In Bulgaria, approximately 20% of all personal cars are working on LPG, even hybrids like Toyota Prius and Honda Insight etc. Perhaps 99% of all gas stations have LPG spots. LPG is always filled up by an employee of the gas station and you never do it alone. LPG prices are at least twice and in many occasions 2.5 times lower than petrol or diesel. Additional benefit of having an LPG System is that depending on your car, usually you are able to drive over 1200 miles without refilling (when using both of your tanks - LPG and Petrol one after another). LPG is in fact much more environment friendly than both P and D and in big cities it is waaay better. Even much older cars can produce less emissions working on LPG than modern petrol and diesel engines. Almost any engine could work on LPG and installing such system could be done for under one working day by one guy. However, the most benefits are obvious for cars with bigger engines and high annual mileage. Usually, the price of installing such system is already spared after the first 10k miles on LPG. Maintenance is cheap and rare. I am not a professional, but I travel over 50k miles a year and for me, even small differences in price per mile is significant in long term so naturally all my cars are working on LPG.

I live in turkey and its the fate of any old car to run on lpg because of fuel prices. The availability is the same as gasoline in here, almost every station has a lpg pump. The biggest cons here are you have to pay extra during inspection and your car will be banned from entering underground car parks (its stupid so most people ignore it, modern kits have a safety valve that shuts off the tanks output completely the moment you turn the ignition off), but sadly in my country there are many bad examples of conversions, left out safety bits, engines losing power, burning valves because of bad adjustments etc. my own car, a 1974 beetle also runs on the stuff, and i do the adjustments on my own and its really happy running on lpg, no loss of power and if anything its more reliable because i dont need to worry about jets getting clogged, i can drive flat out for hours with no worries of overheating at all.

Firstly, it is Dual not Duel - Duel means to fight. Having run LPG cars since the 1980s, a few points I need to perhaps improve you on. For wear and tear - not about being a cleaner burning fuel, more about it being is a gaseous, which unlike atomised petroleum fuel, doesn’t dissolve the thin oil layer on your cylinder bores (so called “bore washing”). So, whilst the upper cylinder does wear a lot less due to this, it doesn’t necessarily prolong the life of other parts of the engine. Also being a gas (dry), the valves and valve seats do wear a lot more, due to the lack of lubrication from the petrol but they don’t carbon up in the intake system and combustion chamber. We put a new head gasket on an engine which had 350,000 km and the original hone marks were still visible in the cylinders and very little carbon to be seen anywhere. It also doesn’t pollute the oil, so even in old engines, when you drain the oil it comes out like a brown ale and not like a Guinness in colour. They do lose a little power because LPG is a gas and petrol is a vapor/atomised (a mist), so it displaces air during induction, so your engine can not breath as well (think high altitude has less oxygen). The downside is that they use more fuel due as their fuel metering systems are generally very old tech mixers, which are very simple carburettors, so they are nowhere near the economy of a modern EFI engine. So, whilst being a lot cheaper per litre, your actual costs per KM isn’t as good. Like your comparison, I get very similar costs per KM for an LPG 2.7L 4-cylinder automatic vs 2.0 Turbo Diesel manual, despite diesel being twice as expensive.

The last time LPG was pushed for dual fuel cars in the UK, the government hiked the price massively. So much so, in fact, that the slightly worse MPG it gives compared to unleaded petrol made it a futile escapade. Also, engines run so hot that engine valves take a real hammering. A chap I know had his Vauxhall Vectra dual fuel car eat its valves in no time. That aside, the powers that be won't ever allow us cheap motoring in the long term - too much loss in tax revenue !

Thanks for your input Michael I had never even heard of LPG before we started looking at campers, hopefully our valves hang on whilst we make it round Ireland. Sounds right about the government anything to keep the taxes up, makes more sense why we don't have more LPG in the country then.

The valve issues were sorted quite a while ago, if you are running a motor which is still susceptible to valve wear then you can have a lubrication system installed for about 50 quid with your conversion, it's about 20 quid for a refill of fluid every few thousand miles. Certainly cheaper than refilling AdBlue. Technology eh!

