Congrats on graduating. EQ is has so many minor details that get overlooked and nuances you don't see in modern games. It makes me happy to see someone as young as yourself enjoying the game. Cheers!

I was playing EverQuest when 9/11 happened. I joined the ARMY as a scout because of that, and everyone was completely shocked that I already knew how to do land navigation. It was literally FROM PLAYING EVERQUEST. Having to use sense heading / compass / read grid coordinates etc. There was no maps, but even if there was, you couldn't tab out anyways. I'm hoping one day we get another MMO that has this level of ridiculousness to it. I remember when being able to lead someone from Rivervale to Freeport was a real skill that most players didn't have.

I've been playing Pantheon rise of the fallen in alpha recently, it has some fundamental old school eq elements to it. No map, interesting navigating via landmarks and intensely social! It's in a seasons phase atm, where u can play a week each season, lots of fun

I recently got into playing everquest again a month or two ago on the p99 green server and im up to lvl 28 playing a wizard. This is my first time playing everquest again in like 20 years. I think the reason why modern gaming isn't as good is because large corporations are slowly sucking the very soul out of games in the name of making as much money as possible.

I think what people might consider negative qualities are actually what makes EQ special. (1) It makes you feel lost (2) It makes you feel in danger Those two qualities just naturally highten how much attention you pay to the game and increase your immersion. The issue is though that many new gamers or casual gamers are turned off by that, especially in an online game. So if an MMO wants high numbers, it has to do away with that and make things easy and completely soloable. You can definitely solo EQ, but it's not easy in the slightest if you are new to the game. That said, all the pre-WoW MMOs were special. I also have fond memories of UO, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, EQ2 even (technically pre-WoW by about 3 weeks).

Eq was kinda magical. The core difficulty made the game dangerous and heart pounding. That experience has not been duplicated in any other mmo. The class design was near perfect I think. Every class had amazing strengths and debilitating weaknesses which made you want to group and play your role cause you wanted to make the difference in your group. So much can be said about EQ. Hope Ashes of creation is at least half the game EQ was.

older games i find i can sit down and enjoy the game itself the environments characters even the soundtracks of some old games are very memorable etc whereas modern titles its like im being forced to play the game in a certain way being pushed towards certain objectives the world is not made as exciting as the objective and oh god dailies can go to hell and Fomo "play for this event or you'll never get this thing!!". theres less freedom involved. there is also the fact that game companies are a business in the end they do have to make money just how some of them do so is a bit unsavory. Apart from a few indie titles i have not bought/played/enjoyed many new releases and my pc is full of old games and its funny some stuff from the 90s still have huge followings and modding communities bringing them forward in time its really impressive

Some old design is better, most isn't. That's really the only objective answer to this question i feel. The old design centered around fostering a social atmosphere and for lack of a better term, class fantasy/identity tends to be the times when old design was better. I remember my experiences in playing a game called Dark Ages which was excellent at fostering a social atmosphere within the game with a variety of systems it had to achieve that. And Vanilla WoW was great at making you fall into the fantasy of playing your class with the class quests and certain mechanics each class had unique to them that made sense. A lot of that has been stripped away in modern mmo's. But there's also a lot of design systems that amounted to little other than time wasters or contributed to a great amount of spam that's better left in the past.

its not that modern games dont do things better. They clearly do it's that they ont put immersion, storytelling, gameplay first. They instead think okay we need a _____ protaganist. We need to make sure we are representing group ________ and _______, and of course _______. And let's make sure to make it pretty easy so everyone can enjoy it.
@Nobleshield7 ай бұрын
EQ has some things which I think should be brought back, but a LOT which is just terrible: Forced grouping to do basic (i.e. leveling) content for most classes unless you are twinked to the gills, ridiculous spawn timers on mobs, incredibly harsh death penalty spring to mind. All things that can and should be adjusted, but not to the extent that more modern MMOs (read: WoW) went. IMHO there's a happy medium that has yet to be realized between harsh ultra-grindy and rollercoaster themepark.
@brianross99267 ай бұрын
Live or TLP EQ is much more middle ground when compared to project 1999
@dessius7 ай бұрын
I think with the aspects you're talking about, Classic WoW may be the closest MMO experience to balance those relatively successfully.

@@brianross9926 Yeah, my first EQ experience was on Oakwynd, it wasn't bad although some stuff (NPC respawns, spent a week trying to get the guy for testament of vanear, spent like 3 days farming the ancient croc) was ridiculous
@brianross99267 ай бұрын
@@Nobleshield I find some of that kind of stuff appealing because not only does it make it more exciting and meaningful when you accomplish something. But, it also gives some longevity to the game instead of having nothing else left to chase or do. It can certainly be frustrating in the process though so, I get it :)

The old style graphics are superior. Less hardware intensive primarily. And on down the list, to play a game doesn't require the latest and greatest graphics with the smallest pixels to be successful. Plenty of indie games can prove this. But one word of warning regarding old school EQ, it is not for the helicopter parented children who think they deserve a trophy for everything they do. This game was very unforgiving, and even rewarding in many ways than just phat lewts.

Nice druid, man! I twinked my bard a bit with some decent armor and a faster sword over on Quarm and got her to 6 whereas my necro main is halfway through 35. I also went on a cruise last week so I didn't have time for EQ but that was fun its own right. EQ is definitely a product of its time and although slightly less classic, even vanilla WoW plays differently from early EQ. Early vanilla patches are similarly hard to EQ in terms of mob difficulty from what I understand and based on servers I've seen. 2019's Classic WoW rerelease used the final vanilla patch which already had a lot of nerfs and now even Classic Era has some changes so the purists are understandably mad, especially because it didn't capture the full essence due to nerfs and things like no progressive itemization. That bell on death sounds like a MIDI bug. It's supposed to be an actual song and not just a sound like completing a quest or leveling up. It kinda makes me sad that Fortnite: Save The World is less recognized than Battle Royale because I love co-op.
