Well said! I think making blanket statements of "It's sinful and that's just the way it is!" (which i've heard before) is hard to back up scripturally. I think it's a lot more nuanced than that. I think theoretically masturbation free from lust could very well be not sinful. Personally, I have found that it is addictive, and also tends to corrupt my mind and how I view people around me. It tends to ignite a lustful fire, not quench one. Even if it's not sinful, I think we should all strive to abstain from sexual activities until we're within the scenario that God designed sex for.

"I think theoretically masturbation free from lust could very well be not sinful." Neither lust nor masturbation are sins. "Personally, I have found that it is addictive," Not medically speaking, every tested example is a placebo. "and also tends to corrupt my mind and how I view people around me." How so? " It tends to ignite a lustful fire, not quench one." No, that's just being a person. Lust is a morally neutral human desire, like thirst or hunger. You might be more hungry after eating but you're not going to stop being hungry if you never eat. Some desires and needs are just recurring. "Even if it's not sinful, I think we should all strive to abstain from sexual activities until we're within the scenario that God designed sex for." There is not such thing, or at least not in any clearly delineated way. Contrary to popular conception, the Bible never prohibits pre-marital sex or establishes a zone for acceptable sexuality.
@brandonloschiavo86513 жыл бұрын
Dr. Sean, I will have to disagree with your conclusion on this one. The scriptures are clear on sexual boundaries in both the OT & NT, yet never once is the issue of masturbation brought up and deemed sinful. I lead middle school boys in our youth ministry and this topic comes up from time to time. I advise them on what scripture says - lust is sinful (as you mentioned) and so is any sexual activity (mental or physical) involving someone other than an opposite sex spouse. I believe calling masturbation a sin is adding to the scripture. Now, you bring up a good point about addictive behavior - however this principle should apply to many things a believer is at risk of being enslaved to, from eating sugary food, watching TV, time on social media, etc - yet none of these things are sinful in and of themselves. I would add that non-lustful masturbation would fall in this camp as well. I absolutely agree that the design and intention of sexual desire was to be given to a spouse, but God has, I believe, permitted non-ideal things as a result of the reality of His ideal, vs our reality in a fallen world. For example, many Christians believe that eating meat is a result of the fall, yet God permits it. Hopefully that makes sense. Regardless, God bless you bro!!! Thanks for all you do!
@PC-vg8vn3 жыл бұрын
One could argue being 'enslaved' to anything is sinful. I think we evangelicals think of sin as simply breaking a law, or 'doing the wrong thing', when it's probably more akin to a force, coercing us into going against God. I would also question if there really is such a thing as 'non-lustful' masturbation. But the question remains - is a single Christian, whether straight or gay, expected not only to be celibate, ie no sex with another, but also no sexual functioning at all? It's very easy for those who are married to pronounce 'sin' on others.

I think Jesus' intent with discussing adultery in the Sermon is more metaphorical and to show people that none of them are perfect and they should be careful how they judge others. In a sense he's saying that since everyone commits mental adultery, that we shouldn't judge others too harshly who commit actual, physical adultery. His intent is to increase empathy among the audience, not to instill more guilt with even stricter rules than before. I've always taken this to mean Jesus is speaking to married men. I've always read that passage as "whoever looks on 'another' woman ...", meaning a married man who is engaging in sexual fantasy with someone other than their wife. Applying this thought process to single men would be rather strange; saying that lustful inclinations of a single man is wrong, that's rather strange. It's how the human species procreates. Also, the word "adultery" itself implies that at least one partner is married. Two unmarried people having sex is fornication, and someone that fornicates freely and frequently is promiscuous, but adultery is a word reserved for married people. I don't think a single man should be feeling guilty about acting out on their sex drive. I get a chuckle out of the verses that follow. Cut this body part off. Cut that body part off. Blah blah blah. I think I've gained enough wisdom in this world to say when it comes to acting out sexually, cuttin' off body parts ain't gonna solve the problem here. If I were addicted to pornography and lost my eye sight, no problem, I could still have plenty of sexual fantasy without the visual stimulation of porn. Cut off my hands and I'm pretty sure I could find a way to self stimulate without benefit of manual manipulation. Even removing my genitalia wouldn't do it - I could still engage in sexual fantasy even devoid of carnal equipment. It's all in the mind, which I think is Jesus' ultimate point here, and I don't think he's suggesting that we all self-lobotomize.

