@@jwmj2897 Real pricing is so hard to find man. And what you do find is all over the place. They'll say things like "$30 - $160 an acre depending" or "$99 - $240/hr depending" But they wont break down what depending is. Personally, I have been laughed at for a quote and been told I was cheap for the same type/size quote. I made $1300 to record raw video of a RV park. I made $150 taking pics of a house for a realtor. I made $3500 for making a map of a corridor that was 6 miles long and 120' wide. So....good luck. And you find a magical price sheet for drone services please let me know!

This is like what computers with Excel and estimating software that can read AutoCad files has done to the construction industry. When I got out of college in the early 80's it could take three trained professional construction estimators, two or three weeks to go through 50 huge sheets of blue prints and a 300 page spec book from the architects in order to put together an estimate and submit a bid to do the construction of a million-dollar-plus construction project. The cost of doing the estimate itself has to be added to the price of the construction project - maybe 350 man hours. Now, one man does the same thing in one single day. It's totally a win-win for everybody on multiple levels. Three weeks is chopped off of the process which cuts three weeks of interest-carry on the loan the real estate developer has, the construction company can have a much higher mark-up on it's estimating cost because it's still going to be only a fraction of the price of what it used to be. Instead of three men, full time, estimating 20 projects a year to bid on, one man can do 200. Lidar, post processing software, and high performance drones can do the same thing to the surveying industry.

How are you getting the DATA to NAD83 and NAVD88 data to be used with FEMA elevations an engineer will need? You said you average the RS2 this will not be correct with out PPK the data to a CORS station or use a reference network such as Trimble or Leica to start with. Great informative video Dylan. Just out of curiosity, the R2A comes with a 24mp Sony camera integrated into the LIDAR package, why not use the photos captured with that rather than fly a separate mission using the P1? Was that for comparative purposes for those using traditional photogrammetry methods to capture survey data?
@DylanGorman
@DylanGorman 2 жыл бұрын
It was more of a comparison between LiDAR data and Photogrammetry data for surface penetration. The colorized point cloud shown on the LiDAR data was from the 24mp Sony sensor that is on there so theoretically we can process orthos with those without a second flight needed.
@cascadestreamsolutions4211
@cascadestreamsolutions4211 2 жыл бұрын
John - I can't speak to why Dylan reflies an area with the P1, but I can say why I do. I have a GVI LV70 with a Sony 24 mp Nex camera and a separate P1 payload. The P1 photos are far superior to the Sony. If I want colorized LiDAR I can do it in LiGeo. Yes it increases the collection time, but for my purposes it isn't a significant cost. Also, the P1 can collect data at twice the speed or more than the LV70. GVI recommends a velocity of about 5 m/s and flight heights of 60 m or less. One can fly with a P1 at 120 m at a speed of 13 m/s. The downside of the P1 is the file size. Orthomosaics can be 10 gb or more, so I use GeoExpress to convert them to sid format to use in Civil 3D, ArcMap, or QGIS. I think it comes down to what meets your needs. Also, the GVI LV70, which looks remarkably similar to the Rockrobotics and a few other LiDAR units, there is a slight shift in the orthophoto because the GPS is based on the LiDAR sensor not the camera.

Ive offered LiDAR consulting, sales, service and training for years. To be successful in sUAS LiDAR, you must have substantial contacts in the respective industries that have a need for it. I focus primarily in surveying, construction and civil engineering and I have customers that bill well over $1,000,000 a year (small, ‘mom and pop’ customers at that); i agree 100% with what Doug is saying….the data is like gold to a lot of companies. However, you must have the contacts to make it work. For a good, mid range sUAS solution you’re going to be in the 100k range. Add another 15 to 25k for equipment to shoot ground shots and a computer that can process it (your off the shelf Best Buy computer will not handle these datasets). Good luck!

Good video explaining the niches of the technology. A word of caution for those wanting to hop on the bandwagon. Be very cognizant of state laws where you are operating. Legally where I do business with Lidar Technology, all controls and deliverables MUST be approved and certified by a Land Surveyor or Engineer to be used! You cannot just go do the scan, set your own control and sell to these companies who want this data. It will be worthless to them or you will be taken to court for Surveying without a license from the state board you are flying in. I have heard horror stories about lots of unlicensed work going on where surveyors are being approached randomly to certify data they didn't collect. Not good for our business!
@DylanGorman
@DylanGorman 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, great point you brought up here that I forgot to mention in the video. Every state does have its own laws regarding selling and distributing "survey" grade data. I did try and mention that if you are not a surveyor to either work with one or only use this data as a "construction" layout model as you can easily get yourself tied up into some legal trouble if you present that data improperly.
@airartisan
@airartisan 2 жыл бұрын
@@DylanGorman I would highly advise to not even present the data as a construction layout model to a general contractor. Once again you will assume high levels of liability risk by doing so. Unless you work with an engineer/surveyor, you cannot provide topographic data. The only good the data does for you is a reality capture asset that can be used to create a digital twin for an artistic type of market place. Now structure inspections on the other hand are a bit of a different animal. There is much more room for growth in those industries for independent pilots. Places like solar panel farms, tower and roof inspections, powerline modeling for local municipalities.

