I find 2 most difficult things in learning Finnish: 1. Spoken language is very different from written language. I can read books in Finnish, but I still have trouble understanding when talking with people. 2. Finns speak very good English, and sometimes people speak English to me even when I speak Finnish to them. I had some conversations when Finns speaking English to me and me replying in Finnish (and conversations went on like that.) I have many friends who have been living in Finland for 5 years+ but don't speak any Finnish, and they always feel that they are foreigners here. So if anyone wants to stay in Finland for long, learning Finnish is a must. Personally I enjoy learning Finnish because I can understand news and watch Finnish shows and TV series. But sometimes it's a bit tiring to go to work 8 hours per day and then go to 3-hour Finnish lessons after work, and still people speak English to me. But anyway there's a will, there's a way :)

I have to take this to heart. But then again, it's so easy for a Finnish person to "ease the tension", and speak English. :P

Literally ignore them, or squint and say 'what!?' in Finnish when they try to speak English to you. It's a problem here in France - people speak (usually terrible, broken) English at you if they even get a sniff that you're not native French. It actually in a lot of cases makes communication much harder. We just tell them that French is fine and if they speak English we just keep saying we don't understand them, and then they revert back to French.

I think this advice goes for all the smaller nations in Europe honestly. If you're just a tourist or going on exchange for 6 months or whatever, there's really no point in learning the language. You won't offend us by not being able to speak our languages, we know they're not really all that useful unless you live here. For people planning on actually moving to another country, I also think that you should learn the language. Otherwise you severely limit yourself and your potential success and enjoyment. It's not just about getting a job but maybe even more importantly about just fitting in. Finnish people (or others.. Danes, Swedes, Austrians, Belgians.. whatever) don't speak English to each other on a daily basis, and if you don't speak the language you *will* feel left out at times. It's not that the locals are actively trying to exclude you but that they obviously use their own language when speaking to each other in their own country. You can't expect a Finn (or whatever) to start speaking English permanently to their friends, family etc. just to be "inclusive" of foreigners wanting to listen in. The language in Finland is Finnish and it's not rude for Finns to speak Finnish to other Finns in Finland. If you feel left out, learn the language. Once you learn the local language you will be able to watch the local news, you will be able to read newspapers, you will be able to participate in small talk at the work place, the football club, the local bar etc. and you will be able to understand everything going on around you in general. While a lot of people in some non-Anglophone countries (Nordics, Netherlands etc) do speak fairly good English, it's still a foreign language to them so they have to translate everything in their heads. It's still much much easier for them to speak in their own language.

Great video as always Aleksi! Personally, I would learn the language in any country where I would happen to live in. Even very basic skills can be quite useful. Being able to read and understand the product labels in supermarkets for example. (not buying "väkiviinaetikka" instead of "vesi") However in Finland being able to speak swedish can also go a long way, because all the product labels are both in finnish and in swedish here. Btw, I think a video about the cost of living in Finland could be pretty interesting (rent, food, internet etc..) Also I don't think that many people know how great Finland is for lactose-intolerant people. How we have pretty much lactose-free variant of every dairy product here. (lactose-free ice cream in many flavours made from real milk and not soy for example) That could make an interesting video too :)

All your notes are true. I can't imagine someone living in a country and plan to stay there and complaining about that country's language, I mean it is obvious thing to learn the language. The issue is there are seldom courses to get to level B2-C1 which is for higher education and job positions that require such high level. That is one reason why Master degree's holders end up doing cleaning jobs. The integration is not very efficient, for example Työtoimisto doesn't most of the time support the foreign integration if the level of Finnish langauge is already B1. The availability of Finnish language education needs to be promoted further.
@derpauleglot97725 жыл бұрын
I´d say that someone at a B1 level should be able to get to an advanced level by themselves. Movies, newspapers, language exchanges etc.

It's like you said. Finns often change back to English very early in a conversation. That's sometimes very sad and I lost confidence in speaking Finnish. But don't worry, I'm back on track and I'm still trying to speak as much as possible, even though it's not that easy in Germany. Most funny thing I ever experienced was, when I asked a (drunk) Finn in Germany why he never answers me in Finnish when I ask him something. He was so shocked when I said that (even more shocked than drunk xD). So maybe some of you don't even realize that you are speaking English to language learners, especially when not in Finland
@AleksiHimself7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Yasmin. To deal with this problem, it's often up to the learning to persist on the Finn to make him/her speak Finnish to you. And that's quite a funny story! Thanks for sharing!

it's like atheism: I don't believe in anything, but I'm a lot more caring about the creation and a lot more Aware of my own sins than most of the believers out there. Analogue learning finnish; I've begun to learn finnish it was roughly five years ago and it's all a matter of commitment (out of a inner urge [like an addiction]) to me. Every time I've contactwith that language I get very emotional, because it's just an other rythm of living in it. Finnish is a very 'sincere' language - it's not only brutally honest, but also quite distinctive.