I think a lot of people, myself included misinterpreted what Jesus was trying to drive home in the sermen on the mount. I don't think his point was "Cut off your arm and you can save yourself". I think there was a bit of sarcasm there. Jesus was teaching that he wasn't there to do away with the law but to fulfil it. He then goes on to point out that its not good enough to just fulfil the law. Cause anyone can attempt to do that. Fulfilling the law doesn't make you good. Loving your neighbors and your enemies and those you don't even know makes you the salt of the earth, the light of the world. He then goes onto to say you can't serve to masters.... And I think what he means is you can't both serve yourself and God. He goes on to point out how some pray in public and some give in public again serving themselves by doing it. I think what he is saying is that the law can't make you good. The law can't save you. And trying to save yourself leads you down the wrong path. A Godly life is about serving others and by doing that we serve God's purpose for us. You have to think about everything that is said there. Even in the case where Jesus says, "It is harder for a rich man to enter heaven than a camel through the eye of the needle". That man had come boasting saying he had kept all the laws. But Jesus pointed out that he wasn't perfect because he couldn't give up his wealth. He was attached to his wealth. Come back to the sermen on the mount and you see again that a person will lose their purpose by worrying about money matters. Don't worry about tomorrow he says.... How does all this apply to masterbation... I'd say you have to think about who might be hurt by it. Are you loving others... or are you hurthing them.
@johns67043 жыл бұрын
Keven I'd also add that of course you are 100% correct that he was talking to married men. Cause men and women basically got married as soon as they hit puberty back in those days. That is why all the talk is about adultery. Having to abstain from sex through years of being unmarried wasn't really a thing at all back then. So he was saying, "Hey its not good enough just to fulfill the letter of the law and not sleep with another married women. He was saying, to lover your neighbor and your wife, you have to respect them by not even entertaining the thought of adultery. I really believe Jesus was saying we have to do more than just try to save ourselves by keeping the laws but we have to actively love one another.

Sometimes I get an erection randomly with absolutely no sexual thoughts at all. when you practice semen retention it happens, no way around it. There are times my erection can last a long time and like I said with absolutely no sexual thoughts towards another human being, many times it happens when nobody is around me. It’s difficult to not let my body release when I have gone months without releasing semen and those erections can come up randomly when I’m at work or in public and I can’t just find a chair and sit down for 15 min because they can last a long time so it can be an embarrassing situation. Sometimes I need to go into the restroom and release especially if it’s been months. When it happens I don’t think sexual thoughts, I specifically focus on the release and just let my body do it’s thing…… many times when the subject of relieving yourself comes up many people automatically think porn or lust but for many of us it has nothing to do with either or.

English Bibles translate that passage wrong. It does not say "with lustful intent", it says "in order to covet". That is a reference to the tenth commandment. Not lust is required in order to covet. Masturbation gives the same physical benefits as sexual intercourse. This is particularly important for men as they are less likely to contract prostate cancer the more ejaculations they have. God has given us organs that have no other purpose than to give us lustful pleasure. And they are placed right where our hands can conveniently reach them. The only reason there is even a debate on this is because of a bad translation of Matthew 5:27-28. Leviticus 15:16 contains a possible reference to masturbation. Some take it to be a refer to nocturnal emission, but the original Hebrew doesn't specify. Another verse in Deuteronomy does specify a nocturnal emission but the verse in Leviticus doesn't; the Hebrew term can include both masturbation and nocturnal emission. Bravo to you Sean for even discussing the subject. If it is a sin, then I’ve been sinning in this way since my preteen years. For me it relieves stress and tension and even at my age it still feels so good, though at my age, it’s like having the dry heaves if you know what I mean. The Bible is true when it says there is pleasure in sin for a season. I feel that every human being in this world with the exception of Christ and maybe a few nuns and priests - Lol, has masturbated at least once in their lives. Being born with a sinful nature, we are bound to experience it and because our minds as well as our wills are infected by sin, it will happen. Is it the same as committing adultery? That I’m not so sure about. Does it occur in our heart and eyes? Yes of course it does. So after all I’ve talked about here, I admit to sinning. Also, and most importantly, I am a believer and follower in Christ. Could it become a form of idolatry? Yes absolutely. Blessings to you Sean.

