In some European countries LPG is very popular. For example in Poland it's difficult to find a gas station which DON'T sell LPG. It's about half price of regular gasoline and car uses about 10% (LPG has about 10% less calories than petrol). Basically you're driving for half the price There are pretty much no drawbacks to this system. It's cleaner, cheaper etc. LPG eats through catalytic converters after long time due to higher EGT. But it requires about 150000 Kms to do visible harm to it. The only problem are direct injection engines which are costly to install LPG system (twice as expensive to install and use petrol to lubricate the injectors) Nice to see this technology expand In Japan taxis also use this system
@telocho3 жыл бұрын
It's not a constant stream of gas, the engine pulls a little vacuum on the low pressure side (through the venturi of the mixer under your air cleaner), and inside the vaporizer is a diaphragm reacting on it and opening and closing a valve depending the need. The mixture screw is needed to set your CO2 levels during idle for emissions. It's crude but works perfectly fine on any pre-emissions car without O2 sensor. If the car has a O2 sensor, then you need an additional LPG ECU which basically acts as a slave unit to the car's own petrol ECU. Regarding lubricating the valves, if the car is suited for lead free petrol, you have hardended valve seats and are good. Should the car nead leaded fuel (or lead replacement/additive), it is wise to have the engine overhauled and install hardened valve seats, or use a LPG valve additive.

That truck has hardened valve seats, all later motors made for unleaded gas do have. Hardened valve seats are a MUST! Old engine service manuals will tell you that. Old Engines made for leaded gas usually do not have them. Back in the late '60s my father worked for a GMC dealership. A local propane company converted all their new delivery trucks to propane. In 20k miles, the valves were junk, and the seats gone in those smallblock Chevies, GM wouldn't warranty them. A Caterpillar generator tech told me that they de-rated a Deisel generator by 50% if converted to propane. Propane benefits from higher compression to restore some power. An old gas tractor engine may have 7:1 on gas and 9:1 on propane. But still suffer a little power loss. We used to "cheat" and install propane overbore kits and pistons in our gas-powered antique tractors that were made for 75 octane gas. A 1952 Massey Harris 44 gas motor was 260 cubic inches and 6.4:1 compression. A 44 special propane was 277 ci and 9:1 with less power. Automotive engines can easily run around 10.0 cr on iron heads or 11.0 cr on aluminum heads on propane, as it is 104-112 octane. The higher compression will restore torque, and then a little hotter cam can be used to restore power. Or turbocharing or supercharging at higher boost levels than pump gas can be used. Pourpose built engines aren't needed but perform much better with it. Always install a filter in the supply line propane was called "greasy air" for a reason and can contain the same dirt and rust as gasoline.

Changing up your LPG system for an Impco Model L or E converter and a Impco 425 complex mixer would help with your power and economy. They are easy enough to rebuild if you can get them cheap enough second hand. New they are fairly expensive, might not be worth the cost to upgrade. Down here in Australia, we used to have a lot of LPG vehicles. Not as many these days, which seems rather silly as it's plentiful here in Australia, much cheaper than petrol, and burns cleaner. I've been running it in my car's as dual fuel setups for over 20 years now, with a basic mixer ring setup like this in my old 74 torana. Horrible mileage and lost a bit of power, but it was horrible mileage on petrol too. Then I had some 90's fuel injected Ford 6 cyl's with Impco 225 complex mixer setups. I had a Impco 425 on my v8 falcon. Much better for power & economy. Then I got a falcon 6 & fit the injected gas setup to it, wow, almost exact same power on gas & petrol, only 10% worse economy, and gas was way cheaper, 1/3rd the cost of petrol back then. Just recently fit a new 4th gen I think it is, OBD2 compliant AC Qmax Injected gas system on my 96 BMW v8, same sort of power on gas as per petrol, and it seems to be running only 5 to 7% worse economy on gas, but gas is half the price of petrol, so huge savings. We fit a 5th gen Liquid Gas Injection setup to my wife's 5.4lt v8 " BOSS 260" Falcon Xr8 almost 10 years ago now. That actually makes more power on gas, 185 RWKW on petrol and 210 RWKW on gas, for a little less than 5% worse economy on gas vs petrol. Unfortunately it's hard to get Liquid gas hardware to do the conversions in Australia atm, so I only went with the Vapour injection on the BMW. Which I ended up having to source the kit from Europe anyway, as our local suppliers were all out of v8 stuff.

I have a '67 Ford F350 wrecker/ tow truck, with an FE360 engine and a 2bbl carburetor (Autoline 2100).... when I work I use it with LP propane and the gasoline is only used to start the engine, the problem is that when I tow heavy loads and on steep slopes, coolant temp rises above 200°F, stays between 200 and 205, fluctuates in that zone, in the red zone, sometimes it gets to 210°F, and when that happens, the oil starts to lose pressure, from 40psi , it drops to 30 some times it drops to 25, and the sound of the Lifters starts (normally the pressure fluctuates between 40psi and 45psi), I am currently using Valvoline VR1 20W50, because it is high in zddp.

