To be a complete marshal artist I think you need to be proficient at least one striking art (Boxing, Muay Thai, Karate, etc.) and one grappling art (Bjj, Judo, Wrestling, etc.) If you only wanna train one art then something like mma (which isn't really a singular art but a conglomeration of different arts) or sambo that incorporates both grappling and striking is your best bet. Everthing said comes with one major caviot though. Whatever martial art/arts you pick needs to be "battle tested." You need to do hard sparring regularly to get used to what the pressure and intensity of what an actual fight will be like.

Atemiwaza (the techniques of hitting the vital points) is a very important part of old style Kodokan Judo, Aikido, Jujitsu, Aikijitsu and Taijutsu. You need to complement your grappling techniques with hitting and kicking techniques like Muay Thai (Thai Boxing). Fighting spirit and the determination to survive is absolutely necessary.

Speaking from my Karate stand point: it all depends on how you train. "To be able to fight you don't need Karate. All you need is the proper mindset and a technique that works." -Hirokazu Kanazawa. And I would like to add: it is not the worst thing to do, when you look beyond the limits of your own style and do some crosstraining. About including striking into grappling: in Karate strikes are used to build up a throw. You shock the opponent by striking/kicking so he is unable to move for the briefest moment of time and that is when you go in for the throw.

Any martial art that has some pressure testing, sparring, randori, rolling, is far more valuable than nothing at all. And I believe will make you more competent and successful in a physical altercation. The average guy that has a job, family, kids, bills to pay, basically a real life, can’t afford the luxury to hop around investing time he doesn’t have in multiple a marital arts. Find one you like with pressure testing, stick with it, you will have a base to work from to be successful. If you’re a martial arts bum with no real life then hey, be an mma fighter, why not?

Hi Chadi. I trained for some time in Kombato, a brazilian form of self-defense created by Paulo Albuquerque, highly based on Sina Tirsia Wali school of Kali (Philippine Martial Arts). One of the theories by Paulo was that a self-defense form need to be always based on the general scenario that you're inserted in. Here in Rio de Janeiro the most commons atacks in street fights happens by knife and firearms, in terms of hand-to-hand the most common one's we see is BJJ, Muay Thai one some variation of that combination. So Kombato was heavily based in counter bjj and muay thai atacks on the h2h aspect and in knife and firearms disarm in the weapons aspect. Although assault's do happen with knives the thugs are not skilled in it. Since Kali is specialized in knife fighting Paulo tried a lot of scenarios, in one of them common thugs try to attack you with knives, in this one the training usually compensate. The other scenario was a Kali practitioner attacking you white a knife, no one was able to "survive" the test. If a knife skilled combatant attack you with a knife the only way to stop them is running faster or a firearm, outside this two options you are dead. I'm telling you this cause i think this point is really valid. I think every self-defense art is created to specific conditions. In USA Kombato might not work that well, cause a lot of people do high school wrestling and know at least the basic of it. Kombato didn't prepare you for counter "high school wrestling" like throws and takedowns, but the bjj ones. The thing in considering Judo and BJJ alone for self-defense, in my opinion, fall into this. What is the scenario that you are inserted in? Are you being constantly attacked by Kali Masters? Train sprints a lot and get a gun. Are you being constantly attacked by alone thugs? BJJ probably will work pretty well. Are you being constantly attacked by groups of thugs? BJJ will get you killed. It's always depends on what happens in the scenario that you are in.

Hey Chadi Ive trained in full contact karate for over 16- 17 years. Noticed i needed grappling/throws in my tool box so I trained in judo for 2yrs. Then realized its going to take a while for me to put this all together so I was referred to Aiki Jujutsu Daito ryu dojo styled Aiki Elmore ryu (For 4+yrs now) and bro. I must say one of the best things i could have done expanding martial arts/self defense training and my if your grappling for self defense you need consistent training against strikes. And really pressure test. Conclusion judo alone with understanding how to parry and close the distance or fight your way into your grappling you may have a very hard time with a striker especially if he/she knows how to land.

