Is Persona 5 X Actually Bad? (First Impressions)

Persona 5 the Phantom X has released in China, Taiwan, and Korea.
There's a lot to unpack about this game but I want to give a disclaimer:
First off, any of the gameplay footage you are seeing with English Text has only been made possible thanks to the modders who created the AutoTranslator mod on the P5X Discord.
Secondly, please note that these are machine translations. While the basic meaning may be retained, there can and will be a lot lost in translation. I do not intend to have anyone viewing this video believe that I think I understand the narrative and characters to their fullest. Until the game comes to global, I will not be heavily rating this games content in a narrative sense. That said, it still is possible to understand the baseline of the narrative so I will have some criticisms on that level.
But with Persona 5 the Phantom X in our hands, I want to talk about how I feel about this game so far. This is a pretty lengthy video and it doesn't cover every single thing I want to talk about, but it's fairly comprehensive so I hope you'll see it through to the end.

I believe the narrative paralells to OG P5/P5R are purposeful in the same way it was for Persona 2 Eternal Punishment to Persona 2 Innocent Sin, especially with the alternate universe plot point as well.

Yeah, I haven't fully considered the mirroring to be intentional, but it could make sense. I'm very curious to see where the main plot goes from here, but I don't expect us to get to dig deep for a long time.

I played the game with this mindset before diving in and just tried it because it was a persona game 12 days later and I'm hooked The only reason I'm not logged in is because I ran out of stamina and I'm waiting to reach the needed level to progress

The game isn't that bad. Cultural differences is a factor in terms of perception of mobile gaming. Mobile gacha games thrives more in Asian regions due to the work/study demographics, with mobile gaming being a good form of short time entertainment, as long as there's a good phone model and stable internet connection. Ever since Genshin's debut to the market, lots of mobile games produced in China exceeds Japan's standards, in terms of quality and service. Taking into account there's tons of concepts artwork/narratives unused during P5 initial production, P5X is their other chance to display a different angle/perception of their unused concepts. So far Strikers have reused a few unused but important concepts initially taken out in Royal. Plus some of the character designs seems to be inspired from initial concept artwork from the original P5. Since P5X producers teased more event collaboration with other P5 console titles; Royal, Strikers, Tactica etc., its a good opportunity to display their spin-offs/follow up story characters in a turn based setting. Regarding gacha, it wasn't that bad as long as the player has self control and knows what they want. Watched several day 1 no gacha accounts, the content creators have lots of self control, even competing difficult challenges without gacha. One notable Honkai streamer MG didn't pull day 1 in Star Rail, managed to get E6 S5 Acheron in less than 800 pulls, plus several new characters/light cones. His current self challenge is not pull for starter/standard gacha until he accumulated 340 standard tickets for a full pull session video.

I understand both sides on gacha. As someone who does enjoy Hoyo games I find being able to at least play the game without needing to spend a dime is nice. I wholly understand that they are predatory in nature but I've found they're also a great tool for learning to save and spend. Regardless the overall quality of the game is so close to being really good and is just held back by a few layers of polish imo. But I get why people have their gripes.

Storywise is meh but enjoyable loving it for now. İt's great thing that they put skip button in most cutscenes. I can just skip whenever I feel bored or the owl talks about something morgana couldn't shut his mouth about in p5r. Idk if it's just me or gacha system in taiwan is realy rewarding bc so far I got the all characters in the game. Mini games are fun. A lot to do in the game. I can just play open the game to play the music mini game. But the gacha grinding can be boring and a lot of players might quit after spending some months playing the game. I haven't unlocked the artifact system yet so I can't make comments on that but I hope it will be more easy than hoyo games. But I fear that game will punish you for not playing the game like some gacha games. I'll give the game some time and see if it becomes a classic gacha game then I will simply quit. After all, a gacha game is against the themes of the modern persona games.

The Personas as of right now aren't units you pull for. The game gives you some but they're pretty basic. I assume Mara is fusable or a farmable boss but I've yet to encounter the schlong dong, so maybe he's just not available yet.

