This is a very interesting channel. Found you after your rally vids, and didn't expect to get commentary on living in Korea, but it's enlightening.

I was stationed at Yongsan in Seoul in the 70's and even though your country was run by a dictator at the time, I still found the people to be gentle, wonderful and kind people. I really enjoyed my years there and hopefully can return now, 50 years later!!! God bless.

I was stationed at Osan AB in 1983-84 and found the same thing, especially from older Koreans. They were thankful for the US being there.

I personally think that Hell Joseon was an idea from one period in Korea’s history about 10 years ago, but things have shifted drastically. As you said, Saturday is no longer a work day. I am free to use my vacation days when I want. Movements like MBTI have dramatically expanded people’s understanding of what “normal” behavior is. To add, Korean expenses day-to-day are far lower than what I experienced in the USA, making actual financial survival far simpler. Especially healthcare. Right now, my experience in Korea is quite comfortable. I aim to make it as good as possible.

As a Korean myself, here are the pros and cons of South Korea I would like to list. Pros: - Very safe - Overall clean - Convenient - Food is great - Strong, traditional family values (despite the country having the world's lowest birth rates) - Not as woke as the West Cons: - Weak laws on sexual crimes - Judges and those in power being lenient towards even the most heinous of criminals (look up Cho Doo-Soon) - Rights of criminals over those of their victims

Your last point is the opposite of what it should be. Korea SHOULD be more like the west, if anything

Great vid. I lived in Korea for 14 years and have nothing but good to say about your country and people. I was treated well and fairly. Of course, no place is perfect but it's nice not to have to worry about being the victim of violent crime and going bankrupt because of some medical issue.

....I have been to Seoul and stayed there for a few weeks and loved every second of it!! of course there are struggles there too, but while I was there I could truly sense the responsibility, unity and respect each Korean person has as part of their society. ....and I felt so safe travelling alone there!!🙏🏻

Last year I read *If I Had Your Face*, by Frances Cha, and I wouldn’t say it contained any truly shocking disclosures about Korean culture…but somewhere between Heaven and Hell we do seem to have a problem. Btw, I’m writing this from NYC, so I am aware that the dystopia has several epicenters…Is the word “dystopia” self-sabotaging? Eh, perhaps all labelling is counter-productive. To me, it’s more important to ask myself if I’m living a life that radically agitates the status quo. Peace be with you.

Good to see something positive about Korea. So many western youtubers amplifying negative aspects of the young in Korea and Japan. Every generation, when young, had challenges since the beginning of time. With the amount of negative youtube videos, it looks like some country or three letter agency is trying to destabilize the two most successful Asian countries.

As I was watching you review of the political rallies I thought, "This guy sounds Korean." So I looked at your channel name and then to your page, and indeed you are! That brought me to this video. I have a real affinity for k-drama and K-pop, and had the opportunity to tour your country a few years ago, so I've heard the term Hell Joseon several times. I was curious to see your thoughts on the subject, since you're a young man in the age group that tends to lament South Korea's current economic and unemployment conditions. Your thoughts are quite refreshing. I can tell you are intelligent and understand that a person doesn't have to be a victim of circumstance. South Korea is still a reletively young republic with a capitalist economy. Of course things will still be tough, especially as ancient traditions and cultures seem to clash with modern norms. Progression is sometimes slow, but I hope the young people of Korea hang in there and don't give up. To me you are a shining example of your generation. Congratulations.

JS situation is due to cops not doing anything despite being called to multiple criminal incidents. That's when Korean citizens stepped in. Had Korean cops arrested him like in Japan and Israel, none of that would've happened. In other words, JS would've faced similar mob in Japan and Israel if their cops were as incompetent as Korean cops.

Thank you for your thoughts. I think that every country has its unique set of pros and cons. Do you get paid holiday/annual leave in South Korea?
@Leigh-z8i
@Leigh-z8i 24 күн бұрын
Yes, it depends on how long you have worked, but people who have worked over a year gets 15 paid leaves a year and is added an extra day for each year they worked (capped at 25 days). However, it’s not common for Koreans to use all the leave at one time, like Europeans or Australians do, and some opt to be paid for unused leaves instead. We also have paid maternity leave for 3 months, and a year of childcare leave which is partially paid.

I also wasn't sure WHICH Korea you mean by the title, but of course, it was immediately obvious when I started listening. As, unfortunately, it's probably a given that there IS a Korea where life has seemingly been quite hellish to most citizens. 🙁 I know it's a whole other topic, but I started to be curious about If, and how, this angle - comparisons to NK - is considered in such conversations (about the quality of life of South Koreans among themselves). I wouldn't be surprised if it's usually not, because it's most probably not the place and life you'd like to be compared to... sorry if it's a sensitive topic (have no idea). Thanks for the interesting point of view.

As a Korean , I assume south Korean how do you feel about DJT's statement of admiration in the way North Koreans treated Kim Jong Un ? I ask because I find it concerning to have a possible future political leader espouse admiration of behavior clearly the product of long term authorititarian indoctrination. Made more concerning by his admissions of admiration of other similar dictators.

South Korea is not a living hell. You are rewarded for you efforts, anybody that actually believes competing is not a good think just doesn't understand nature. There is no place in nature where there isn't competition, plants or animals it doesn't matter they're all competing for their place and if they can't compete they go extinct. It's a harsh truth but it is the truth. If you want to know what a living hell is, just tale a look across South Korea's border, that's a living hell. People are starving to death because some clown named Marx wrote a few books with stolen information and some other clowns read it and believed his stolen ideas would work in human society. What they forgot was the basic laws of nature and human existence, which is the need to compete or the instinct to compete.

I have been to South Korea at least 17 times including my time as a language student there at SNU. Contrary to the Hell Joseon term, I still remember my times there with lots of nostalgia and sweet memories. My best friend and hyeong still lives there in Cheonan and tells me to come over and visit all the time. It's not a hellish place even if it has its problems, but it's not as if these problems cannot be solved with a little more civil-mindedness and social awareness.
