People buy into others opinions because critical thinking is hard and most people are not equipped with the knowledge and experience to actually intimately know what they want, much less what'd make for a better game. Most players don't know what they actually want or what they'd enjoy until it's right in front of them and they're playing it... There's a reason they're just players and not game developers. GGG has a big picture vision of the game they're building and considering how every aspect of the game works (combat animations and interactions allowing for more engaging combat, with more room for player decisions and back-and-forth with enemies), and yet these guys are acting like they just took a big dumb dial labeled "game speed" and dialed it down just... to piss people off, I guess? That's what it genuinely looks like when you read angry comments. Even the base game brings new experiences, you have not seen in other ARPGS (at least for me). When i first visited trials to get my acendancy (Labyrinth) i was positively mindblown by what i have expericenced and how the trials felt different to rest of the game and how they got harder by structure changes not just by numbers. In every ARPG i have played, the environment nad traps have always been a joke. Here it is almost completely new experience. //You need to remeber only few things: Life (amount) and Elemental Resistances matter. Spell skill gems scale mostly with gem level. Attack skill gem scale mostly with weapon (meaning you care about damage of your attack weapon). Read descriptions.// That is all.

Also for clarity in the crucible league I did beat the campaign but had pretty much burned out by then, especially with the knowledge that there was so much more to learn. I'm worried about the crafting system too. While the new chaos orb looks fun and more interesting than just rerolling an item, crafting steps involving this technique in current poe more or less allways involve a craftingbench mod. So the new chaos orb without the crafting bench and no alternative to the crafting bench feels bad. When it comes to gold I disagree. If the game is not accessible right now because players don't have a certain currency to buy something of the vendors then gold is no solution. If a player now says "Man i don't have an alchemy" then a player in poe2 will say "Man i don't have 2k gold". Gold doesn't help in a situation where a player just doesn't have the ressource needed to buy something. About the staff amount for current poe. Remeber they made Kalandra and Crucible too. So 50% good, 50% bad. All my hopes were that when poe2 is done that all the staff is working on the game we all love again. But now (hopefully) it's just half of them if they don't decide to prefer one over the other.
@Stainlesssteele4 Жыл бұрын
Gold could just be a way to alleviate tradeups and give more direct access to crafting currency players want in the moment. Say you want some Regrets, you needed 2 scours, which required 4 chance, which required fuses, which required jewellers, and so on. Same for alts and augs, you'd need a pile of portal scrolls to buy them in bulk. Gold could allow vendors to carry each orb type for a fixed amount without the time spent converting currency up just to purchase the items you want. Granted, postgame when players are swimming in currency it's less relevant. But in that case, it could save you a lot of clicks if you wanted to buy enough alts and augs to slam an item 1200 times.
@SnizzleTille Жыл бұрын
@@Stainlesssteele4 This would introduce an issue where everything has a gold value attached to it because you could get every crafting ressource with gold. By making it so that you can uptrade currencys for a fixed vendor price you can balance how accesible a specific crafting option should be at the bare minimum. Gold should not be an ankerpoint in crafting currency values. The opportunity a specific crafting ressource offers you + the rarity should define how valueable it is. If the gold approach is only valueable during the campain to help new players I would not tell them "here is crafting currency. Try to craft a piece of gear with this complex system you propably don't understand untill you have played for 100 hours". I'd rather think about usefull side quest rewards where you can pick a piece of gear of you choice that favors whatever you are missing. For example you are guaranteed to get a body armor with at least +60% to ele res or you are guaranteed to get boots with at least 25% movement speed. I highly agree about what you said about the clicking. I myself am suffering from RSI like crazy. That is not an issue of having gold or not though. That is an issue of missing crafting UI, crafting automation or how difficult it can be rolling 2 specific mods on a magic item. Same goes for six links. You could just make it so that it takes 3-5 fus on average and make fus as rare as div/ex. I personally don't see any reason to introduce gold that could not get solved in a better way. Gold is just a lazy fix. Approaches that differ from industry standard is what poe needs (and by that i definetly don't mean "the well" *sigh*).