@@mrmaxstorey Another thing to consider is that if you run the propane/butane richer, it burns hotter. There isn't really much benefit to running it rich, so may want to take a look at your EGT and do a smog test to see if it may be burning too rich. Also, you can g5rtet a separate oil cooler, my 96F250 Super Duty has an individual oil and individual transmission cooler, so even if the engine starts running a bit hot, the oil will help cool it, and the oil will remain a bit cooler as it goes into the engine internals.

It's been quite popular here in Australia for say four decades but is fading from use now due to increased cost of LPG and increased fuel efficiency of modern cars, also Australia has focused mainly on giving away LPG/LNG to Japan and China for all these decades. Availability of the gas at outlets is dwindling. I learnt that automotive LPG is 50/50 propane/butane and the domestic lpg is pure propane. LNG refers to methane and i understand that in India it's methane thats the main gas but the tanks need to be double thickness and weight for the compressed methane . A gas mixture called hythane is also available being 20/80 % hydrogen to methane blend . Not having the lead additive could cause increased pitting of the valves and seats at the contact points , but if engine wasn't prone to overheating it then was less likely ( people don't consider that exhaust valves operate red hot in an engine and can get a bit tacky if too hot ) . What lead did was to deposit lead oxide coating on everything in exhaust region from valve seats n stems to the tailpipe, the deposit acted as a lubricant. I believe that you know you got quality stelliite valves if they ain't magnetic when you be checking a removed head . When i say gas , i don't refer to gasoline/petrol . If I i say gas , then i mean gas and not a liquid fuel . It's America that has this confusion.

Do you think this will work with hydrogen?
@mrmaxstorey10 ай бұрын
Hydrogen is an entirely different thing. The fuel isn't burned in internal combustion, it is turned into electricity and it powers electric motors

What is that adapter you pulled off the carb? I can't find anything like it online. All the kits I'm seeing want you to replace the entire carb with a propane only

That part is often called the fuel ring

I can't find any like that online. All the kits I'm seeing require a new carb. If anyone knows the details on this set up using your gasoline carb let me know.

It looks like a modified mixer placed directly on top of the factory carb.

About 300 miles

The biggest pro from my perspective is that propane can be stored for a very long time. So if you're at all concerned with potential supply issues, price hikes, or other world events it offers peace of mind.

Ok so im looking at a 88 dodge propane powered truck, are they any good? Last longer than gas? Hard to fix? Parts harder to find? Please help
@mrmaxstorey3 жыл бұрын
Well all the parts are basically the same except for the additional LPG hardware, so as far as that goes its no different than a gas powered truck. The LPG burns cleaner and has a higher octane than gas so yeah I think its a good thing, and if your truck is like mine you can switch it back and forth from gas and really get a mighty range for road tripping

Hey man I have a 2001vt600 shadow , that has 160psi compression in 4 cyl , carb is rebuilt and everything working but bike won’t fire even with starting fluid , the spark seems to be very weak , I’ve cleaned connections and battery is sitting arround 12.8 volts , do you think it’s the stator ?
@mrmaxstorey3 жыл бұрын
Good work so far. I'd throw in new plugs, look up the stock resistance for your coil and pickup coil and then check those. Usually cdi boxes fail by arresting spark altogether but occasionally they do get weak over time so it could be that as well
@elkevin58883 жыл бұрын
@@mrmaxstorey Ok will test for resistance , when i first found the bike in a barn , carbs were clogged tank was rusted, all that was adressed , spark plugs are wet , and even with starting fluid , i bought new plugs but they seem very dim , compression is fine , there is gas in the cylinders and wont start , so my guess is spark plug is to weak to fire ? does that make any sense?
@mrmaxstorey3 жыл бұрын
@@elkevin5888 yes it makes sense, any part of the ignition system can get weak and cause poor spark, I'd just be methodical and test everything and don't assume any part is good until confirmed

@@mrmaxstorey so battery was reading 11.6v decided to charge it overnight , hooked it up , sprayed some starter fluid and boom it was alive , one thing I noticed when I pulled out the carb to clean it is that the air mixture screw is missing , but the needle inside of it it’s still in there , I got no idea how that works , maybe it fell ? And the needle stayed in there ? , would it run like that ? The spark issue was battery related , but I got no idea what to do with that air mixture screw , just leave it in there and re assemble everything ,
@mrmaxstorey3 жыл бұрын
@@elkevin5888 Do you mean the choke or the air mixture screw? The air mixture screw should be a brass screw that comes up from the bottom of the carb, it is a needle with a screw head on it. The choke screw is made of plastic, it has a cable coming through it, and it attaches on the top of the carb to a separate needle. I see how that could get disconnected from the cable and stuck in the carb but its unlikely that you would break the mixture screw in two. Go on bikebandit and look up your bike's schematic for the carburetor and tell me what youre referring to

Can you run it off methane instead of propane?
@mrmaxstorey2 жыл бұрын
Im sure someone could figure that out
@jarrodheley7879 Жыл бұрын
You're thinking of CNG. It's generally considered not as good due to the much stronger/heavier tank requirement, as well as more loss of power and low range. Cheap to run though.
