Having lived in NYC for over a decade and now living in a Texas small city I can 100% confirm yes nyc is overrated. The whole idea of nyc being this amazing place is just propaganda, is not terrible but is also not amazing. It’s alright 😅 if you’re willing to put up with all the downsides and there’s a lot of them.

Yeah there’s a lot of cons but many people (including myself at least for a few years) are willing to look past it 😅

I lived in NYC with my mom and sister for 6 months. They are still there but I moved to South Korea. The cons just don’t outweigh the pros unfortunately. It’s extremely unsafe, dirty, and expensive. Yes there are fun things to do and the food is bomb ❤️‍🔥. But constantly looking over my shoulder, almost stepping on dog shit in fancy parts of the city, smelling human pee on the subway, and constantly seeing people get attacked on the news (or meeting people who were/ almost were). It’s not worth it. But if you are heellllllaaaaaaaaaaa rich and can also have your own car and good security where you live then go for it!

I’m born and raised here and i love my city, the small apartment thing is a myth that exists only in Manhattan. And people only want to live in Manhattan for the vibes and their videos. Cause we have spacious living spots outside of there. And crime for people of color is just not true at all, there’s crime everywhere, again I think these are only true for midtown. Only con is people moving here for vibes then complaining.

I agree that there’s tons of living options outside of Manhattan! Most people who find disappointment in moving here are looking for a very specific experience that they see on YT on Tiktok haha

The only thing I envy as a southerner is transit. But transit is getting better and better each and every day here in the South. NY is a place to like to visit for me but never to live.

Jersey City and Hoboken honestly might better places to live while still getting the NYC experience since its so close and those cities are as expensive/croweded per say hahaha

I’ve lived in nyc about 5 years. And yes definitely overrated. I’m originally from Phoenix. Definitely relate to the remark about going to target/groceries. You can only get what you can carry and those bags get heavy walking home… as opposed to putting as much as you want in the cart and taking cart to the car and putting it in the trunk… and especially if it’s cold, then rather than walking home in the cold with heavy bags as opposed to having them in the drunk and driving in a warm car… and then going through the drive through for coffee or food. I cannot believe how early coffee shops close here in nyc, and the lack of cool coffee shops. I thought it was the city that never sleeps and like the Coffee capital of the world. And even just food. There’s lots of table service fancy places. But as far as places to just go by myself and grab something… fast food, honestly not much. I feel like Phoenix has way more. Phoenix has some of the most beautiful sunsets of I’ve ever and you see it nearly everyday. Of course here the buildings block the view. And the driving is definitely better than the subway. Literally the other day I walk in the subway and there throw up there. The list goes in.

Absolutely, take the New Yorker who fancies themselves as savvy and put him somewhere else where their dollar goes further and see if they make it. Usually they do about as well elsewhere as they were doing in New York but they can save a little or spend a little more depending on their inclination. The old banal platitudes about New York being special don't really hold up the same in the internet age and money culture of current. New York is absolutely overrated. It's coasting on a reputation from decades ago.

I like the fact that you pointed out that some people move to NYC to start over and start a new chapter, run from there problems. I am example of this I lived here for 12 years moved to Florida for 7 years and I came back to NYC to start over. A year into NYC, and I'm kinda disappointed. Everything you pointed out is spot on.

NYC is very overrated, NY hasn't been good since the mid 00s. Social Media and quarantine really took the spark out of this city.

The funniest NYC quote is “you don’t need a car”. Sure you don’t but try to go shopping without one if you have a family. How are you going to ever take. Trip anywhere? Take your family on an extended Uber ride? Lol. Just the thought of returning to NY makes me laugh.

So true. I go the store and can only buy what I can carry and then have to carry it back and it gets heavy. As opposed to filling up a cart having taking to the car and putting in the truck… even drinking Starbucks while a while I shop and having a cup holder in the cart… plus of course it’s much nicer than the subway.

I lived in New York and in London and I think London makes New York seem like a 3rd world country. The amount of crime and homelessness on the streets in New York is terrible. While in london I have never felt threatened or in danger walking on the streets while in New York I didn’t feel safe all the time. Also the lack of parks and just concrete everywhere is a joke

Walking is not unique to NY in the US. Philly, SD, SF, NO, Miami, Chicago among others, are walk friendly. NYC doesn’t have. Stranglehold on “walkability”.

One aspect that is never discussed about New York City that is increasingly becoming relevant is the degree to which single women are competing wages down. I lived in New York City for 20 years and I’m finding that I’m getting job offers that I was getting 15 years ago. I attribute this to women being willing to spend 100% of their income Because they don’t need to have savings in order to get married where is a guy does. Also, if you give a child who gets a three dollar allowance a raise of two dollars it’s gonna feel like a big deal to them but it’s still not a lot of money. New York has become unlivable because women are competing wages down.
what i spend in a week as an unemployed 30-year-old in NYC 😬
