@@TamanskayaDivision TTS relies heavily on the mematic elements of 40k for much of it's humor. Cato Sicarious and the Ultramarines in their first portrayal as literally incapable of not succeeding comes to mind, jabbing at the Ward writing that had been going on at the time. Admittedly with the flood of primaris releases GW hasn't helped with the image of marines not being invulnerable but it's just a minor example not even going over the non-canon elements like Magnus and Kitten.

The question should be " Are Space Marines too powerful ? " And yes,they are,they always were,even in lore they are shown to be way more powerful than Chaos Space Marines even though some of them have 10.000 years of experience,they are shown as the non plus ultra faction even though 95 % of battles that the Imperium engages in are fought by the Imperial Guard and Adeptus Mechanicus,they just show up to battlezones where there is already war for years,break the stalemate and get all the glory,Vrask is a good example of this. I really like the more humble Space Marines like Dante,but even he needed help and was almost defeated on Baal,i get that you want your hero to be powerful but if he turns into Saitama from One-punch Man where is the fun ? Thats not a chad move,thats cheesy and boring,but Marine players dont care,they just want the best and most OP characters like Draigo or now Calgar. Back in the Horus Heresy they actually had enough Marines to fight on their own but now they are nothing,1000 Marines should just be overrun in nearly all their battles,thats why the Imperial Guard is there,and if we talk about Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists.....they have them Outnumbered 100 to 1,its stated that the Iron Warriors have the same number of members or are even larger than during the Horus Heresy,so we are talking about 150.000 + Chaos Marines against 1000 Space Marines,but players still think they can beat them in a fight.....but the most important part for me personally is that Space Marines lose their humanity if you show them as this unbeatable hero,the lore moments i remember the most are the ones filled with human emotion,the little girl asking Grimaldus if he will save them from the monsters and him not having an answer,Pedro Kantor carrying the mother because she cant walk anymore,Dante chosing to fight so the Imperial Guard can withdraw,its stuff like that what makes a legend,nor Marneus Kent ripping of heads of stuff thats a dozen times bigger than himself,thats just Ward level writing.

The problem with characters this strong is that you stop seeing enemies as real threat. In WH40k humanity is supposed to be in this desperate fight against eldrich terrors (chaos or xenos), but it always fells like there is no struggle when the ultramarines are involved, no matter their foes. In the current setting the Great Rift is supposed to be a great danger for the Imperium but between the return of Gulliman, the primaris and the Ynnari, it does really feel actually better for the “good” guys that from before the plot advancement. I love the progression of the story but they should have boosted Chaos too. The success of Astertes is due exactly too this reason: you see the space marine killing everything without a drop of sweat, even the psykers go down relatively easy, then they are fucked up by a single warp entity. Space marine are not made to be invincible, but to a have a chance against something that is beyond comprehension. Calgar is just a stupid character, biologically he is a regular marine in terminator armour and not a primarch, if he is really on primarch level then we need a justification. I don’t get how GW can still make this kind of stories after getting rid of Ward. They should retcon half of the ultramarines stories. They turned down the Ynnari books because one single story did not sell enough, but they keep depicting space marines this way even if the fans hate it. Coherency at its top.

There has been struggle. These guys are supposed to be ageless yet they all die eventually even if it take centuries to millenia. You guys just complain to just complain now.
I don’t think the argument is “this is too much power for Calgar” it’s more “this is too much power the character” I mean if there’s no risk of him ever dying then every conflict he’s in has weak tension. It’s a problem found in a lot of space marine stories
@thecommentguy93803 жыл бұрын
TTS actually pointed the bullshitery of the Ultramarines. Calgar and his chapter won so much he started crying because he got bored of constantly winning.
@Convincing_Reality3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. For example, Terminators are intended to be a Chapter's elite warriors, clad in the finest armour (containing fragments of the Emperor's own) and armed with the most devasting weaponry. Yet in any Space Hulk, Genestealers open them up like a tin of meat with a ring pull. The insane lack of consistency throughout 40k lore is bad enough without Marvel further elevating it beyond the absurd.