Kind of realize I didn't fully address the dailies system. But short answer is yes. Long answer is: the game gives you daily points (5 per day but cap is 20) and you can use those to progress relationships with certain characters. The points can also be used for stuff like working, watching movies, basically most of the life sim stuff. As I am early into the game, a lot of the slinks dont have a real "structure" to them right now but I haven't progressed too far in yet anyways, so it could actually have more of a story later. Again this is an early gacha so as long as the game is profitable things will likely improve. But I'll revisit this topic later if that happens.

I think so yeah. It's almost definitely more of a "when" rather than an "if" she will be added. But the current build of the game only has the OCs, Joker, Morgana, Ryuji, and Ann fully available so it'll be a while. The game is currently running on a 2 week patch cycle so this could happen very fast or slow depending on how they choose to add characters.

​@@TillerBric I believe the update cycle will extend once the 5th core member Riko joins. My guess is that the short update cycles is to introduce the characters and the structure of the alternative timeline, then once the full core team assembles, they can slow down. Developer livestream teases more event collaboration with other P5 console titles, which means Sumi, Sophia, Zenkichi, and Toshiro/Erina will be playable. Likely limited banner characters/associated gear like Ren, plus event dungeon/stages similar to the first P5 collab with the first 4 mainline thieves. For Strikers collab, it might work as separate parts/stories released in different update cycles, like Another Eden P5R collab (Ren and Mona in part 1, Ryuji and Sumi in part 2)

The other thieves have been in the closed betas. Yusuke, Makoto, Futaba, Haru, and Akechi (Robin Hood) were present and playable in beta but with current release they're not made available yet.

It's a persona 5 gacha, not need to say much. They did a really good job to transcribe persona solo games into a gacha game. But if you're not a persona fan i don't think the game is for you.

The good things about Star Rail is that you can get away with 4 stars team comp. (with decent or maxed Eidolons), because you can compensate from good relics and synerg team comp. so If this at least on that level, I'm in. From Star Rail I learned that turn-based combat like this tend to powercrept easier, so I want to try minimal gacha run.

I'm in the second palace now, and while it is much harder to get away with 4 star comps, this is early gacha and you will just not have the resources to do it if you're putting in tons of hours and no money. The entire game is pretty possible with 4 stars, but you probably will want to pull the basic early 4 stars to cover your bases. The weakness system here is more important than Star Rail's. Some challenge bosses pretty much require this if you're under geared like I am. That said, I'm having a blast without putting in a dime.

@@TillerBric Yeah, if it is using Persona combat as a base, even in the main game, weakness > higher tier non weakness. Do we have some kind of “same copy upgrade” like Star Rail? (I guess it have because the nature of gacha games).

Yep, the system of multiple copies = enhancement exists here. There is kind of an unbrupt difficulty spike in Palace 2 though. If you intend to only play using 4 stars I'd say patience is key. A lot of challenge fights I did will require you to actually gear more, without 5 stars. But there is also the language barrier currently making things harder than they should be so i guess I'll see when I replay for global servers.

​@TillerBric Currently working through 2nd palace with barely any leveled relics and my chars at 50. I've been able to push through 51+ content with 4* chars and a bit of brain power (namely through Mont and the Frey buffer guy w/ slotting others in and out relative to weaknesses). Morgana helps a lot and thankfully they're a free character so I encourage all newbies to grab them w/ their guide pick but Lufer + MC healing can still hold things over with proper planning and our lovely scuba diver shielder support. I did the entire first palace and half of the 2nd without Morgana so they aren't required either for progression, just helpful. 😊 I'm also top 6% in their abyss without whaling. I'd like to agree that dupes are required but I've yet to see a piece of content that requires them to clear (unless you care about being in the top 0-1% of players for ranking reasons).

its good but i dont play/support gacha at all. my last game was nier reincarnation with i got really into then it just ended without anything to keep afterwards. i like OWNING the games i play, not being subjected to it ending on the terms of faceless chinese corpo. easy pass for me. ill just watch it on youtube.
