to play and i havent had a single problem with the instrument itself besides the electronics. My only complaint is the electronics. Sounds of the pickups are subjective and i personally didnt like how they sounded, but my real complaint was in the quality of the pots and switch. The push pull tone pot stopped working after a couple of months and i never dropped it, or was rough with it at all, and the pots spun way too easily. U looked at the pot and it would turn. Lol. After replacing all the electronics it's a really solid guitar. Im still trying to find my ideal pickups for it, but it's an incredible deal and phenomenal instrument. I personally love how consistent their QC is. You know what ur getting when u buy one.

A friend came by yesterday with his brand new Fender CS Strat. Really nice guitar. Heavy relic, which looks amazing. But, it feels like a new guitar anyway. We were jamming for couple of hours, comparing my PRS SS with his guitar. Conclusion, his Strat sounded "better". SS has more clarity and certain "hi-fi" sound quality. More balanced, brighter and clearer. But that Strat has some mud, some dirt in lower mids that sounded just right. Also Strat pickup were noticably hotter which added to that "dirty" feel. To be fair, I adjusted the amp to suit the Strat and then only switched between Strat and SS without any further adjustments. Yet, sound wise, Strat had that "something" which gave it certain vintage character. SS sounded more clinical and balanced overall. Both sounded "expensive". Now, playabilty, feel and tuning stabilty were clearly on PRS side. Strat's medium C roasted maple neck with 9.5 radius maple fretboard was fine, but nothing spectacular. Yes, heavy relic looked very nice but it didn't feel like heavily played guitar.We both agreed that PRS neck was something else. It just feels right from the first touch. Fret job on Strat wasn't as good as on PRS. Those frets could use some polishing (maybe it is from sitting in the shop for too long). And at the end, SS was noticably lighter than Strat. I had impression that it was more resonant when unplugged, but the Strat had old strings from the shop. All in all, SS stood very well against the guitar almost double its price. Yes, Strat has some extra charcter but SS plays and feels better. If I played a bit with amp controls, I could probably get it to sound even closer to that Strat. And that was the piece carefully selected amongst 5-6 other CS Strats in the shop. I bought my SS second hand from the ads. :) Would I give 5K eur for a CS Strat when I could have an PRS SS for 2.2K (second hand)? Well, if money grew on the three, maybe. And I say maybe because PRS just felt nicer to play and I am not sure I would trade playability for some marginal sound difference.

I think it’s all subconscious. PRS doesn’t make any relic versions of their guitars, they are all perfect when they leave the factory. So a lot of owners try to keep them that way. As a result, you rarely see one that is beat up like you do with Gibson’s and Fenders. But I have one that is beat to hell, and it looks and sounds amazing. I think if more people had beat up PRS’s, or Paul would start making relic versions, that perception would change.

Public Service Announcement: Noiseless pickups aren’t noiseless, they’re humless. Having no hum is of course a great thing, but if the guitar isn’t massively and expertly shielded, it won’t mean too much in an environment with a lot of electrical interference. And you might also want to make sure, for example, that your lighting isn’t powered by the same cables that are powering your computer and speakers

I like my Korean-built PRS SE Custom 24 well enough. The zebrawood veneer is lovely, and the construction quality/playability are first rate. I think the Noiseless pickups sound pretty great, I used to play in a church with bad electrical and rf interference so it solved a problem for me. Feels like a "do everything" Strat. I had to have some work done on the frets which was a bummer, but now it plays like butter and hangs with my far more expensive guitars. Long story, sorry I think the MIM Deluxe Strat is more worth the money than an American Ultra or Ultra II if you want to try Noiseless pickups, far lower cost

Spec wise they don’t have super stable neck wood, stainless steel frets, particularly stand out pickups. Ofc course they look nice but most of what I find about PRS is the quality control and feel of even their cheapest instruments. They may not have the highest specs at the price but they’re easy to play and feel like a professional instrument. However I think Strandberg essential series might be the best bang for the buck around the 1k mark right now 👀

