this is comparing nerd apples to oranges, but MTG right now is very similar to the Ruthless Aggression era of the WWE. After a huge surge in popularity from the Attitude Era, Vince McMahon realized he had to sanitize his cash cow to reach a wider audience. Changes had to be made that would alienate the old audience, but would retain the newer, younger fans which represented a larger fan base and more money. Making generic themes like cowboy, detective, cyberpunk, Norse gods, fairy tales - things the zeitgeist already understands is making Wizards so much money right now. To try to do something truly unique and dark like the early years (which featured war, eugenics, class warfare etc.) wouldn't necessarily mean a flop if the cards are strong, but it would make the parent of the child asking for the cards at Target stop and reconsider. Silly hats, cute cats/dogs/mascots, neon colors, these things are welcoming, non-threatening no risk choices for the company to make. Thank you for attending my TED talk.

Mechanic changes are fine since I think planes are mostly defined by their aesthetic, lore, and flavor. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty felt very much like a future version of Kamigawa and even worked in the juxtaposition between the spirituality and nature of old Kamigawa into the new techno landscape of new Kamigawa as theme -- I personally like Boseiju, Who Endures as an example (RIP, sweet prince). Lost Caverns of Ixalan felt like it took place inside some caverns of Ixalan that had been lost and kept Ixalans spirit of exploring new lands. Murders at Karlov manor, ont he other hand, didn't bother at all to incorporate contemporary murder mystery tropes into Ravnica's eastern European aesthetics or guild system -- it just slapped fedoras and bowler hats on the art. At this point though it probably doesn't matter. The lore doesn't seem like something most players or WotC's narrative team cares about outside of providing information for the wiki about mascot characters and some loose justification for why everyone goes from detective cosplay to cowboy cosplay in the course of a couple of months. The Omenpath arc is almost an explicit declaration by Wizards that planes don't matter anymore. Everything is set dressing.

A buddy of mine and I tried to start a $100 EDH league at an lgs by us. We had 20 ppl show up to the 1st event; the owner agreed to let us run it and would give us store credit based on turn out since we’re helping the shop. Basically was a budget cedh turnout, and i had a very good Emry list that i made top 4 pod with. Afterwords the owner gave us nothing, and wanted to change the rules and take our idea, so we dropped the whole thing altogether. Keeping edh casual at the lgs without entry fees is best. Let cedh do whatever as long as it isnt at casual tables.

orange county choppers went from a show about building motor cycles that were really cool into full blown reality show that sold merch instead of actually making sweet custom choppers but the reality is West coast customs still made custom choppers they just didn't make them much on the show because people didn't want to see that they wanted the Blizzard Horde chopper or the Bill Murry Caddyshack chopper.

My opinion is they should keep trying something different with the planes/sets that initially weren't received too well (Ixalan, Kamigawa, Homelands, etc.) since players don't have too strong of an attachment to them, whereas making drastic changes to established and well-received planes (ex: Ravnica with Murders) is too risky and likely to flop.

Ravnica felt less like updating a plane and more that you can't have a compelling murder mystery set with characters nobody cares about, so they chose their most popular setting to throw detectives at.

@@Balileart Though, why even go with the weird murder-mystery-theme at all? It didn't seem like something that can reasonably carry an entire magic set, and MKM actually seems to have confirmed that. I think your second idea would have made much more sense. Have some kind of cleanup be the major focus of the return to Ravnica, either as an upbeat celebration and reconstruction kind of set, or if we wanted a darker tone, then have it be hunting down some remnants of Phyrexian traitors or cult fanatics supporting Phyrexia or somesuch. It's just really disappointing that Ravnica was revisited in a new, dedicated set, and the main gimmick of the plane, as in the guilds, basically didn't mean anything at all.

I enjoy Richard's perspectives on Magic precisely because I don't often agree or see things the same, but his take on Commandeer feels spot on. Like yeah, if that's actually worth both including in your deck and then costing 3 entire cards, there's probably deeper issues at play.

I think he's wrong because it has nothing to do with power level but because no one likes playing around open mana all for it to not matter because a card broke the rules of the game. Commandeer isn't good, but "we don't want free spells" has little to do with quality.

Currently, there are very few decks in the timeless meta game that can take advantage of mana drain. The main ones are the show and tell decks and the lurrus decks. Show and tell is mainly because you can counter their two drop, untap, and play show and tell with mana up for another counterspell. Lurrus decks want it because you will always have an outlet for the first mana drain since you can spend the mana on buying lurrus. Anything besides that will need to be a whole new archetype which would be exciting I think.

The loot plush looks weird but I've seen enough Pokemon plushes to know it's very hard to make a plush that looks like a card game fantasy animal and the smaller the plush the harder. That being said, both the Loot arts were so creepy to me. This just looks kinda frumpy. It goes, from least creepy to most creepy: plush, original art, alternate art.

it’s just a fools errand what they’ve been doing to not only constantly reuse the popular planes like Ravinca or Innistrad but assuming you could somehow recapture the lighting if you’d just give it the right silly hat. No amount of Sorin smut or holiday specials Ravinca cards are ever going to outdo those original blocks the way wotc wants them these to. You know what they should be doing? More Kamigawa type Renovations. Even the stuff that they were able to come up with for Eldraine and Ixalan’s sequel sets shows that wotc shouldn’t have to hold themselves hostage by playing things safe with only the most super popular settings. They HAVE the technology and if there’s enough actual passion and not just all about trend chasing, they have the ability to get things right. Throw out the Rabiah scale. Give the people a super cool modern take on Mercadia or Shandalar or Homelands. Stop trying to put Ravinca into different cosplay and just let that stuff take a break before we break them beyond repair.