Check the state regulations you want to provide data in. In CA and OR, licensed civil engineers and surveyors can collect topographic data and sell it. @caasinauj
@caasinauj 2 жыл бұрын
Not many licensed surveyors would take responsibility. I can see some of the contours are being "pulled" due to lack of proper grade breaks. In TX topographic data is not regulated by the state board so engineers use this type of data since they place a disclaimer to match to existing grade on their construction plans.

$50k vs a simple camera on a drone. LiDAR is good, but like u say, it takes gold to purchase it. If you don't mind saying, how much do you charge for a survey, let's say 10 ac track?

Is it allowed to fly the heavy matrice in cities in the US? In the EU this is no opportunity whatsoever.
@DylanGorman
@DylanGorman 2 жыл бұрын
That is unfortunate. So far in the US we don't have those kinds of restrictions. However there are restrictions in place for how you fly the drone. Now if you fly a drone over 55lbs (25kg) then you need additionally certifications to fly it commercially.

For the Job or the Drone?
@mclovin9151
@mclovin9151 2 жыл бұрын
I think I meant the job. For example, say you need to survey 100 acres of undeveloped land for a company putting in a shopping district there. What I understand, is that what you can do for them is fly your LiDAR drone above the land and create a highly accurate 3D interactive model of the land and it’s features that you could send them over in a file that they could run in a program? How much might a large company pay for this? I’d assume you aren’t charging hourly and you can price estimate a job?

Sorry man , you are misrepresenting Lidar . It is expensive in comparison to Photogrammetry which is in fact as if not more accurate than Lidar. Vegetation, Lidar does not see thru"vegetation , if you stand in a forest and and see light ,lidar can measure it. Bear in mind it is not ground level , there is forest detritus above ground level. So yes very useful for planning, or research such as flood planning.
@DylanGorman
@DylanGorman 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I have some data sets that show my statement off pretty well to the point where even surveyors were surprised at how well LiDAR penetrated through heavily vegetated areas.

@@DylanGorman I have been a Surveyor and Photogrammetrist for over 50 years. I use all the latest technology. Fact is the contours are interpolated between observed points where light is SEEN thru the canopy. I have datasets that show clearly canopy has not been removed. But as a Surveyor I understand that it is not always Ground level , but on top of fallen and accumulated branches leaves etc. So I did not decry lidar, but the tool should be used with understanding.

I hear you. Overall this video was to show a basic overview of LiDAR and some use-cases. I know theres a lot more to it but its impossible to cover everything in a 15 min video. LiDAR is a fantasist tool though when it comes to looking at vast amounts of terrain (even heavily vegetated ones), but again it depends on how it's being applied and interpreted just like you said. I do believe that LiDAR has come a long way in terms of its tech and accuracy. Its just another tool at the end of the day.

$50K is fairly cheap compared to the millions of $$$ that people used to spend to get access to this technology. It is still a lot of money for most people but again technology is evolving so fast that soon this tech will only cost about $20K-$30K

okay so....where is the metaverse? not like location, i mean what content is there for it? it literally seems like a ponzi scheme by Meta to just pump hot air into their stock. like, if I want to go in the metaverse right now....what do I do? what content is out for it?
@DylanGorman
@DylanGorman 2 жыл бұрын
So metaverse can be as simple as a virtual tour (like matterport) or as complex as fully virtual worlds that people are selling virtual things on (like NFT's). There is no one definition for the metaverse other than its basically everything that is virtualized from the physical world. That is a very simple way of explaining it!

I really wish you would stop defining photogrammetry so generically. You clearly have no idea of the capabilities/performance of high end professional aerial photogrammetry, and repeatedly class photogrammetry only from the consumer "point and squirt" entry point, which has become popular due to consumer drones and entry level software packages that do little more than render the image over a poor TIN/DEM. Good videos Dylan and again, I congratulate you for doing what you do and love your passion for it... but please, understand there is a vast range in photogrammetry and I've personally used all of it from state-of-the-art (in all it's steps, from the 80's to now) in aerial, satellite, terrestrial, stereo, analytical to digital all the way to multi image, measuring F1 race cars and space craft to tens of microns... MICRONS! Rant over... keep up the good work!
