I get that it was for the sake of a twist for the audience, but it was very wrong of Rachel to not tell Phoebe the truth right here and let her believe Monica was pregnant. The fact that the lie reached Chandler could’ve been an absolute disaster. I don’t really see why Rachel couldn’t have been honest with Phoebe right here; it would’ve prevented a lot of awkwardness.

Agree. I mean, we all know Friends was the expert on the whole miscommunication schtick, but Rachel not telling Phoebe lead to Phoebe believing a lie, which then led to Chandler overhearing said lie and freaking out, and so on.

But you could also argue that Rachel's lie saved Chandler from running. Because, it was his thought of monica having a baby and him finding the baby clothes that persuaded to not be scared of the marriage and staying.