It sounds like you have come to terms with the fact that you are slave to this sin. You cannot be a slave to sin and a servant of Christ - one cannot have two masters. I would take a long hard look at myself in the mirror and ask whether I am actually a follower of Christ, if I were you. One of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is self-control - it sounds like you have completely given up wrestling with sin and are comfortably living in fornication.

It’s not so much about what other people do, but more about the morality and values God is asking us to obey as His creation. The friction that arises between society and Christianity is when society demands Christianity to be in agreement with something it deems acceptable though it contradicts biblical principles. Given that we are a country founded on Judeo-Christian values, it makes sense that as things begin to fall away from those values, many who still live according to them would want to conserve them, hence the term “conservative.” Also, to assume what other people do, does not bother progressives or secularists, is a fallacy. Mere words, terms, flags, and the like are considered offensive and very bothersome. By contrast, abortion is arguably murder, to which those who hold it as such are rightfully bothered. Secularists who don’t hold the same moral values are going to find issues with Christianity and Vis-à-vis. They are at odds. It is what it is.

If you have looked very carefully at the bible, implications arise. one thing to know about Gods moral system is that if something is wrong, it's because it will "bother". there isn't a single useless law in the bible. (another reason why masturbation isn't a sin) even the food restrictions in the old testament were relevant for there time because there were foods that were harmful at the time, but are safe now. masturbation is obviously like anything else, if done wrong, can be wrong.

God could have easily made our bodies in a way that it takes two people to create an orgasm but He didn't. I feel bad for those who are single or divorced thinking they cannot pleasure themselves. Looking back in history we've gone from couples getting married in their early teens, and God giving David additional wives (2 Sam. 12:8) to teaching single Christians that self-pleasure is a sin. And now we are encouraging our youth not to get married until at least 24-28 and also telling them it's a sin to masturbate.... give me a break! God designed us so we can enjoy sexual pleasure whether single or married, young or old. Hormones and the build up of semen is a reality, are you telling me a man who chooses singleness like Paul endorsed is supposed to go his/her whole life without masturbation? That's not reality. The awareness of self pleasure happens at an age prior to even knowing what sex is for most in pre-adolescence. Just like money, alcohol, sex within marriage, and other aspects of life there are ways to abuse or misuse a gift which comes from above. Folks we are navigating life in a fallen world, ideally it would be nice to get married at 15 and not have other temptations but that's not the world we live in. Ideally we shouldn't eat anything unhealthy (like sugar) and should only be preaching the gospel and not watching TV right? We certainly don't talk about gluttony these days which is mentioned in the Bible unlike masturbation. The amount of shame and guilt this topic puts on people is so destructive. As Christians we can take things to extremes so easily, its unfortunate we don't teach a healthier view on masturbation that obviously does not include porn or lust.

Sean, I'm really enjoying your other stuff but with this, I really encourage you to look a LOT deeper. I can see that you are very sincere but you have not researched the topic in any sort of depth. You are also young and married and, I presume, happily so. You are not living out this stuff. I'm a 58 year old red-blooded male who has never been married. I'm in a wonderful relationship today and I think this is it (at last). I have been through the mill with this stuff. Can you imagine? I would not try to advise you on marriage issues. I've been single all my life, but I am an expert on singleness. I have lived this out for a lifetime. So, I suggest don't try to advise singles on this stuff until you have really dug deep. What you are saying is pure theory. And a scanty amount of theory at that. Leviticus 15 addresses masturbation directly. Start there. You are allowed to release yourself. It's not talking about nocturnal emissions. That is addressed directly in Deuteronomy 23. The idea that Hebrew boys would be expected to lie there with a hard-on and wait for a nocturnal emission is just silly. It can only mean 1 thing. Why everyone ignores this passage is baffling to me. In addition, medically, men need to release semen on a regular basis. Especially the young guys. The whole semen-retention movement today only existed in a few cultures in history. It was not the general norm. So, I am saying, as the expert (who was also in youth ministry for many years and later ran singles groups and is very well read): This is unrealistic. God bless. I love your ministry and your father's work was outstanding.