Good topic. I get your point that if one is not planning to move to Finland or stay there for a long term then there is no need for him/her to learn Finnish. But here's my point of view, you don't really need to go to that particular place or stay in that particular place to learn a language. Not saying you are wrong Aleksi... just trying to tell all the language learners out there that if you wanna learn a language then do it. Don't have to have a purpose of learning it. I can speak 3 languages and I try to learn others too. When people ask me why do I wanna learn their language (for example Tamil, Korean and finnish), my answer would always be "for fun". To me learning language is a fun thing to do. You could compare what are the differences of the other languages in terms of pronunciation, writing and so on. If you are learning Finnish but don't really plan to move to Finland it's totally fine in my opinion. You can still watch some Finnish movie, add the Finnish language in your resume and also speak it when you bump into a Finnish tourist in your own country. No issues. Also, even if you're staying in Finland for a short term it's still good to learn it because it helps you to fit in more and learn bout the culture there. Not to mention, you'll be able to flirt with guys/girls 😉😉😉. Then, I find what Aleksi said was true. Finnish don't really speak Finnish with their partner when the partner is not a Finnish. They prefer to speak English. My Finn boyfriend only speaks Finnish to me when I ask him something in Finnish and most of the time he doesn't really teach me Finnish. I learn in through KZbin. I only go to him when I have questions. Lots of people say Finnish is hard and it discourages people to learn it. Well it's true but I find it easy to pronounce. Like the word "kaksi" . Kak- see . Not hard to say it. Plus, I find that Finnish is a very straightforward language. What is written is almost the same as what is pronounced. Unlike some languages, it's written as asdfghjkl but it's pronounced as something very easy to say. In short, don't be afraid to learn Finnish. 😊 Now only I get to know that his gf is a Japanese.
@AleksiHimself7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alvina for taking time and writing such a great comment. I agree that I should have covered the "fun" part here, but I focused on the fact that if people are coming to Finland. I enjoy languages too and I can speak some Swedish and German too and it's always fun to speak their language if you encounter them! :P

My wife is fluent in French and when we decided to move to France, i made her speak to me for 1 hour per day only in French. I soon got tired of it because i was so crap but it's a good idea if you've got a decent level. If i come to Finland i will just pretend i am French and that i don't speak English. Easy.
@AleksiHimself6 жыл бұрын
She probably didn't slow down her pace enough for you, which ended up discouraging you. Are you implying you don't want to communicate with Finns?
@betavulgaris78886 жыл бұрын
Nooooo i mean if i come to Finland i would make them speak Finnish to me by using the tactic of just pretending i don't speak English. I actually thought of doing this in France - if people hear you're not French they will automatically switch to very poor English. I mean, i'm white so i could be from Estonia or Latvia or Russia but they just switch to English as a default and it's *really* annoying. If i refused to speak English to Finns it would make them speak Finnish. And i'm a great believer that when you're in another country you should speak the language of the country...that should go for the natives too ! Even if Finns have much better English than my Finnish !

He moved to Finland for his family and couldn't get a job anywhere after over a year of searching, he got many calls back but when they found out he didn't speak Finnish the conversation ended there. So he started his own business instead - if you don't speak Finnish at all, entreprenuership might be the only option to get ahead. I actually know quite a few foreign entreprenuers in Finland that went up to start a business due to language barriers in job hunting.

When i first told my Finnish gamer friends that i wanted to learn Finnish, they trolled me at first, giving me that crazy lentokone blah blah word that EVEN THEY NEVER USE, so I went out and found the ONLY Finnish language book in my entire city (after all, who wants to learn Finnish when you're this close to Mexico, right?) and decided to prove to them that some Americans CAN take Finnish seriously. It's been a little over a week now, I came back at them with: Sisu, sauna, salmiakki. Nyt olenko suomalainen?! Norwegian is a easy language, but the hard thing with norwegian, is our many accent/dialects. We have a lot of them. The reason is that not only that its long distanges detween each town(its closer in eastern part, cuz East Norway has may half of the population livin there, including me), is that we dont mind people talking their own accent/dialect. I think thats hard for people who learn norwegian, they only learn one standard, realy high prosentate on bokmål. Perhaps not rare when that standard is the most used one. But still, they dont get used to listen to the accent/dialect, or the most common ones. It actual the same as you say, dont be afraid to try and fail, many can conect sentence and words that should be in the sentence. When it comes to accent/dialects, we doesnt care to switch to one og the standards(nynorsk/bokmål), as long as you writes in one of them. Bit still, its easier for people who can spreak at least one og the germanic language have i heard
@AleksiHimself7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking the time and commenting Clara. I think we Finns have the same problem that we don't adjust our speech when we meet a foreign learner. We also got a number of dialects too. :)

