I have tried high sierra for about 3 months and found it alright, up until its latest "security update" earlier this weekend. Now I hate it, and seek to get rid of it for good, going back to El Capitan. It's been a serious struggle with bootable usb, recovery mode, etc. .... I'll get there, as I'm very determined - to the point of OCD. My late 2011 with an SSD and 16GB ram shall fight the good fight until it dies. Only then will I replace it, and if need be go beyond El Capitan.

@@ahkeee856 I basically singed into app store with the account I was signed in on before I reset my computer and then I went into the purchased section and it had all the apps on like pages and keynote and numbers and it says install next to them and u press it and then it says do u want to download an older version of the app and u click yh and then it downloads the version you had before :) I hope it helps you! I would still use Mavericks if I could get away with it, but I live in a society. Hence, I need my internet browser to function in a relatively efficient manner. I updated to Catalina in Dec 2019, then went back. Now I'm at El Capitan. I'm considering going to Sierra, just for the Night Shift feature. I currently have the Iris app, but it's not as good.

It’s still usable. I use El Capitan everyday on a 2009 mbp and don’t want to upgrade. Some iWork apps can’t run on my Mac ( I cant find the older versions), but I managed to get iLife 09. I use opera gx browser and brave. (Chrome kills my Mac), and I do play some games, simple games, like highway rally, muiltcraft. I do use bitedefender’s anti virus and scanning ( an slightly older 2019 version), but anyways I don’t wanna upgrade, and my Mac doesn’t support 10.14 Mojave unless i patch it.

Its still very usable. Using a Mac Mini early 2009, with the lovely Apple bluetooth keyboard with the 2 AA batteries and Apple Magic Mouse with 2 AA batteries. Using Firefox 78.15 (the latest ESR). I've never done a clean install but would like to as it would run faster. But its fine. Web surfing is fine too.

Unfortunately yes. The newest operating systems need good specs, when you upgrade to a newer Version your pc gets slower with the time. It’ll be good to invest money into a new pc that you can use years more. But when you like to use it very long for like 12 years+ a Windows pc would better because you can switch everything like RAM or GPU and CPU.

@@aedan2003 Surprisingly well. I did bump the RAM up to 8GB. Takes a little time to get up and going but it runs every application well - and doesn't skip a beat with 6-7 things running at a time. I did purchase a 500GB SSD that will be going in soon, I'm hoping that speeds things up a bit.

If you’ve purchased the app before, if you’re logged in to the App Store, you should be able to download an older version of it. Check the purchases tab. If you haven’t and it just doesn’t work on El Capitan, though, I’m afraid you’ll have to get a new Mac. If you want one that runs the latest version of macOS, make sure it’s from 2013-14 or later. Hope this helps!

Oddly enough, I can't find the link anymore. I know it was on the Microsoft website somewhere. Support for Office 2016 will end in a couple of months though, so I would just suggest trying LibreOffice, OpenOffice, or Google Docs, all of which are currently being updated AND supported on El Capitan.

Hi! Oh wow, Catalina destroyed your MacBook? Like it’s stuck on the boot screen? Your data is probably still there, so if you make a new partition and install another OS, you can probably get it back. As to what OS I’d recommend? I’d just say Catalina! If you’re installing from scratch, it most likely won’t break like it did before. On my iMac, Yosemite wouldn’t install and I got stuck on the boot screen, but when installing Yosemite from scratch, it worked well. I haven’t had any problems with Catalina. If you need something other than Catalina, I would just go with Mojave. It still has support and security updates (High Sierra will lose them this fall, and Sierra and below currently aren’t supported), and also supports 32-bit apps, which Catalina does not. Hope this helps!

You're welcome, I'm happy to help! It's interesting, as the Early 2015 12" MacBook is the exact laptop I've been using for over 5 years now! So to fix your Mac, turn it on, and when you hear the startup chime, hold Command (⌘) and R together. Click on Disk Utility, select your hard drive, and add a 20-30GB (or at least around 10-15) partition. Here is a website that shows you how: www.mobigyaan.com/how-to-create-a-new-partition-on-your-mac Now, boot up into that same macOS (or OS X) utilities window (⌘ + R) on boot up once the partition is made, or if you can just close out and get back to the Utilities screen that's fine too. Click install macOS/OS X (I'm not sure what version it'll give you, but most likely something recent), and then install it on the new partition. It'll feel like your computer's new. Get a USB drive/external HDD and copy off all of your old data. I wish there was more than just one small USB-C port on the MacBook, but it'll still work fine! Once it's copied off (be sure *everything* is, you can erase all partitions on your Mac via Disk Utility. Shut it down and hold Shift-Option-⌘-R. It'll put you into Internet Recovery mode and install the version of Yosemite that shipped with your Mac. From there, it'll be truly factory fresh, and you can download Catalina or whatever version you want (I'd recommend Catalina, though) from the App Store and install it again. Then, put all of your data back on. Follow these steps and you should be good to go! Hope it helps, and keep me posted!

That's odd... try searching Catalina in the App Store and see what comes up. Your Mac is compatible with macOS Catalina and will be compatible with Big Sur as well.

I get to learn what works and what doesn’t along the way as I create these videos, and it really intrigues me to see how usable old-but-gold Macs that can’t upgrade past these operating systems are! In fact, I plan to upload one about High Sierra soon! As far as your question, I’d say the truly largest graphical overhaul was brought in OS X 10.10 Yosemite, with OS X 10.5 Leopard being a close contender. 10.4.7 Tiger was the first version of OS X to support Intel processors, which is also a large change/improvement.

I still use High Sierra . I dont really like change . I already have an iPad I dont want the same interface on my MacBook. Plus it's fast and reliable and looks pretty modern still. Big Sur looks too tabletyyy.

High Sierra does look pretty modern still, except for the gray window bars. Big Sur's design is pretty polarizing and surprising, especially since it seemed like Apple was trying to switch towards more circular-shaped app icons. I like it personally, but it definitely takes some getting used to.

That's a good idea to have upgraded! Your files wouldn't have been deleted per se, but your computer wouldn't have been recieving any security updates. Is your Mac unable to upgrade past High Sierra? If not, I don't see any downside to upgrading to Catalina either. Though, if you do, make sure to back up your data in case anything goes wrong. Thanks for stopping by!

19 years now! I wouldn't say XP is usable in 2020, but it certainly is more usable than even something like OS X Snow Leopard from 2009. The still-great 2012 Retina MacBook Pro is now incapable of running the latest version of OS X, while machines from the mid-2000s can run Windows 10 well. Apple and Microsoft just have different models, and, by adopting the "drop support for old but still technically good Macs" model, Apple can allow Macs to advance more quickly as a platform and allow the macOS experience to be much more consistent across the board. Plus, imagine having to support something like macOS Big Sur on something like a pre-unibody MacBook Pro. It just wouldn't run well! The quick loss of support is also due to the fact that there are yearly macOS updates, which I think is a cool model as well. I'm always excited for WWDC!

The latest version won't work, but a version from a few years ago (which will be quite similar) certainly will. Video editing certainly should be possible!