Lust is a morally neutral impulse. Masturbation is not sex, treating masturbation as if it's just a form of sex is simply incorrect. Scripture never said that you have a custom-made partner. Scripture never said that erotic pleasure is should be limited to a relationship(let alone a marriage) and we know for a fact that that is not the case. Masturbation is not addictive, "masturbation addiction" is a placebo effect. This is just more puritanical nonsense, there's no real substance here.

@Grokford Not in English no. But the greek word is. The gospels were in greek not English how bout u do a word study On the word translated lust. It is the same word as covet. I don't expect you to believe me. I don't want you to simply trust. Besides how could you when there is 1800 years between the vulgate and now. But you could be a berean and check for yourself. The origional language is my witness. What's yours church tradition. You can choose who you trust man and there trads or the actual origional language. The simple fact is the idea of sexual desire being condemned is actually part of a old heresy it's called gnostism Like i said. Check the scriptures. In there origional language. The word for the tenth command is the same greek word. And frankly the word for woman in that verse is also the same word for wife. It's actually translated wife more often But whatever u can choose to trust the scriptures. Or you can choose to trust man kinds tradition.

@@r.a.panimefan2109 "Not in English no. But the greek word is. " That's not really how semantic range works. Just because a word in one language has elements of two separate words in another, that doesn't mean that it contains all of the meaning of all related terms. "The gospels were in greek not English how bout u do a word study" I have a degree in the Bible, and in linguistics and I've spent the past decade in foreign language education and translation. Safe to say that I've done a few word studies. "On the word translated lust. It is the same word as covet." But it's not. Meanings can overlap in single terms, you can not expand a word out to include all possible meanings while retaining the original. "Burning" is an example. "Burning" can mean that something is being consumed by flame and turned into ash, it can mean that there is some sort of pain, which can be subdivided into itching, stinging, or generalized pain. It can also describe different physical occurrences it, it could be fire, it could be dissolution via acid, it could be based on friction. It can also refer to any strong emotion, burning hatred, extreme infatuation, being goal-oriented. Burning can also just mean generally hot. But you can't just take one instance of the word burning, free from context and decide that it means that the person is super-passionate and suffering from acid damage. That's not how language works. "I don't expect you to believe me. I don't want you to simply trust." Well, that's not going to happen I'm afraid, I do have a modicum of expertise here so I'm going to need some hard evidence. Though you could be forgiven for not having understood this, it's not a simple topic for the average person to understand. "Besides how could you when there is 1800 years between the vulgate and now." Because distinct concepts don't disappear with time. One language might only have one word to describe coasts, and beaches but that doesn't mean that the concepts aren't different. "What's yours church tradition." That's a tricky question, I would say Baptist-Catholic. But I was trained by people from several denominational backgrounds including Dutch Reformed and Anglicans. "You can choose who you trust man and there trads or the actual origional language." I choose the original text obviously, my point is that you're applying English logic to a Greek term. "Check the scriptures. In there origional language. The word for the tenth command is the same greek word." Well the ten commandments are in Hebrew, not Greek, so they can't be the same word. But really the issue here is that you're importing the connotations of modern English words into your understanding of the Greek.
@r.a.panimefan210927 күн бұрын
@Grokford the problem is with ur interpretation is that historically the jews didn't have that concept outside essence groups and it was in the gnostic subcultures. The fact is if a word has a meaning in the greek just becuase a bible teacher says it means something it may not. Also logic dictates it doesn't mean sexual desire. Namely god made our hormones he wouldn't then add to scripture during o.t. times. Logically it's ridiculous

I have been masturbating for 40 years now. Satan condemns me for doing it and the feeling of guilt also affects me at least for the most part of my years. However a few years ago, I had a dream in which I saw demons accusing me of masturbation before the courts of heaven where God was. I saw God spoke to the demons to leave me alone and that I was his man. After I got up from that dream, I felt I was given the freedom to masturbate (without porn and lust of course!) and each time I did, I was free of guilt and condemnation even up to this time.

