This is excellent. I didn't have a mustang, but I bought a range colt from an auction years ago (basically feral and you just run them into a trailer similar to the Mustangs). I didn't have a lot of the knowledge back then, but I spent about 3 months just sitting in a chair with that colt. I thought he'd never get used to me, but then he did, and I could do just about anything with him then. He even forgave the de-lousing and deworming...haha. I got him to a point where I got on him and did walk/trot but a change in my personal life made me have to sell him. That's when I learned that "I" could do anything with him...but no one else could!

What a gorgeous, sensitive mare. This was an exceptionally educative video…being able to watch Nate take her thru the basic handling list, watching Marley’s read/response, and hearing your observation/background info. Proof that ‘two heads are better than one’! Thank you both. GREAT video. I’ll check out Nate’s channel. You both have very calm, respectful, confident style. So nice to see.

Oh boy! I have been super quiet with my mare but finding that delicate balance of asking her to think through the pressure before she freaks out remains somewhat elusive. This video gives me a lot of ideas. Nate's work with her is tremendous and having the two of you discussing techniques and strategies to help her gain confidence and trust is absolutely golden. Brilliant all te way around!!

So many people think they know it all, but we can all learn and it's always good to recognise a gap in experience and seek advice. I'm glad you did - we didn't want a bronco show! Interesting to see Nate speeding things up and increasing pressure when you have been taking it slow and careful. They do need to learn not to be too reactive to any little miss-move we may make - it's easy to trip over a bucket or something or just be in a bit more of a hurry and forget to be so careful and they need to be able to handle that! It's made me think about Remmy with Jake at Pear Tree ranch - he worked wonders, but said she will never be a "normal" horse and will always need extra care with handling. I wonder if she would benefit from a bit of Nate style speeded up pressure. I hope she's going on well and often think of her and wonder how she might handle every day horsey activities like going to a trail ride meet up or something. Loving watching Marley, she's a beauty and you've got a great mare.

I’m glad to see someone come in and be mindful of what they are doing and how accepting she is. Instead of coming in going rawhide and flooding them into flight or fight and ruining the progress. Imagine a few months ago she was wild, only knew her herd and now she is accepting a saddle in the kill zone….horses are magnificent creatures and I love them all ❤️🐴

This is great, Nate is awesome!! Being humble and asking for help from fellow trainers is what makes you an even better horseman. The Twin Peaks mare I am currently training for a friend reminds me so much of Marley. She soft, sensitive, smart, and tries very hard. She's OK with all the tools, but the human touch is what makes her nervous. Was very face shy at first, "patting" her was a huge no no, sometimes still is. Esp. under the chest area she would strike out at that. Lots of "50 first dates" with her at first. Have had her since June and she's coming along really well; but still not the most cuddly horse, and definitely has some stranger danger still. Love seeing your progress with Marley. And cant wait to see you at Equine Affaire next week!

I've not watched all her patreon videos yet but this one defaulted after the go fast one so I started to watch. I've never watched Nate at work before but so interesting to see a wild mustang act differently with different people as I know enough about your training that you'll have got her to a good enough stage if you felt she was getting ready for first ride. So interesting when others find holes and reflecting it is not always about the trainer leaving holes as such, but sometimes the horse can just experience something different when faced with someone new. Great video with two great minds and styles helping this girl to being her best self

Very easy, just put my self in her stead and I would be the same. You are very generous to leave this space to a new person for Marly! Kudos to you! She's absolutely lovely and I'm glad you're sharing her progress but I have to say this was really hard to watch. You mention a few times about moving quickly around her and it seems she's trying to tell you she isn't ready yet for all those brisk movements. I think I counted maybe 4 steps where she disengaged her hindquarters but otherwise she was moving sharply in short jerky steps, keeping her legs under her so she could bolt if she had to. When someone asks her gently to disengage, can she do it calmly and in a relaxed way? A martial arts instructor used to say: first you do it slowly, then you do it slowly and well, then you do it fast, then you do it fast and well. I might be completely off here and you might intend to have a horse who always moves immediately and fast, so that's the way she's going to be treated. I would not in a million years get on a horse that was at her level of relaxation because I am such a rubbish rider, so my standards are not going to match yours and my opinion is of limited value. Please share more about Marley's progress. She's delightful to watch, although her ears weren't as expressive this time as they've been in the past and that part was really delightful.
@4Strides
@4Strides 2 ай бұрын
I’m sure Ryan has her doing things slowly and well, but Nate stepped it up to doing it fast. The increase in speed is an increase in pressure that Marley needs to increase her tolerance for, which will lead to relaxation and her being able to do it fast and well.

I spent lots of time with mustangs in a holding facility waiting to be adopted and the mustangs were terrified of the man that came in riding a horse. I could tell every time it was going to happen because they would all panic and move as far away as possible in their pens to try and get away from him. It didn’t matter how close he was or wasn’t. One time I was there and the guy came into one of the pens on horse back to move them around and the mustangs would slam into the panels. One broken his leg and had to be put down. I don’t know if this happens all the time. I just wanted to mention this in regard to the question you asked if it bothers them seeing someone riding on another horse’s back. It definitely can.
