How can one make mistakes in a place where there is no mistakes? There's no "correct" way to use Notion. That's the beauty of it, you can use it in whatever way you want. Ivan Zhao even said, he thinks we are gradually leaving behind the idea that you need to "organize" with the way AI is being used. Also, you said your point wasn't to sell a course, but you made a video talking about how Notion is a waste of time, unless people use it the way you do. Odd

Good question. Definitely lots of places to make mistakes. For example building a database with 10-15 properties when it could’ve been better built using a few databases that are related instead. But depending on your Notion knowledge and experience, I’d understand how you could have that perspective. Cheers

“I’ve had to build my own custom templates because I couldn’t find the consultant that was meeting my needs.” I feel like this supports your point about the IKEA effect, cus here you’re customizing notion to your specific needs. I dont think there’s one right way to use it, but there’s certainly a lot of less productive ways to use notion, and it’s easy to get lost in the customizable little widgets and integrations. But at the end of the day it’s a space that reflects how you organize your thoughts and thus your work. Then it’s about having enough self awareness to stop yourself from getting carried away and creating more work for your self. Been using notion for almost two years and the only reason I haven’t switched to another app is because of its simplicity. It’s sort of a blank canvas

Yes exactly, IKEA effect is definitely into play here, and also adds to the fun of the experience. That's awesome man, I made a video on our company templates last week. Let me know what you think!

imo though, there is no real right way to use notion, just like there's no right way to play video games like minecraft. Just like minecraft is a sandbox game that allows you to play it however you want, whether it's speedrunning or taking it slow and building amazing things along the way, Notion gives you the power to use it as a very simple notes app for keeping your shopping lists or for managing businesses, as you said. Personally, I've found it to be quite simple, easy to use, and straightforward and I'm getting all the value I need out of it for appropriately managing school, a second brain, keeping track of my other projects and due dates, without having to see that many tutorials. I personally feel like there's no real reason to treat it so seriously and learn all the fundamentals first when you can just wing it and figure it out along the way. Slightly overkill (at least, imo). For the average person, and small to more or less medium sized businesses, there's very little friction in getting started by creating a blank page and adding all the things you need later on and figuring stuff out. For large businesses that need an excellent organization and management system, well they'll need something much more than Notion anyway.

Great insights man! What you're mentioning is exactly how I felt before I had to onboard our company and close to a hundred people onto Notion. You're speaking from your personal experience and I'm talking about having trained all sorts of people! A handful even quit Notion before they started working with me and then commented on how they weren't using Notion even nearly close to it's potential before as they got more training done! So definitely would've understood the capabilities of the app better if they had gone through some good training. Ofcourse you'll continue to learn along the way, but gotta know best practices such as how to avoid creepers in minecraft ;)

I've tried to get into Notion several times including watching their own tutorials etc, but I think it really is just the bandwagon effect. When I actually look at what my use-case would be, I don't think I have any reason to use it that isn't already covered by Office, calenders and notebooks.
