Problem with starting your own imprint complete with brick and mortar stores is the scaling required. Adidas and Nike already have the infrastructure in place from decades of building up and from starting before there was such fierce competition in the space. To enter the market as a new (and profitable) upstart without a big company behind you would necessarily drive up Yeezy shoes to the same price point as shoe brands like Balenciaga, Off-White (when not collaborating with Nike), or Versace but without the luxury materials. And yes, that may well be Ye's plan, to create a luxury brand, however the drawbacks are too big. Boost and adiPrene are proprietary to Adidas. Imagine a Yeezy 350 without Boost, or a Yeezy 500 without adiPrene (if Kanye can even take those designs with him from Adidas). It would be an entire brand reset trying to reach a newer (richer) audience that are immediately turned off by anything with the word Gap on it. Virgil Abloh pulled it off because he took what was "cheap" and turned it into an ironic commentary about lux fashion. His margins became huge and scaled up quickly as a result. Kanye does not strike me as the type to be making an artistic statement about street fashion and using cheap materials, slapping a message on it, and then selling it for big margins. He actually appears to want his Yeezy imprint to become the next LV or Gucci. Unfortunately he's put himself into a corner. Big fashion labels are very limited with how much product they release. Yeezys, in contrast, are everywhere. Sure they're more expensive than your average sneakers, but they are still within the range of anyone being able to buy a pair of recent Yeezys by saving up for a month or two. You can't save up enough to buy a pair of Gucci sneakers. You either have it or your don't. With so many Yeezys on the retail and resale market, the general luxury brand buyer wouldn't be interested in rocking Yeezy. It's too "common." He'll fix his relationship with Adidas or he'll shoot himself in the foot. And with Kanye recently, you may as well flip a coin to figure out what he'll do.

Exactly what I was thinking, amazing comment.
@AliHussain-fz7pd2 жыл бұрын
With the departure of Rorsted it might change but you're right, what the corps have is economies of scale & overseas manufacturing plants that are well oiled, plus the proprietary tech & the R&D $ that goes into that. I think that he might be able to partner with a Chinese company but again, the trouble is that it won't have the same reach with retail locations. Tough to do things that have become synonymous with the brand like a global roll out on launch days. Adidas standalone stores that are viable in part because of a diversified product offering that makes them profitable. Standalone Yeezy stores will struggle because the appeal of staple Yeezy products just isn't there in my opinion. I'm actually surprised with Adidas because they are essentially cheapening the Yeezy brand by selling Yeezy knock-offs. I'm sure that they feel that his insistence on limited stock is denting profit potential. Honestly if I was Nike, I'd make a swoop for Kanye but they've got to be careful too because Yeezy might cannabilse other athlete affiliated lines. But you can imagine members of the Adidas board irate that too much money was being left on the table because Kanye refuses to go mass market, they don't care about brand integrity and the executive board is perpetually concerned with growth, quarter on quarter, year on year, to buoy the share price. They've taken his staff, they've taken his designs, they want him to go mass market and essentially use the formula of collaboration with limited edition releases of their own with regularity across the calendar. They think they've found the secret sauce & the pressure must be on to monetise it but they need to be really careful not to make a martyr out of this guy. It's the PR migraine that will keep on giving.
@frankygonzalez54752 жыл бұрын
@@AliHussain-fz7pd I'd also bet that the board and their advisors are seeing the controversies that Ye is accumulating in his personal life as potential risks that are beginning to outweigh whatever benefits they're getting from allowing Kanye so much free reign. Regarding the cheapening of the brand, I'd try to look at it from the perspective of the board. Are their restocks cheapening the Yeezy brand or is Kanye doing that by himself with his tumultuous personal life? It seems to me, by all appearances, that the heads of Adidas have decided to cash out as much as possible with these restocks and creating alternatives, product dilution be damned, because they're predicting the value of Yeezys are going to naturally fall by themselves as Mr. West crashes through controversy after controversy. There's only so much people will tolerate, even from a superstar. I'd even argue that Kanye's insistence on earth tone shoes are beginning to starting to fall out of step with consumer taste. It reminds me of Henry Ford's Model T. He was asked about making other colors of his car to appeal to more consumers. Ford reportedly replied that if people wanted other Ford car colors, they could paint the cars themselves. His competitors made other cars, and Ford lost a big chunk of the automotive market share. I think you're right about the martyrdom, which is why Adidas' relative silence seems very calculated and feeds into the narrative of, "Aw, it's just Ye being Ye." I'm less worried about Adidas than Kanye personally. I think someone he trusts needs to tell him to think about what he's doing with more deliberation.
@AliHussain-fz7pd2 жыл бұрын
@@frankygonzalez5475 Interesting comment, but seeing as I'm paying you the compliment I better clarify that I mean both. I disagree with Kanye cheapening the brand. I don't think it rubs off on Adidas. I'm not discounting the fact that there may well be board members that feel that way but I think Kanye has cheapened his own brand quite a bit already but he'll struggle to cheapen the Yeezy brand. I like some of his music. I like some of his designs. I own some slides. But I hate his ex wife, the bipolar thing hasnt been a great look. The Presidential bid, crying on stage, Taylor Swift etc. I can't remember when it wasn't a shit show. The data also matters, are sales falling, what do the brand health indicators say? What is social media saying? I'd be more worried about an Adidas boycott than a Yeezy boycott. I get that you don't like him. I also get that ordinarily it would be a death warrant for a corporation to be associated with him & his antics, particularly in today's world. LVMH, Nike & others have all steered clear for the very same reasons. But Adidas' previously addressed the Kanye conundrum really well and basically said "look, he's going to say some wild shit, he doesn't represent our values, we have a creative partnership, he's one creative partner." He's an exception to the rule and it may be because he's never had a clean image to spoil. There's no scandal with Kanye, nothing is going to get exposed or uncovered like it did with Tiger Woods. You don't seem worried for Adidas, and from my previous comment it's clear to see that I understand the levity of their clout in this equation but while you may not worry about the company, worry for its executive board. Rorsted's departure isn't a coincidence in my opinion, I'm speculating of course I don't know anyone on their board. Today, Kanye he puts out a message in social media to his fans not to attack the coo. Again not coincidental in my view. Someone's probably been on the phone. Whether they like it or not, Kanye can singlehandedly dent their share price to the tune of billions, that too pre-recession. And if that escalates to the entertainment industry siding with Kanye, and then there's a hint of racism..things can get really bad and fast, providing an opportunity for a budding executive to swoon in like a knight, milk the narrative and the money. Yes, a little far-fetched but possible in the unpredictable world we live in. I understand the God complex that corporations can have, the irony is, they've met someone that's got one of his own!