If a foreigner speaks in broken Finnish is that usually understandable? I mean in case of Chinese language if your pronunciation is not exact nobody understands. But for example in English if we pronounce Apple as "Aippal" or "Aepal" or "Aapaal" or other way around native english speaker may understand that you meant "Apple", hence there are many English accents and most of them are understood by native speakers. So my question is, how is it in case of Finnish language? Is it compulsory to have exact pronunciation in Finnish? Considering finnish people avoiding strangers to talk then how one should find someone to talk with in Finnish to practice the language? And obviously when learning a new language one has to talk whatever it is like initiating talk and indulging to talk more and more .. Does that bother ?
@AleksiHimself6 жыл бұрын
Chinese is a tonal language, where the meaning changes depending how you say it. In most languages in Europe this is not the case and neither is with Finnish. Finnish pronunciation is actually very easy because one letter has only one sound, so in my opinion broken Finnish should be understandable. I will make a video about how to find a language partner online. Stay tuned!

I'm best finnish on the hole plant, I'm a lot of serial! Do you know what this means for example: Uusi kuusi luusi muusi. It says: Six new other bones from you. It's a fantasticle sentence, I love it! It doesn't mother when there's (Therese is a Name btw) no verb in a sentence, coz grammer (grand-mère) socks, it really thugs. But a few Things are left which I've not already learnt in finnish: What means 'vuusi', 'nuusi', 'tuusi', 'juusi', 'ruusi', (huusi, puusi, suusi, I already know ['you're shout' maybe @least hän huusi s/he shouted; your tree, your mouth)?]
@AleksiHimself7 жыл бұрын
I think vuusi', 'nuusi', 'tuusi', 'juusi', 'ruusi' do not really have a meaning in today's Finnish. :)

Kuuntele Aleksi... Oon vähän outoa.. en mä ole koskaan Suomessa mutta mä opin sitä kieltä. Osaan puhua jo sujuvasti norjaa (ja tietysti englantia koska se on helppo) + vähän saksaa. No en tiedä miksi.. mutta tykkään niistä maista pohjoisessa. Katsomalla sun videoita suomalaisista, sain selville, että minäkin oon vähän niinku suomalainen. 😁 Jonakin päivänä haluan varmasti vierailla Suomessa ja yllättää suomalaiset 😁 Se kieli on todella hauskaa perrrrkele 😁 "As many languages you know, as many times you are a human being" ❤️

you can start something like to teach the people finnish here isnt that an idea? to create some lessons here
@AleksiHimself7 жыл бұрын
This is something I have been thinking about. However I'm not sure if: 1. It's something people would find interesting 2. If I can teach well enough so ppl would understand. :P I could create some fun & useful lessons (such as the how to swear in Finnish :P) instead of some regular grammar stuff. Would like to hear more comments about this. :)

It would be pretty nice if you could make videos in finnish with English subtitles (Like the interviews) also the grammar could be fun to be honest because it's so random that I am sure it can easily make people laugh in the right context ;)

I hate when ppl tell you that a language is useless. They are yelling to the world their stupidity. Every language is useful once you start learning it.

8:00 Butt I cannot speaking 'inglish', because I'm not understanding why one should be able to comprehending unending ways of an ing-ending manner of speaking. I'm just not getting the use of it! I'm seriousling to you right now: woulding you really appreciating ANY ulkomalaiset to only speak about happenings, which aren't going to beeing completed in any time? I'm meaning of continuosling Things and I'ming only aiming making the stuff clear, because I'm using to have had everything nailing right in time and I'm in no way believing in any situations happening non-situationing! Diding you getting this? Bott as you already may have been concluding before, I'm defintely not... I mean: I don't want any Kind of inglish to be spoken at least in front of my children - to be clear! Whatever a Fashion it might be out there in Hollywood AT LEAST I RESIST! and I'm not resisting. I resist! To come to the point: I totally understand the finnish people, when they want the inglians to clean up! It also makes sense to let them clean the Floor, so that they are cleaning people. They shouldn't have done any job, but they should do it over and over again (like sisiphos)!