@john-bm4du Жыл бұрын
Hey Ziz, I get your point about unidentified items, but I personally think that the reason they are in PoE is the amount of item that actually drop - as you know, if you disable filter, there are way too many items possibly dropping at the same time, what i thikn the purpose of identifying items is optimization - items roll only when you identify them, if it dropped identified, you would suddenly have to roll everything and it could potentially lag during massive drops or massive screen clears. I dont know anything about poe's implementation and complexity but that is just my guess
@taronzgaming7739 Жыл бұрын
Your argument makes sense except blight exists, where if you're not running a strict enough filter, just finishing a blighted map can cause your game to shit the bed. That already happens with unid items... that being said, the items are -already- rolled when they are dropped. We've seen plenty of items items drop > id > crash/rollback > id > same item. So the items are rolled on drop rather than on ID. The nicest value to them dropping identified is you could filter them more effectively. Last Epochs item filter is just next level for that. You can have it show as little or as much as you want, a single affix, or a total tier level of affixes of certain types among other things.... which feels incredible as a player. I love POE, have been playing for about 12 years now (sometime in closed beta), but some of the choices they make are rather strange... the ID item thing being one of them.

The identify all is a good compromise. If items were displayed on the floor fully identified it creates a situation where you will literally never pick up any item unless it is good because you will filter out every single item that isn't full of t1 and t2 mods. I have a suspicion that if they let items drop fully IDed they would immediately gut item power to make those kinds of items even rarer, since right now many simply just rot never being picked up. I think another option would be to allow items in your inventory to become identified with no friction, rather than having to go to town, but not letting a filter automatically grey out the bad items. So you pick an inventory of items up and a little orb or some shit in your inventory screen just plays a .5 second animation across your inventory and the items are all identified for you to look at yourself to decide what is good or bad

When I first saw the dodge rolling mechanic was put in POE2 I cringed a little. Dodge rolling only lends itself to a slower paced game. That is just a fact. Why would you need to roll when you can just move fast enough to dodge everything? It fits D4 because D4 is a slow game. We all know that. That in itself is a big issue for me since I have always been a fan of rolling through packs of monsters at a fast pace until you come in contact with elites and such with affixes. Those are the ones that are meant to slow you down and be a challenge, not the packs. I am personally just not a fan of the slower gameplay in an ARPG. I actually went back to POE recently and man it felt 1,000x better than D4 and made me remember what the other Diablos felt like. I do have a sorcerer with ICE SHARD build on D4, but we all know the energy/Mana/Fury use VS using skills is just terrible and slows you down so bad. It's just not fluid. I can only hope that POE2 simply put dodge roll in because its a liked feature by ARPG players, however the game still plays like POE1 and you just happen to be able to roll.

Crafting is great at late game. The problem is that crafting reagents/currency before that don't get used, because they are too expensive to 'waste'. Other than flasks and the odd chromatic spam, I don't craft until later mapping. Likewise, I'm not picking up and identifying rares after early game, either. Once I find some good ones for my build for each slot, I'm done with that. I'd rather just rush through at that point, because I would have to sort through junk after junk to find a slightly better diamond - nevermind considering the expense and time of crafting at that point. Mid-late game, I'm buying items. It is so much more value for my time, and the expense is often minimal. So, yeah, until late game I'm not crafting and I'm hardly interacting with loot, either. Would gold help here? If it means early to mid crafting reagents can be bought cheaply for gold, then sure. Would having items be already identified and then filtered by a loot filter help? Absolutely.

