At about 1:34 I said "indie publishers are dying out." That was kind of one of those lines I wrote without putting enough thought behind it. Implying that the indie publishing community is dying is a bit much, it's more accurate to say they're retracting or shrinking, or even struggling. A lot can (and should) be said about the state of indie publishing but that wasn't the aim of this video, so I didn't want to spend too long talking about. I bring it up again later in the video where I speak with a little more nuance, so please stick around until then. Thank you.

Before watching the video, I'll just throw in my two cents here These days, the Kickstarter landscape is a lot different, in that if you go into it without something like a pre-established following, you're basically setting yourself up to fail. There's just so many people using the site these days that anything less would get drowned out in the noise. It's sad

i think it’s perfectly understandable given that there’s way less appetite for something that doesn’t look like a proven investment. the stereotypical kickstarter past the heyday is some random nobodies pitching hyperrealistic survival MMO with deep roleplay, 90% of which either blew the budget or ran away with money, basically screwing the backers over.

I was really sad that Rad Venture campain failed, it was one of my main inspirations to make my own 3D platformers, and seeing their development made me see that is possible to make a game, I really hope they could get a great comeback, they deserve it

Yeah, I hope they're able to come back from this. They have a good sized audience, so I think there's a good chance.

I once got burnt on a project where the people behind it embezzled a over a million, constantly misrepresented everything and then hid behind a manufactured bankruptcy process. When Kickstarter allowed stuff like that to happen (on multiple campaigns) and gave no fucks whatsoever, that's when that site died in my eyes.

I don't often back games on Kickstarter; they usually are for hardware I don't have. The only game I backed that was successful was for adding voice acting to an already released visual novel.

Thanks for making this video and sharing the google sheets! They are so insightful! I ran my Kickstarter campaign in 2020 successfully thanks to a youtube video got attention. It made me able to continue working on my game Probably I will run another campaign for my next game, and it would be far more difficult for me. Still, it might make sense considering the current shortage of funding in the indie game development scene

Yeah, I think that's an important point I wish I emphasized a little more. Kickstarter is going to be so much more important in 2025 as funding across the industry dries up.

One niche that seems to do pretty well, and that is quite Kickstarter-dependant, is physical releases for retro systems (NES, Game Boy, Sega Mega Drive, Dreamcast etc).
@TripleIris2 ай бұрын
That's a good point, I noticed quite a few of those as well. Probably a better alternative to something like LRG.

I personally think Kickstarter isn't worth it. If you want to have a successful kickstarter campaign, you need to market the campaign. Kickstarter won't do that for you. If you're already getting this attention for your game, just direct the traffic to your own website or PayPal account. That way you don't have to worry about the kickstarter fees. I know this because I have ran a few failed kickstarters. Though maybe I should try a farming/social sim next.

I've heard about Kickstarter, but never backed a game since last year with Zero Space. I only did know about because some Star Craft KZbinrs did Videos about it, without them I would never did go on Kickstarter and look there for the game. This is maybe the biggest problem of the site and for new games. Only if they get attention, talked about or do good marketing someone like me would go on their and back a new game. Also Zero Space is not on your list. They have over 6000 backers and where successful last year. And the Game Prim did release in October.

11:05 Almost. Eiyū has a long 'u' (like English 'oo') sound and means hero/heroine. Like... _'ey, you!_ I've personally backed two videogame campaigns this year, with a third nearing its completion (and in need of just a smidge more backing). I usually back at least a few every year, but would certainly back more if my economy was in better shape. I've found a surprising number of developers in Spain being behind interesting projects, but they've been from various places in the Americas, Europe and east Asia. The games I've participated in funding thankfully almost have a perfect release record, and I still have hope for the big exception since the studio behind it finally managed to release another (simpler) game to great success and improved financial security. I'm also backing a collectible figurine project with Amphibia characters, but... that seems to have gotten stuck at around 38% with two weeks left to go. I assume the fandom's splintered due to Elonazi Muskrat ruining Xitter.

For video games? Maybe. I've backed a lot of ttrpg stuff on kickstarter, and frankly, I don't typically trust video game projects. I'm a backer of Zerospace, and I'm waiting to see how it does, but I'm not very optimistic with how the competition is doing.

They use it more for electronics and games than comics. Though video games cost more than comics, they often generate more return on investment. So yes, they still do, but on a smaller scale.