I blame Paul particularly for raising the prices of Fenders, Gibsons, and the like. The snobbery attached to the early PRS's made it clear to everybody that only the best could afford "the best", even though whilst being pretty, were they really any better than a nice Strat that you could buy for $1100 at the time? The PRS was indeed "the dentist"s" guitar. But it didn't take long for the big boys to realize that their guitars could only compete with that mentality if they were similarly priced, and so we have arrived. All good guitars are now $2500 and up, mostly up. At Namm you saw builders unashamedly asking between 10 to 20 thousand for their custom builds. I'm quite sure that Custom shop Les Pauls will soon be $20,000. Thanks for bringing true snobbery to the guitar world Paul. Have some more champagne.

I’ve still yet to play a prs where it wows me. I played a core that felt ok and sounded good. I played a Zach meyers with tons of fret issues. I played a Fredrick akesson that was the nicest of the 3 in my mind. It did have upgraded 5708 pickups. And while I liked it. I didn’t like it more than a Vintage v100 leap Paul style guitar. Which retails for the same or much less for used.

I had a CE24, which I eventually sold. It never did anything interesting or surprising sonically. Felt great in the hands though. The Santana 2021, however, feels and sounds amazing to me. No idea about the Silver Sky, never played one, but I DO hate the plastic tuners to look at 😆

Owned a Tele Ultra and a Strat with noiseless pickups. While the practicality side is undeniable, I never gelled with either and both got sold, replaced with a Silver Sky and a Fender Tele with Shaw Hot 50s. Both suit what I need far, far better. BTW - are the Fender Shaw Hot 50s a sleeper great pickup? Almost zero reviews or promotion anywhere on them and I got my set direct from Fender on sale for

Check out Ibanez Prestige. Those MIJ guitars are my trusted axes. Stay in tune with perfect intonation and playability even after 1 year without playing. They are my brightest purchasing decision and I will always buy Prestige series in the future if I need. But I doubt it, because they were built to last. My son dropped my RGD2127Z twice from the desk, they are still perfect 😂

PRS is for sure high production quality. Total respect for that, but for +15 years I have tried to fall in love with PRS. Have played sooo many different models. I can afford them and a part of me wants one, but not once have I played a PRS and felt I wanted to take it home. Not sure why, but some how they are all lacking the special “mojo” and feel (not related to relic). So too nice makes a lot of sense for me. I feel a piece of high quality guitar/wood wrapped in plastic. Somehow frustrating…

I have been amused by people who constantly make all kinds of silly excuses for poor quality and high prices of Gibson. They then attack PRS for being to nice... or having no soul. That is complete nonsense. Some people simply have their own silly fantasy about branding, and they are not likely to get over it. That is okay... if everybody were completely logical we would be paying $1500 for an SE. Today we can go to reverb and find hundreds of guitars by PRS that are in that 400-600 range that you already know the build is correct, and the guitar is likely to play very well. That is a good thing. More musicians getting their hands on great instruments.

I got to handle a friends dgt se, and my 1st comment was how NICE the neck felt in my left hand. he said plays like Butta!!! I imagine it must, but would require me to buy another guitar.

I have a couple and they are fantastic instruments no doubt ... Being someone who has always swam in the big two’s pool and that’s where I’m most comfortable I just don’t love them. I think the silver sky may be the one that could actually win my heart and soul. Think at 2 k will pull the trigger..

I remember commenting on one of your Sire guitar videos and mentioned the silver sky in comparison & you said that you just returned the one you had for poor quality control. I found that odd because most are really nice, aside from the fret ends on the se models sometimes. I guess that you came full circle...... only a fool never changes his mind

Like any PRS, the Silver Sky does a thing, and if that's the thing you like you'll like it. Personally, I own exactly one PRS; it does its PRS thing but I find it virtually unplayable (it's an SE, so take that fwiw). When I need it I have it, otherwise it stays in the case, but ymmv. Btw, if you like the Silver Sky for the beautiful glassy tone, compare the EJ Strat, which covers that territory nicely, thank you very much. Plus it does have the vintage, chunky neck. Those seem to be pretty available second hand.

