Steve that was an excellent review. I always want to know what benefits the newer (and usually more expensive) model has over the last one. Personally having owned Asus, Alienware and MSI laptops, I would pay the higher cost for the MSI. However any Laptop over $3k is a bit too much to pay unless your minted.

Looking at the older generation XPS 17, which is somewhere around $1,000 cheaper than the newer generation. $2,200 vs. $3,200 for the 12th gen i7 3060 vs. 13th gen i7 4060. Hard to justify the additional expense. Both have near identical components otherwise.

If you want to play 1080p/2K I think you should stay with your old laptop but if you want to play 4K 60 fps, maxed out graphics on most games go for the 4090 laptops.

Yes sir. If you can't afford the 4080 premium, a full powered 3080ti is the way to go. The gimped 4050-4070 ain't worth that 5% increase performance even with frame gen.

@@graelstream2353 Thats Scar 17 SE is a great machine, powerful and quiet. I have just tested the Scar 17 with the 7945HX and 4080, it is also quiet and fast but a bit expensive for the build quality..

@Grael stream yeah, the m18 is a disappointment. My review will be up soon. There are two problems I think. The first is the vapor chamber is under the motherboard and is starved of air coming in from underneath. The second I think has to do with the thermal pads on the VRMS etc, I get stuttering on Hogwarts Legacy, just like I did on the m16 but the GE78HX and Asus Scar 17 are fine. I did a video years ago where someone showed replacing the pads fixed his stutters. But to get access to all this you need to take the motherboard out. The 1% lows are lower than my GE77HX.

I unfortunately (?) got my GE77HX when it was current gen, though even at its original price it was much cheaper than the GE78HX is (about $2499 last year).

Hey stephen, I think that the max p 140w rtx 3070 aorus 15p at $1150 on best buy is MUCH better value. Yeah sure it has ddr4 ram and ''only'' a i7 12700h, but you gotta admit, at $1150, its killer value. And of course, who can forget the gigabyte aero 16, with a 4k OLED and 100w 3070ti for just $1300. So these new so called high end laptops have a even worse display than the gigabyte 16 oled. Other than refresh rate, its worse in every single way. The asus rog strix amd advantage is $1200 right now on best buy. And packs a 12gb rx6800m, which would likely be good for 3d animation work, which does require a lot of vram. Also, you know, its 2.5x cheaper than that rtx 4080 MSI ge78hx. So, unless you want to justify a 2.5x price hike for maybe 40% faster CPU perf and maybe like 40-50% GPU perf uplift, then go for the rtx 4080 MSI laptop. Even the cheapest on sale rtx 4080 laptops are around the $2300 to $2500 mark. And remember, this is the rtx 4070 in reality. This an excellent point you've picked up stephen, and I do hope you cover the launch prices of these laptops as well just to show people how much nvidia is ripping them off. For example, the rtx 3060 launch price was $1000 on laptops, same as the rtx 4050. RTX 3070's launch price was $1400. You already know the rtx 4070's launch price and the rtx 4080's launch price. Mind you, ampere launched in pandemic + crypto + Shortages. So whats nvidia's excuse for much higher hikes in price now? People really do forget ampere's launch prices on laptops were reasonable.

This is me NOT using sales or anything of the sort. RTX 3060 launched at $1000. RTX 3070 launched at $1400. This ain't the case for rtx 4000. I don't know what to tell you Stephen. I was looking to buy a rtx 4000 series laptop but the price/performance on offer is simply horrendous. I thought the rtx 4060 laptops might launch close to $1000 in my region like rtx 3060 laptops did, but nope. RTX 4050 laptops will cost that much AFTER sales. Otherwise its $1300 for them. And last gen? I don't want last gen performance, I didn't wait 5, almost 6 years to buy last gen performance for the same price. And I am sure europe has similar prices too. Very expensive crap rtx 4000 is.

This laptop is a huge disappointment. After owning it for a mere 4 days I am returning it. Despite the very nice colours and brightness, there is huge backlight bleed as so many have reported/shown, blacks are nearly blue, and one corner glows much more than the others. No G-sync was a huge mistake, as this laptop is unable to provide consistent frame-pacing without it(even with dGpu activated). The laptop also gets so hot on the deck you can burn your skin.(bad choice to use metal as I now have learned) The speakers are pretty nice but sadly I also have the crackling sound in BF but it can happen way before 87 degrees, mine was doing it on silent mode at 75 degrees, another KZbinr shows it doing it on Fortnite too! The keyboard looks kinda dated and cheap in real life, and the laptop and power supply look more dated in person than they do online. The RGB bar isn't as bright as it looks on camera either and the keyboard RGB is not as vibrant so the colours can't match up and look a pretty washed out on the keyboard compared to the bar. I spent probably 24 hours of the 4 days just trying to get my games to look smooth. The framerates are great, but the frame pacing is awful, v-sync does little to help, none of the Nvidia/MSI centre/bios settings helped, updates, ddu, fresh driver, undervolting, turning off E-cores, playing with power settings both in the bios and in MSI/Nvidia/Windows. Nothing would give me smooth frame-pacing. At a complete loss with this laptop, the firmware/drivers are terrible, MSI centre runs extremely slow, and I'm not waiting around for the fix when they couldn't even quality-control that backlight bleed on a 3k + laptop. Sorry for wall of text, hope somebody finds it useful!

Thanks for your in-depth analysis Owen. I think all these 13th gen 32 thread laptops have issues with poor 1% lows, my GT77HX is definitely better and it only has a 3070Ti. Hidevolution told me the speakers on the GE78HX were blown, but I was also getting the crackling with headphones. Seemed like an electrical interference issue to me.

I tried to explain last year when Apple put prices up on the MB Air M2 that this was due to 30% inflation in the tech sector, but the Windows mob claimed Apple was ripping everyone off. Now, they get to see the reality of an inflationary economy with OEMs no longer able to subsidise the background inflation. As I said then, buy the previous model if you cannot justify the latest price and Apple did well in keeping the older Air on sale. I expect this year to have further inflationary pressure, so next-gen is also likely to be more expensive still, so waiting it out may not be viable. It is a shame for those in their upgrade cycle end as they face very expensive pricing.

That's not how inflation works. Nvidia is jacking up pricing to increase profit margins, not to push cost-push inflation onto consumers. They are making smaller die products and selling them at larger die prices.