Thank you for the information Ziz! Following some stuffs you said: I definitely think PoE needed that "clean slate" in term of speed and combat. I suspect your video might be an answer to some of the threads that poped up on the forums. But I'm pretty sure that these people are an extremely thin margin of the PoE players. We've been playing PoE for over 10 years, I think it's safe to say that we need some real changes to still enjoy PoE in 10 years. The problem is, the ARPG community is hard to satisfy. You produce a game that is more or less the same as the previous one with a bit of improvements, people are criticizing it because "it's too much like the previous one" (D4), you're clearly breaking the feeling and pace of the game "it's not enough like the original anymore" (PoE 2), and if you do not take any risk, well... you guessed it "they do not take risks!". I'm happy that GGG tries to change the game more in depth. Even if they did a complete clean slate on the skills, passive and ... well anything in the game, I would still be happy because I'm trusting GGG enough in terms of game design. We need renewal, we need a game that can evolve and progress over the years. People wanting the game to stay the same are most certainly too attached to "habits" and are probably too nostalgic. Path of Exile needs to evolve, Path of Exile needs to change, and PoE2 is the answer to that : )

@@rpemulis idk even know why i will but lets go about it a bit ok? what is the point of having 500 possible ways of killing the a Pinnacle boss in 0.4 seconds? there is something i think everyone recognizes quite easily, and that is the 2 kinds of difficulty in games, First, you got stats, numbers, 400%hp monsters deal 80% extra damage as fire and reflect elemental damage, which i think is artificial. Then you have the difficulty in mastering, its when the game can get you killed without being unfair to you in numbers using mechanics. So the question is, is it really no other way to feel powerful by manipulating the system? Maybe your speed is useful to dodge more instead of only dealing more damage? Maybe your strength can interrupt heavy hitting skills instead of only dealing more damage? maybe your int can increase the number of ways you can make the fight easier to you instead of only dealing more damage? like... idk... try fighting the first izaro fight using a level 100 character, it will be fast, but will it be fun? the fact that you argument for buildcrafting serves only to be as powerful as possible, and i think you meant by killing everything really fast is really sad PoE is still the better game but tbh, i had more fun in the story.
@rpemulis Жыл бұрын
@@Leonardo-us9wu i do think killing izaro at level 100 is fun actually. thats the culmination of 50+ hours of effort and clever buildcrafting, thats coming back to a boss that was at one point threatening and stomping him out. my first eater of the league was always scary to me, i was always so nervous i'd brick it and have to refarm it out. the last one? i'm now the god and delete him in 5 seconds. i think ARPG's mostly don't offer this experience anymore aside from POE, they don't let you eventually get to the point where you can get to some comedic power cap. diablo doesn't, D3 and 4 are so obsessed with engaging combat that they don't give you an endpoint. everything just scales for forever. i think a world where POE2 is more interested in keeping combat tactical forever seems less interesting to me, but we'll see how it plays out.

Yeah when I saw Exilecon, it was the exact same as the last one, or even some previews into seasonal content in PoE1 during reveals, usually most of the characters they demo with is undertuned on purpose to better show off specific skills or content. Same situation here with everything being overtuned to the characters being played. But to people who are less familiar with GGG don't realize that. I imagine the game will be much faster then what people realize because we got endgame to focus on as well with maps and gearing with Uniques, gem links for utility etc. We got another taste, but still don't know much how it will be when we fully play it with so many unknowns and tweaks. Either way I'm not worried. We got another year, important thing is this game shows alot of promise and with GGG's background on endgame vs other titles (I wont say it) we will be fine.

It’s very clear that the demo was slow by design. The passive tree isn’t done yet, otherwise they would allow people to see it, the characters all started with maybe one rare item, and some magic and normal items so there’s potential to speed up there. I remember them saying rolling depends on character speed so maybe the qs flask was causing balance issues with that. The crafting changes kinda bummed me out too, but the truth is that crafting now is very hard for fresh players. I started my first season in crucible league after the d4 beta made me want to try something more complex and it took me a whole league to understand what most currencies do and what the good mods even are… i still haven’t got into beast crafting, only now figured out eldritch crafting and I’m still iffy on it. In one of the dev q&a’s they also said they wanted everything to be slower to start with so that we can have room for 10 more years of power creep. I’m hopeful, i also feel ggg are smart and in touch enough to take the complaints that matter into consideration. Nobody liked the well thing, GGG if you ever see this, just get rid of the well pls.