This is very interesting. I hadn't heard of lpg until pretty much this week. I'm 30 and finally looking into getting myself a set of wheels (late to the game i know lol) been doing my research between deisel, petrol and an e-vehicle or hybrid. Mostly trying to evaluate running costs and availability over the initial purchase of the vehicle. This was really helpful in helping me understand lpg as its certainly far less talked about over other options. Thanks!

Wait until you learn about CNG or methane conversion kits. Though they come with a lot more trade-offs and caveats compared to propane, like the inability to install the tank in the place of your spare tire so as not to trade off your trunk space. But refuelling costs 3 times cheaper than gas and it's basically as clean as a hybrid, if not better than that. If one works as a taxi driver full-time, it's worth investing in a system like that due to not needing lots of free space in the trunk - provided that you have enough methane stations in your city. Methane is getting increasingly more popular in Russia and other countries, while almost every sensible driver going long ranges has already switched to propane, which is basically the golden ratio for riding cheap and not having to make many trade-offs. The toroidal propane tanks, which are installed in the place of your spare tire, have become a game-changer for those interested in converting to propane.

There are about 3 petrol garages along my route into work which is a 40 mile trip so its not so bad to find places. I fill up along work, if i didn't id have to drive a bit (15mins) to fill up where I live. Ive been running LPG cars since 2011 when I bought a Land Cruiser 4.7v8 which had already been converted; at 16 to the gallon it was quite necessary. Whenever I buy a petrol car I get it converted right away, my latest is only a little 1.6 that does about 35mpg but it's a nice simple engine without any expensive high tech parts, as I've seen petrol surge beyond 2 quid a litre I'm still paying 75-84p per litre of LPG and sometimes even less if you are near to a flogas outlet. If you put the conversion onto a credit card and use the savings to pay it off you'll be in profit after about 7-8000 miles these days. Bargain.

Been toying with the idea of picking up and rx8 and converting it to lpg. Carbon tends to be a big contributor to killing rotaries so there’s an argument that lpg may help prevent this. Lpg does run dry though but there are also kits to help lubricate them like a lot of standard rotary owners add two stroke oil.

LPG in my country became available as a fuel in ~2005-2006. But in the beggining, only commercial vehicles were allowed to use it (so taxis, vans etc). Then in 2011, the market opened up for everyone, and the number of gas stations offering LPG increased exponentially. After last year's fuel prices hikes (gasoline went from 1,6 -> 2,3 €/L, diesel from 1,3 -> 1,9 €/L) I finally had enough paying for gasoline. I have a 2011 Opel Astra J (with the 1.4 turbo 140hp engine). With gasoline it got ~7,5-8 L/100km. Gave 1200€ for an LPG conversion on a reputable LPG/CNG workshop in my area. Crunched the numbers and it turns out that the €/km for LPG has HALF of the gasoline one. Needed about 15.000km to recoup the investment, and after that, I was a bit cheaper that modern diesels. Now (early January 2023) fuels prices are ~1,8 €/L for gasoline, ~1,7 €/L for diesel, ~0,9 €/L for LPG and ~1,2 €/kg for CNG. With LPG my Astra get ~9 L/100km. Done already 30.000km and looking forward to more. I wish I've made the switch years earlier. (pre 2022 gasoline was ~1,6 €/L and LPG ~0,6 €/L) If I was to buy a new car today, it would have to be LPG/CNG or even maybe a diesel if the price is right. To hell with gasoline, im done with it.

We have only LPG cars in our family. LPG is much better fuel and there is even moders that can get 1000hp with LPG in my country. Reason why there are "cons" is beacause of bad servicing and instalation of LPG. LPG is igniting faster than gasoline and Valves sometimes doesn't close fast enough and they get burned. You just need to change ignition settings on software. Second thing is loss of horsepower. Another mith that is hurting LPG. With 4 gen LPG you don't lose any HP, sometimes you even gain additional HP. Only problem with LPG its lubrication beacause it is dry gas. This problem can be resolve cheaply by using lubrication kit or by adding normal fuel on high revs to save Valves. LPG is very underated for what it is. It is very sad that new cars can't get LPG conversion cheaply. News cars needs to have 6gen LPG conversion kit that can cost 3000-4000$ where 4gen LPG can cost 1000-1500$ for older engines without Direct fuel injectors

Suprised to hear that, as video claims BP and Shell both pulled out of retailing LPG in 2016 and 2020. Maybe BP had a re-think. Nearest LPG station for me is 9 miles away, so if that station closed or stopped selling LPG i would have to travel almost 20 miles to find LPG....seriously considering my next car to be LPG /Bi-Fuel.