@Convincing_Reality3 жыл бұрын
@@jacobleonard5138 True enough. The point I was poorly making is that going from the the best of the best to the Chapter Master shouldn't have such a massive power differential. Calgar is able to somehow individually accomplish what squads of Terminators can't, to the extent that his martial prowess seems to rival Guilliman's with no clear justification.
@Sandrock9999999993 жыл бұрын
@@Convincing_Reality that's not really an inconsistency though. Consider, for a moment, that a space hulk is a hyper-claustrophobic environment, where there are hundreds of nooks and crannies and hidden passages. Now here you are putting giant walking tanks in this environment and versing them against living weapons which are EXPLICITLY DESIGNED to fight in these kinds of environments. Of course you are going to see the emperor's elite getting ripped apart. Its like sending a million dollar main battle tank into a urban environment without infantry support. Don't be surprised when it gets popped by the insurgent who spent a couple hundred bucks on an rpg. Sending your elite into an environment where it is not the apex predator means that it's "elite" status doesn't mean as much. Sure, their skill will make sure they don't spontaneously combust, but you are still facing an enemy in their home turf... I would also point out that, despite this inequity, Terminators still tend to win out in when hulks appear. One could argue if there is an inconsistency here, its how INEFFECTIVE genestealers are against protag marines in lore. But is that really surprising, power armor being made of plot-anium and all ;p

I personally love Calgar as a big badass in the 40K universe, who doesn't love a character who just goes around killing everything

I don’t, he’s not the emperor or something, just look at his feats there ridiculous, like who would win calgar vs Ahriman?

Great vid @chaptermaster! I'm very much a beginner to the lore, but would still like to share. Yes, he appears to be massively powerful. Maybe too powerful. But if the empire is to have a chance, such heroes are needed. If the chaos eldars etc. are so powerful, there are so many threats from all sides, the Imperium must have some jacks in its sleeve to survive, even barely. He may be a badass but he can't be everywhere!
@Yawbus19763 жыл бұрын
Eventually, you stop making the hero look powerful and just start making their enemies look pathetic. The worst and laziest writers always make this mistake.

I have been thinking about something lately. We need a chaos space marine squad and chaos veteran marines. That way we can differentiate between veterans of the long war and recent renegade marines/new recruits to the traitor legions

The thing to remember with Calgar's feats is that they were all done as a firstborn. The Primaris upgrade (while not enough to change the statline in-game to S5, T5 in general) is still just that, an upgrade, a force multiplier, and that pays dividends in the lore (though we must remember that even Primaris fall short of the glory of Big E's perfect, well oiled, golden bois).

Legend says that Calgar stood alone guarding the gate from orks for an entire day and night. Except he wasnt alone, his bothers were with him and not just in spirit. But literally just behind him but too broken/dying/out of ammo, to help out. He even had some honor guard thea too but they mostly got killed, picked off through battle attrition. He also had a Sternguard combat squad with 2 heavy bolters in it as well. I'm sure thea was a chaplin in thea somewea too. The 6th company finally came and saved the day eventually. But only after one brave captain smashed his transport ship into the Warboss who would have killed Calgar otherwise. Only Calgar remembers their names and the name of the ship captain. Took on and killed a squiggoth too but, he had help from a giant gun they buried with one shot left to blow it's head clean off. He also lost to the swarmlord in their first encounter the swarm lord cut off some limbs and stabbed him real good. That the current chapter champion at the time had to intervene and do a last stand holding back the swarmlord so Calgar could be airlifted out. Calgar then took command of a space battle and won. Meanwhile, Cassius was getting his face melted off by a rampaging carnifex spewing bio acid into his transport is still alive too.

I think Dante still has it in him to win; psychologically though, I think he wants to die though. Also, off topic but seeing this art in the comics makes me wish they would drop an Adventures in the Warp, a Corvus Corax story. I've read the whole comic and I have a couple of answers... How he got up there on the Lord of Skulls: He drops down on to it from a high position. How did he beat it? Well there is a sh*t tonne of Ultramarines also fighting it. Imagine the final animation of a HQ kill in Dawn of War... It's nuts but it's nowhere near as crazy as Kharn beating up a Warhound Titan...