It should be way slower in the end game (compared to POE1), you can't even tell what's happening in POE1 late-game. What they have shown on the exilecon (with the power scale of creeps) is just perfect, and do have some Elden Ring vibes. IMHO - if we take the power scale away and put on top of that - skill tree buff - decent item buffs - remove the under level - then it's going to get again to one shot everything and roll through all the content. Yes some speed up is required to have a feeling of progression , but not to the ridiculous amount that POE1 has , hopefully the maximum speed gain we get is about ~300% (based on the animations preview we had on the exliecon) compared to what we have been shown in the gameplay

Considering that they separated the game from the poe 1, and it has some slower animations ft. dodge roll mechanic, maybe they really want to give it a different pace. But i wouldne be too worried about that, if for example the endgame have the diablo 4 game speed will be amazing. The point is that the current poe 1, has no gemaplay depth, you just walk fast as possible clicking the mouse right button and delete the map as fast as possible, if the game were slower we would need to manage better our positioning and would be able to intereact better with enemies skills and that kinda of stuff, personally i enjoy much more the slower pace than the current poe pace (but not as slow as they've shown in the exilecon)

The well doesn't make sense to me either, though Jonathan said it's a "feel" thing. Still, I don't see it adding anything to the gameplay. Take EFT, for example. You have to manually load your weapons magazines or simply wait when looting a body as searching takes time realistically, sure, however in this case, these things add to the gameplay and create unique moments. Me clicking a well in my hideout isn't doing anything for me other than waste time.

It feels like they want to make the "item drops matter more" which most of us wanted, so rather than nolifing the game and farming currency, we can just play the game and "chase items" by checking out drops and upgrading them with currency/league mechanics, that's why the crafting bench is gone, I'd say new/casual players didnt know about it anyway (or the hideout). The downside of this approach is that now you also have to balance drops (as in, make the item drops recognize who they drop for [see diablo 3]) as otherwise people might get stuck for too long between upgrades (I think thats what will happen for the vendors since they mentioned that "you will get what you need" during levelling) . The chaos orb change supports this, I'm excited for this particular change as I'm also looking forward to working with rares I've picked rather than crafting by "spamming alt/essence/chaos" or farming currency to trade. The indentification thing is that fantasy of "getting an adrenaline rush when you identify a cool item" which the people that made us, the diablo guys, kind of talked about (similar to having gold drop to have the mobs drop anything) during the roundtable but I agree its more of Chris' nostalgia nowadays and/or might be too expensive manhours-wise because lots if items would have to be generated without being picked/used, especially in poe1.

Regarding flasks. I'm not a very experienced POE player, but I know that flasks add a lot to the character's power. And the thing is that while mapping they could be constantly (or most of the time) active cause they will refill fast. So then the point of making them clickable is just inconvenient. That's why (I guess) there are gems that trigger flasks on a specific action. So it almost feels like you obtain a passive skill but in a little bit weird way. By making players refill flasks in towns they probably want to make this resource more valuable. But only if portal scrolls will not be a common drop as they are now. I have a feeling that POE 2 will focus more on the gamers' skills like: character control, resource management, etc. POE 1 seems to be focused more on build creation, when you are just slamming everything on your way with the 'correct' build or die constantly if you failed with it. So in POE 2 you will have chances to get further with a weak build by being a more skillful (in character control) player. And potentially do smth similar to what people do in souls games: beating the whole game with a scoop or broom or whatever they have there.