I'm honestly shocked they actually made a plushy. They're so bad about merchandising Magic's characters more generally that I just assumed there wouldn't be anything. Can I have an Avacyn body pillow now, WotC? When it comes to "different" returns, I've enjoyed them when they feel like a good fit for the world. LCI was great, as it felt like an extension of Ixalan's overall feel and tone of exploration and expeditions and the like. Things like VOW and MKM that go into completely different tones I like a lot less

So I would buy a loot plushie for dice purposes :) Regarding the planes thing with Mark Rosewater. Lost cavern of Ixalan felt VERY Ixalan. For murders of karlov mannor, I was honestly confused and thought it was murders at "markov" mansion, until the spoilers came and I saw it was ravnika. So I think trying something new is fine so long the spirit of the plane is there.

The queue issue at the early event could probably be fixed by having a lock on what can be played. E.g. day one is standard only. Day two is draft only. Day three is brawl only etc.

Did you get a great job in creating the Fallout show in such a way that would be enjoyable for both new and returning people to the Fallout universe. I highly recommend watching the Fallout show. It's pretty dang good. I have a few qualms but overall the show was done very well. So regardless if the mtg set was done to promote it, the set introduced some real neat cards.

My LGS has commander pod nights and the winner gets a pack. 90% of the time it's fine, but it's pretty bad for new players. They will inevitably run into someone who's just playing something way too strong because they want easy packs for the new set. Whenever my playgroup gets together outside of pods, we just have more fun cause we can just play whatever you want, politic without it costing anyone a pack or anything. We still play on commander night, but it's still not as fun.

I don't think Mana Drain is comparable to Brainstorm. Brainstorm is more like The One Ring; it's a ridiculously powerful effect that does nothing by itself, it just facilitates anything or everything else you want to do with your deck. Mana Drain explicitly stops something your opponent is doing and instead of a tempo loss for you, it's a gain, potentially a big one. That's clearly problematic. Show and Tell isn't either of those things, it's just 'the best card in your hand now costs 3 mana' which is also clearly problematic, like all of the free or overly powerful ramp sources. Not to say you must ban either, but as one of you mentioned it's probably if the free counters come to Arena in MH3 that would keep them around much longer.

Hot Take: Show and Tell is not that good in Timeless. I almost never lose to it, though I suspect I have a better matchup against it than other midrange decks do and I think the stock S&T list is perhaps misbuilt. Control is also pretty bad in Timeless right now, to the point that I've come around to thinking the format might benefit from having it available as a 4-of. Another hot take would have been that the format you should abandon is Pioneer/Explorer not Historic, as Historic is a superior Shock-not-Fetch format, but I guess Historic isn't strictly that anymore with the addition of Prismatic Vista. It's still a cool format, though it's suffering from its lack of curation (perhaps Slickshot Show-Off will finally get them to do something about Wizards). Loot as a character or stuffed product is meant for people different from me, and his card itself is Commander bullshit of the highest order, but I feel compelled to offer critical support for him, because his existence and prominence in the story vastly increases the chance that Claim the Firstborn will be printed back into Standard.

I like MTGO because it shuffles for me, which is really nice. I really dislike MTGO because the program still runs like a program built in 2002. My computer can render extremely complex 3D objects in fractions of a second, why does it take 8 seconds to load 40 images when I cast a Rampant Growth? How has the pernicious memory leak, that everybody's known about for 18 years at this point, only gotten worse as time goes on? The whole thing just feels like everybody who's ever worked on the product was practicing "Quiet Quitting" from day one.

57:30 Yep, Universes Beyond turned MtG into an advertising platform. 2000 to about 2023 will be remembered as a golden age of creative content production. Now and going forward it's mostly companies milking the successful IPs in every way possible. Thankfully that will create space for upstarts to gain traction as non-exploitative platforms. But MtG is now just a tired ad platform, and the original creative content will continue to atrophy away.

Personally, im not a big fan of going to old planes and innovating their themes. I like altering how the overall themes work, like innistrad having vampires, and shadows over innistrad having madness vampires, but if we went to innistrad and it wasnt a kindred set around the types of innistrad, i would be pretty disappointed

Early returns on 2024 make it seem like Hasbro is going all-in on the 'commodification' of the game. Multiple UB sets a year starting in 2025, an ostensibly forced Clue tie-in and now the addition of Loot, who checks all the criteria for being a puerile corporate mascot conceived solely for the purpose of merchandising. One can only wonder in mild bemusement what Hasbro is cooking next. I will concede that I have a minor degree of admiration for the suits behind Loot giving it that name, nothing like a satirical take on money being the nexus of everything.

Y'all do what you want but the Spelltable Clashes have been very underwhelming for me. No idea what's in your hands, your board states are often impossible to understand, the proxies used for theft effects and such are even more confusing and, as mentioned, many triggers/abilities missed make for improper outcomes. And seriously, you keep mentioning "staples" but there aren't real staples not on MtGO that I know of. Only cards that can be pretty good in some corner cases but nothing more. Anyway, that's just me, you do you, after all, it's your channel. It's more my issue with Spelltable than you. I am so tired of all the channels doing Spelltable gameplay, that's all. Paper Magic is better in person.