well, turns out that Adidas have reported their first operating loss in 30 years, and Ye is speculated to have made between $20-$50M on the back of a superbowl ad from his website, with all the merch saying F adidas in Russian. Not a neat break up, costly too not because of the loss but because they should have made a couple of hundred million in profit, and the repercussions for Adidas in a key market are going to be felt over the long term. He went nuts too with the anti semitism, and he has the number 1 album on billboard, as an independent. Shit is mind blowing.

I can't see him leaving Adidas, he has it made. He'd be hard pressed to find another brand that would give him as much freedom and that has the production means to satisfy his desires for Yeezys. Kanye will either leave and secure his own manufacturers to take over sneaker production completely or stick with Adidas. He'll never go to Nike. If he thinks Adidas is bad on "control" he'd have even less there and his ego won't let him do that. Honestly everything he complains about is pretty normal in the business world. A lot of his designers and key players in Yeezy aren't loyal to Yeezy or Kanye, but to themselves. It's natural for good people to get headhunted or to leave and pursue better positions, which Adidas is offering them. As for the whole "copycat" thing. Let's be real. Maybe they're 'inspired', but the new Adilletes are pretty different and dope. And foam shoes or slides have never been a new thing. They just got a surge in popularity because athleisure is huge rn. As a sneakerhead, I love Yeezy, but not Kanye.
@ws48352 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with you here. Also I think it should be noted that adidas fronted the investment for the tech and the materials that go into the adidas Yeezy line. Kanye is the creative one who comes up with the approval of the final product but adidas is the one who provides him the means to get it out there. I say all this because I can’t imagine that adidas would limit that tech and material just to Yeezy. Adilette 22 is basically that alternative option that adidas is providing to non Yeezy customers. A Cheaper product that should be more accessible in the long run.

I think Kanye is creating a cover up story. The yzy x gap x baleciaga trash bag clothes was a failure & Kanye is creating a big story with adidas over some bs. Kanye could need professional help with mental stability. Regardless I appreciate the yzy sneakers, I agree with everyone should have access to getting a pair.