What the bible say's about masturbation is in Lev.15:16-24, that also deals with the single man and single woman that's had sex and what to do if the emission get's on either of them, WASH with WATER and be clean after a certain amount of time, it's no different from any other law that has to do with any liquid form leaving a man's body, pee, poop ( diarrhea ), a runny nose, anything that could have germs, bacteria or viruses that can be contacted by someone else, masturbation is only a modern day word for loving one's self or self love, it's nothing new, it's been going on ever since man found out there was pleasure in doing it, there's a right way and a wrong way in doing it since it involves the mind and what your thinking about or desiring when you do it, if your desiring another man's wife or woman, your sinning in your heart, although it's not something God will judge you for but it is something if you don't control that could cause you to sin, there's really no excuse to be desiring another man's wife or woman when there's so many single women out there that would love nothing more than to have you desire her, no one is going to be judged based on their thoughts, period, only on the thoughts they act on, period, however on that day when God reveals the innermost thoughts of men's heart, beware, at that time NO ONE will be able to stand, in this respect we are ALL sinners, but not acting on it will get you praised on that day, a person strong in the faith can see anything, he knows what he see's will never cause him to sin, a person weak in the faith should not even be watching tv or going to the beach or anywhere beautiful women go, that person is apt to sin and once he does, separation from God occurs, what the eye's can see is not the sin, it's what the eye's can see that is the CAUSE of the sin, if your eye will CAUSE you to sin, pluck it out, if your hand will CAUSE you to sin, cut it off, the sins of the flesh are manifested, they appear, the sins in the heart or the mind do NOT appear, the sins of the heart and mind are only where they originate from, there is good and evil in everyone, if you don't see it in reality, you will in your mind before it appears before others, the spiritual world is in the mind, if your mindful of the evil or see it when it's coming, you will never do it, that's walking in the spirit, being mindful or aware of what you see in your mind is sin, if seeing a naked woman will cause you to sin then by all means don't look at one, if going to the beach and seeing women in their bathing suits will cause you to sin, then don't go to the beach, heck for that matter if just working around one will cause you to sin, move to the mountains, if you don't know what sin is, read 1 Jn 3:4, it's breaking God's Law, if you don't know God's Law, READ ABOUT IT, ALL the forbidden sexual sins are in it, the law and the prophets, whatever is beyond what is written in it is coming from one's heart and mind, and know this, the heart of man is very deceiving, make them PROVE to you that masturbation hurts your body, I say body because if you believe it hurts your relationship with God, that would be mental, if it's hurting you mentally then I would say you got a MENTAL problem that needs to be looked into by someone experienced enough to deal with it, the bible say, What man has ever hated his own body but rather cherished and loved it, that author should be living in our times, there are MANY in our times that hate their own bodies

@@Grokford lol really, a runny nose would be unclean, poop and pee unclean, as a matter of fact there are many other issues of uncleanness, all of which were prescribed what to do to become clean again, it's only a cleanliness law and their way to be clean after ANY emission, a woman on her period was unclean, was she sinning by having her period? the whole point had to do with contact with blood, why? because blood carried diseases, the same with any fluid leaving a man's body that could carry germs or bacteria that could be passed on to another through contact, common sense tells most people this if their parents didn't teach it to them, if a man has an emission and believe me he will, the solution was to wash in water and be clean after a set amount of time, the set amount of time had to do with air drying, water and air kills bacteria and germs, that's why we wash our hands after going to the bathroom, to keep from spreading germs that could potentially infect some one else, you have a problem I see with masturbating