Payed 1200€ 9 months ago to convert a 2011 Opel Astra J with the 1.4 turbo 140hp engine. The price included everything (kit purchace, installation, tuning, technical inspection and relevant fees). Took 4 days from handing the car to getting it back. With gasoline I was consuming ~7.5-8 L/100km. Now with LPG i sit ~9 L/100km. You cannot tell which fuel it uses, the performance is the same (as it should). Took me ~15.000km to recoup the installation, after that, im running cheaper than most diesels out there. Its almost cheaper for me to drive around for no reason to stay warm that to turn on the central heating to the home :P

I ran and converted 3 cars 🚙 at total cost of £3800 for all Three cars 🚘 🚗 ran them almost 200k miles on LPG between 2006-2018 12 years saved more thousands on fuel ⛽️ but the main 3 issues first the cost of LPG is going up so close to Petrol ⛽️ second is availability of LPG is difficult even with Filllpg app and finally the conversion costs are going up as most petrol ⛽️ cars 🚙 are now direct injection engine requirements for complex conversion are £2000+ up to £3500 for some cars 🚙 so seriously a good diesel ⛽️ cars get 50-60mpg making the LPG not worth the hassle imho and the death nail is that many new ULEZ don’t acknowledge any LPG conversion making LPG not even a transition fuel of choice in the UK but other parts of world such as Turkey 🇹🇷 and Poland 🇵🇱 things are very different where LPG is still a viable option for many as I found in my recent trip to Poland 🎉

Just started looking at LPG as an option to save money. 451 miles = £100. I’m currently getting 750 miles out of £100 in my 15 yr old diesel mondeo. You could drop the back seats and throw a mattress in the back of it too if you really wanted. Think I’ll stick with the dirty diesel for now 🤔

you do make great points for propane but i have to strongly disagree with prolonging the life of the vehicle, from my experience maintaining a propane powered fleet of package trucks, it significantly reduces the life and requires alot of maintenance. it does burn very clean ( to the point you can run then inside a building) but propane burn very hot, pretty quickly for a car depending on the engine it will completely burn out the cats and 02 sensors pretty quick, gaskets and seals get torn up and worn fast, as well as spark plugs. if you live in an area with large temperature changes like Canada, your mileage will also fluctuate and fuel leaks as the lines slightly shrink and expand. Propane is good in concept but unless the engine is designed for it like a forklift the fuel saving do not benefit you in the long run

Are you sure about that 20% discrepancy?, having owned a couple of lpg vehicles in the past, the calorific value to petrol is less than 10%, and because of the increase in ethanol in petrol (e10), and the fact lpg has a high octane rating, the difference ought to be negligible.

Been running my Landcruiser on LPG / Petrol for the last 24 years in Australia. Its a great fuel and very clean despite what the sceptics say. You only need to look at the exhaust pipes of cars running on it to see how clean they are and also the engine oil which if run solely on LPG does not darken at all as there is zero carbon created in the combustion. Economy wise LPG may not get exactly the same mileage as petrol however i have found it to be a very minimal difference but with 95l of petrol and 100 LPG can go a very long way between fill ups. Govts are making it more difficult to get LPG and even banning other forms of gas here which is outright stupidity as theyre ill informed and only seeking votes yet quite happy to export it....the mind boggles

Would have to be something very significant to explode with the strength of the tanks, if that happened you can bet that your petrol tank will already have exploded by that point, plus if there's a puncture the loss of pressure ensures the lpg escapes as gas it's not sloshing around in the tank like petrol waiting to cook off