I don't know if we will ever see it because I think the competing interests of the two fanbases would clash(desire for ruthlessly hard game/desire for invincible god builds) but games like Nioh 1+2 showcase that there is a desire for a deeply customizable looter+souls-like and I would really love if these genres cross pollinated even more to the point that GGG had the resources and drive to make a more souls-like inspired path of exile. The way those games handle their lore and atmosphere fits well with path of exiles whole vibe and how badass would it be to be swinging around a Atziri's Disfavor with unique attacks/animations fighting bosses dark souls/monster hunter style. I'm sure it would be a massive undertaking and expensive project as it requires a completely different engine and control scheme, but hell I'm sure if GGG licensed the IP over to Team Ninja(who did Strangers of Paradise, Nioh 1+2 etc) they would do the bulk of the work and then all thats needed at that point is a couple of lead devs from GGG to oversee some of the skill tree and endgame systems to match with PoEs current philosophies. I’m happy it seems like you’re doing better. Now about the speed “issue” I think once we know what endgame is we can see if it’s that big of an “issue” also like you said this is all a pre beta demo with the live beta being a year away there’s plenty of time for changes. Personally I think movement was hamstrung for two reasons. First zooming through maps isn’t going to make the game look fun it’s actually going to have the opposite effect on some potential players were they think the super speed looks bad, so slower gameplay shows the game off more to a more “casual” audience. Secondly the demo probably didn’t have a lot of content and if you speed through what they did have, maybe a couple maps, you would’ve probably crashed the game, hit a barrier, or ended the demo. IMO that demo was way too polished for where they were in the development process so it was likely everything they had ready slapped together into chunks of gameplay to test the concept and mechanical changes.

I know a lot of people will prefer the faster-paced combat of POE1 and that's totally fine, but I really enjoy these games where battles feel important, like every enemy is a potential danger. When you get to endgame in most (if not all) ARPGs you start oneshotting every monster and it gets really boring, all you can do is try to speedrun faster and faster through levels. I would really appreciate an ARPG where there is a smaller monster density but mosters are a bit more relevant. I would say this is the formula that Souls games follow, so I might be biased, but I just enjoy wholesome battles much more than wiping screens.

I am so glad you are not a game designer on this game.

gold could be renamed as "drop shards" if they have a gambler. identified items can be one of those "you think you do but you don't" if the items actually are useful, you can go "oh, nice a vaal regalia, let's see what it does" and identifying the gear is a loot box, which is fun to open if you have decent odds to get something good. same way why don't stacked decks drop as random div cards? because opening them is fun. where it becomes complicated is that items dropping identified means you can filter good and bad items, and overall you basically only pickup items that are worth something according to the filter, which may miss good ones if not configured properly. I think identified items work in last epoch, because the mods have individual value, as you can basically extract the mod. but in poe you need most of the mods on the item to be good together. I mean, sure you could just make items drop identified, but I don't think it'd be much better.

Items dropping unidentified is a mechanic thats used for trading because of roll variance. So you can sell certain uniques etc unid. Also some people like the suspense of identifying because of roll variance. I think its good they keep it.

It's also for performance reasons, the item stats are rolled when you ID them, it's like the items are blank and when you ID, you throw an alchemy on them

They already confirm the crafting bench is not currently in the game. I think crafting with currency items is 100% locked in, but the bench…one of the few ways to deterministically get affixes you want. Hopefully they don’t rely wholly on rng currency rolls for crafting cause that will be miserable.

The demos were preset characters with low levels and no gear. Worse case scenario the meta becomes grind mobs till you outlevel your zone by a few levels and boom your moving fast again.

On the outset the video is decent, but I do wish more editorial amendments such as "5-10 people have been working on PoE 1 the last couple of years" because it sets unrealistic expectations, and it was confirmed to still be 20+ people which creates a whole different perspective on poe1 since 2019 exilecon

(Noob POE here) ... what if the identify cost escalates exponentially depending on the rarity? It shouldn't be 1 scroll per item regardless of rarity.