"It depends in what you're made of and your character" Actually sums it up... Without that, no matter what your skill & strength or "toughness", it will be useless if you don't have something inside you that enables you to overcome the fear that freezes many... Or the fight of the dog, or the cat or lizard inside oneself... Like you, I was bullied as a child because I was fat... That in hindsight was the best thing that happened to me because it gave me the courage from inside to learn to do the martial arts I've done, judo, boxing, karate, Wing chun style of Gung fu, finally settling with the martial art of Tomiki aikido which has a competitive element in its randori shiai, which can be practised into older age and also teaches many of the fundamental aspects of many martial arts... It's a shame it is not more well known... Tomiki was a scholar and was a student of Jigoro Kano. Also one of the first and senior disciples of Morihei Ueshiba... He was an innovator and recognised that there was an element missing in Ueshiba's aikido, that of putting it under pressure to test for individual effectiveness, just as in Judo... Many say it looks like bad judo, but thats because of ignorance on their part... It's like everything... If you've never tried it, how can you possibly know?

Judo and BJJ are never good without striking. Karate used go be complete back then before Japan fucked it up. Of course now we have complete Karate styles like Kudo, Ashihara and Enshin Karate. But Okinawan Karate still has it’s grappling and such as well as the striking. But when training in Judo or BJJ today, you need more than that.

interesting very few martial arts are good for self defense. Self defense are a such broader subject than just knowing how to throw someone or how to punch . Self defense training should answer the question what to before, during and after an assault. The training should also include stuff like situational awareness. I train Scandinavian Defendo and it is basic mma with self defense. It teaches the student basic punches, kicking, wrestling, grappling and defense against different weapons. We have few technique to be able to act during stress. I also trained in bjj and think that it is a great art and would work fine or good enough against an attacker. But if I have to choose one art i just for self defense. I would choose Defendo.

@arashghanbari59074 жыл бұрын
It's great that you have a holistic view of self defense and you include the fact that your character and personality affects your ability a lot. I myself didn't grow up in the best circumstances and therefore have become very submissive as an adult even in every day life and I'm too agreeable. One of my main reasons for wanting to start Judo and BJJ is to develop my character and to be able to stand up for myself more. I did some Karate in my teens but it didnt really help. I think Grappling will help me hugely though because the first thing you learn is to hold your ground and not back down and sure you have throws and submissions to finish the fight too. But I think training isn't just for self defense. For someone like me it will help me hugely in every day life such as work, school, etc walking into a room and knowing no one can talk down to me or insult me again and that I have the power to take care of them.

No, these are not enough. I trained starting in highschool in traditional Jujitsu informally (but I had no clue back then). My dad hired a friend of his who has trained in Kodokan for self defense training. We trained in our garage. My original sensei owned a gasoline station and he would occasionally fight to thwart off thieves. He fought a lot and he showed us wounds from knife cuts. This was like 30 years ago. Sensei said that the worst were the druggies who dont feel any pain. What he taught us kids were shiho nage. But his was a different kind. We do this against punches or knife attacks. We basically catch the arm in preparation for shiho nage BUT we break the elbow first using the shoulder as leverage. Then do we only complete shiho nage. He also said that the fight needs to be finished in an instant. Judo and BJJ dont have joint breaks unless arm bar. I have 2nd degree belt in aikido and studying Judo.

@rustyshackleford7352 жыл бұрын
If it's combat sambo the strikes are already there, but in most sport sambo. I'd say that any top tier martial art can be good enough alone on the streets against a low technique thug, but due to all the variables the best art you can train in for survival on the streets is track and field, or maybe parkour. Being able to escape a fight is the best situation, if that's not an option then martial arts are your back up, I've won fights with just wrestling before I did BJJ, or Muay Thai.