My PRS guitars are some of my most played, they are never in their cases, a tell tale sign they get played a lot. I have a Cus 24 Standard and a Cus 24 S2. Only thing i was not crazy about was the stock pups so i replaced them in both guitars.

My number one is a PRS CE its easily the best guitar ive ever played and you can feel it immediately when you pick it up its just built different/better. I dont understand the people who say theyre too perfect...loke they just NEED their guitars to be a little shitty 😂

Playing since over 40 years and reduced my guitar count to 48 over the last two years - did not keep a single Fender or Gibson. All my favorite guitars are PRS, Knaggs, or Eastman, most others are curiosity stuff. There is a bit of a male insanity thing going on there, I think. Something has to need fixing and tinkering. Only a car that poisons the planet is a real car and safety belts are for sissies. I always laugh a lot when KZbinrs play their Gibsons and you can hear the loss of intonation within seconds after performing their nut sauce routine and every other song and dance in the book. My oldest PRS is a Custom 22 Artist from 2002 - I have never done anything else than changing strings. Works. Stays in tune. Sounds awesome. If looking for noiseless pickups I suggest you have a look at the Mojotone '58 Quiet Coil set. I am searching for usable quiet single-coils since two decades and these are the best ones I have found by quite some margin. Next would be the DiMarzio Area 61. For me, the Suhr and Fender offering all sounded lifeless.

I love the prs thing but really wish they more options for 25.5" scale single coil guitars. The SS se's ive tried havent spoken to me and were getting ready to have our first kid so I justify spending 1.5K on a core guitar.
@tonygreensmith72036 сағат бұрын
For someone as talented as yourself I would have thought quiet single coils would be a big plus. A Suhr Classic S is about £1000 more expensive than the Silver Sky and includes the Suhr silent coils system. You have consistently praised Suhr guitars. Is this not a better option for you than a PRS?

Wish they had stainless steel (or hard nickel) frets and noiseless pickups (which you touched on briefly... Paul Reed should be smart enough to make one that sounds like the real thing).

I really want to try the PRS Fiore…I wonder if it is as nice as it looks.
@steved109916 сағат бұрын
Never played one. BUT Jack Griffiths (peach guitars and FANTASTIC player) did videos for all the guitars that came into their store. So, he literally played all guitars under then sun from cheap to custom shop/private stock. He is now on tour and plays a Fiore, I asked him online if this was his number one and he said yes. This says a LOT about the Fiore.

PRS created their own "too nice" aesthetic when they started marketing their Top 10s. Adding bling is not about how it plays and everyone knows it, it then becomes a fetish. They have made the LOOK of the guitar into a huge marketing windfall, even successfully bringing that concept to the SE lineup. Just play yer damn guitar....

I got nothing against the brand, I support value propositions and finding dependable reliable products wherever you can. That's not the issue I see with PRS, it's, like a lot of brands, who or what you associate with it. Some people will associate PRS with quality. And some will associate the brand with the artists that play them. As someone who is utterly befuddled by the worship of John Mayer I can't say his association with PRS moves me to buy one. But their quality control standards would for their Indonesian made series. Not sure politeness has anything to do with it. Many people play Fenders and Gibsons regardless of their quality because their heroes played them. Just seems like PRS doesn't have that same back catalogue of legendary artists to pull from. That's it. There's no magic in any of these devices. Mayer is entitled to his opinion but at the end of the day he's John Mayer. He's not Hendrix. He's not King. He's not SRV. He's not Page, or Gilmour, or Beck. That's really what PRS is competing against. Is it valid? Don't know. Not sure it matters.
