Mikey, youir live readings on the motor wires were because this is a 240v system. With a 240v system, BOTH incoming legs are live, and the purple (common) wire is live at 120v (one half of the 240v waveform or leg if you prefer.) The no contact was correctly reading that as live power (at 120v) which will pass thru the motor windings (and the cap) to show up on the two speed wires, which are switched to the other leg of the incoming 240v by the control board. So those ends were very much live at 120v and would have given a very dangerous shock if touched. Now on a 120v air handler, if wired properly, the motor common would have been on the neutral which would have made all three motor wires read as dead.
@emduplessis9996

Thanks for that explanation! I was wondering while watching the non-contact voltage detector light up on seemingly disconnected wires why it was detecting voltage. And what the purple wire was for. Thank you.

Peter is the type of guy that needs a leader at this point in life. You are that for him. Only way to fully know if he’s ready is to send him on a call with Daniel or the other mike and have him take the lead because I think around you, he is intimidated or has expectations of you jumping in. So if you want to really know, we have to send him off with Daniel, eliminate you and see what Daniel has to say. This is it no disrespect to you, but we have to get you out of there to really know what he’s capable of. You’re his mentor. He has way too much respect to do a task like this in front of his mentor. I hope that angle helped.

Take that as a compliment. I have a medicine mentor still and if he was in his cadaver lab and asked me to do a spinal stimulator on a spine id be nervous as hell bc hes standing right there. just another angle. He also kinda relies on you too. You 2 have different personality types that actually work well together. But if you really want to know what he can do, send him with someone. Peter is a special person that will do well in this field, he just needs someone to teach and help him along the way (kinda like someone else we know). @@PipeDoctor

Did I missed that or the assumption was made because power was getting to fan motor and not starting? Thank you Mikey for accepting our questions and always responding.

Hey Mike, I think he is willing to learn and help, but not run a call by himself yet. What might be good is that if he runs a call all by himself and you just shadow him, just not saying anything just to tell the customer that you are doing a "check-ride" with him. Let him interact with the customers and all as well. Just if you weren't there. 👍🤠 Hate to throw him in the deep end, but he needs to learn to swim by himself. Only Peter can save himself. Maybe the camera on him adds a bit more pressure as well, but so would a customer staring over his shoulder too asking him questions. I know I would be that guy asking him all sorts of things. Back many years ago when I was doing industrial controls at a large auto plant, they had an issue during production, it was up to me to get the line back and operating. The entire production line was stopped and the "white shirts" better known as management starting coming around and gathering, all yelling at me to get this "bleeping" thing fixed and going. I politely asked if you stop yelling at me and let me work, I can get it going much faster and walked away to go fix it. There was a few lines of code that was missing in the PLC, got things up and going in a min or two. They were happy and went back to where ever management sits when not yelling at people! He is representing your company, so you need to make sure he can do that in a professional manor. He is doing much better than before, but has a way to go. Maybe you can discount a few service calls if his time goes over to let him learn by his mistakes, just like the blower motor in backwards. Obviously you would need to step in if something was dangerous, but otherwise let him run it all by himself. If that was a gas furnace you could easily trip out on high temp with very low airflow over the burners. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

@realSamAndrew
@realSamAndrew 11 ай бұрын
@@harryschrysan3183 never said it wasn't a big difference. I simply said it's not low enough to not start the motor. It should be replaced for sure. And it's weak, and perhaps will run the fan slow. But normally, it's enough to get the motor going. If the motor was so weak that a slightly off capacitor is enough to cripple it, then the motor is going to need replacement anyway. The capacitor won't be the reason for the motor not doing anything. If you checked it and it's zero or say 0.6 or 1.1, that could easily be the only thing wrong.

We can't answer if he is ready, only you can since you are the master :) But I would say that it would be hard for us to gauge since we haven't seen him demonstrate knowledge other then the pop quizzes you give. When he's doing the work you are literally telling him step by step, tool by tool what to do. Perhaps it's time to have Peter run a service call by himself. Set it up so he has to do the work start to finish, set the rules that he can ask you questions if he is unsure of something but outside of that, you only step in if he is about to do something dangerous :)

No it is not! BTW the "EMF" from a capacitor that is not powered up is DC, not Ac, and most no contact testers do not respond to DC.

By now Peter should not need You to direct his every move. I'm sure he's a great guy but it is so obvious that he's just not cut out for hvac. I'm sure I'm not telling You anything You don't already know.

Peter doesn’t appear to have mechanical skills nor does he appear to want to improve those skills, it’s very possible he is just not interested in the business and should move on to what he wants in life

Peter will be fine working by him self as long as your'e not around. Anyone can see he feels uncomfortable when he's working with you. Also what the hell is wrong with you talking to a customer like that. Telling her she a hot 40 year old, it does not matter if you know them, and saying you are a ladies man. Grow up.
