I love pink princess, not because of any sort of value or status it could or would hold. It was the first plant I saw before I got into plants that was pink. The moment I learned they could even be pink! It was like a reminder that magic does exist. I have collected many different PPs from different places- outdoor grown in Hawaii, a mother that flowered, etc. I have such a wide variety of them from solid pink to more solid burgundy. I love them sooo much no matter how variegated it is, no matter the value. They were my first plant love. The ones with super amazing color are just a bonus ❤️

Same! I love mine, I’ve owned her for about 6 years now and in that time I’ve gifted a lot of cuttings from her to family and friends and they enjoy her now too. I adore her pink/ fuchsia/ cherry splashes/half moon as much as I love her deep almost black solid color “green” leaves. she’s about 4’ tall now and would have probably been a tree if I didn’t give so many pieces of her away lol.

I've had no issues with mine. It's nearly 4ft tall and has bright bubble gum pink variegation. I bought it with extremely low variegation from Costa Farms in April. I placed it under a grow light and it continually puts out highly variegated leaves. What works for some doesn't work for all.

Did u put urs on a stake ?? I just got mine about a week ago for 20 bucks , not a whole lot of variation ATM, but I have high hopes. Put her in my south facing window and went and got a humidifier. But I was wondering if I should stake it

@@erinjoy5625 Yes, I have it on a moss pole. For one it's so tall it needs the support and two, it helps put out larger leaves. My leaves are larger than my hands now.

I think what’s not cool about them no more is the fact that they are more accessible. It’s capitalism and Elitist at its best. I see the same issues on the strawberry shake? I think we should just grow shit and enjoy it and stop always wanting to one up one another

I got min for 10 bucks each. I like them because they're pretty. And I take care of them the same as my philodendron. I've got one that's immersed in my fish tank like my monstera ginny and swiss cheese plant. The other, including two orange philos, outside in my courtyard. They're doing great hanging out with my rubber tree, succulents, cordyline, angel wing begonia 🤷‍♀️

I just found a 4 inch pot with three plants inside for $13. It was labeled low variegation, but they are beautiful and just threw out a half moon leaf for me and I’ve only had it for a week and a half! The older leaves are super freckled and have lots of splashes so I’m hopeful that it will continue to stay somewhat pink. I’ve been patiently waiting and feverishly looking for the price to go down. I don’t spend more than $40 on any of my plants- and I rarely pay over $20 because I personally don’t want to have to worry about the plant dying and wasting that money. Or losing any variegation. I hope it continues to do well! If not, I’m not going to be super upset about losing $13. Now I just need to wait for the variegated Monstera deliciosa varieties to come down in price. 🤣 But I’m patient!

I have a small one. Paid $35aud, and frankly, I don’t regret it. Sure, I expect it to be a pop Princess, but I’m always excited to see the next leaf and see what I get. I wouldn’t spend more for a less variegated plant, absolutely, but I think they’re fun and I like the dark foliage too. I don’t have any of the issues with the fungus or leaves getting stuck.

I bought a PPP for £20 - £30 here in the UK. It now has 10 leaves that all have pink on them ranging between 30-90% and it looks wonderful. Definitely got lucky with my one...

Girl I’m sorry ~ I STILL LOOVE THIS PLANT!! Idk how anyone can’t.. I have 5 now and luckily I bought mine within last year for less then 60$ each.. but huge/HIGHLY VARIGATED.. if you use a T5 light = VARIEGATION FLOURISHES!! I will Never Ever pay over 100$ for a plant ever again. My most expensive are my strawberry shake & then red anderson. My red anderson died completely from shipping🤦🏼‍♀️😢😭 shipped form Thailand to USA.. So I’m content with my collection till spring

I don't think it has gone out of fashion or is no longer popular. it is still in some places with its high prices and is very difficult to acquire. it is not a common plant.

Let's be honest, influencers only care about ridiculously expensive plants. The Pink Princess Philodendron was idolized by them for years when it was expensive. Now, that it's cheaper and anyone can buy it, it's suddenly no longer interesting, suddenly it has a bunch of problems, and so on and so forth. We're seeing this happen with other species too. You can see a pattern.

This video is almost two years old so no this sentiment is not “suddenly” now they they’re more accessible… they have been popping up in box stores for over a year. This was filmed back when they were still pretty pricey and I stand by it but at least now that they are more affordable, if you want to try them out and have a bad experience growing them, you’re only out a few bucks instead of a pretty penny. I actually saw about five decent sized ones with some pretty leaves at the grocery store today. It is a shame though because now that plants are so much cheaper, a lot of small businesses are the ones that closed and the big tissue culture operations are the ones making the money 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I must have gotten lucky bc I recently got my ppp and she’s a really stunning .. high variegation and putting out new leaves .. but they have gotten stuck in the cataphyll and needed extra humidity and some gentle encouragement .. I’m happy to have this beautiful plant 🪴💗

I'm one of the few who never liked the Pink Princess. Especially after hearing how difficult it is to keep a nice level of variegation. I appreciate its beauty, but I would never bother worrying about it. On another note: yay, you found another "F"! And I love when you do the finger gun, lol! It always puts a smile on my face

I totally agree. I have about 150 plants and in no way shape or form wanting the PP. Don't have the time to give this much attention to one plant. I had someone get into a huge argument with me because I told them the original dirty secret of PP. The very 1st ones that came out were green and white variegated. They were then put into gasing rooms and treated with the same gas that is used to make it ripe bananas. They made them in huge bulk for parties & weddings. This information came from a large commercial grower. People don't like to hear all the dirty secrets of the plant community but I think it's important to give people information. I think that's why the 1st ones that came out were so spectacular.

I order plants from Orange Lake Nursery. I really appreciate that they labeled their pink princesses as specifically low variegation, for a lower price than the well variegated, when that was the case

I found 4 pink princesses in Home Depot for $19.99 and bought one, so I went back the next day, they were gone, so the demand still remains. The plants were well variegated, but I understand the variegation is unstable, so I plan to cut the reverted segments and propagate the pink cuttings - like I did to my marble queen.

I have many plants and they are gorgeous! BUT the PPP is a pain! My leaves are getting smaller and they always seem to get stuck! 😕 I did have a very pretty leaf with lovely pink several leaves ago. This spring I'm chopping it up. I keep it next to a humidifier. It gets wonderful bright light. We shall see. I agree with you!

I’m a late bloomer in plants. I’m mid 50s and just getting into them. I bought my PPP at my local grocery store and she’s lovely. I do not need or want finicky girls. Lol. She puts off a good mix of pink and green and really, at the end of the day, that’s all I wanted.

I have a PPP that I bought about 18 months ago and it took so long to acclimate and was such a mess for so long that I stopped paying attention to it. It finally seems to be growing but has never sized up, though every other leaf has decent variegation. I fully expected it to die six months ago but it's doing "okay".

The “Covid spawned plant community” is a very strange crowd. As an avid gardener, who has been growing Hoya and aroids for decades, I have been having a hard time understanding the “new crowd.” To jump from one plant to another, fueled by Instagram posts, is akin to the designer purse craze. One year, everyone wants Coach bags and the next month it’s Michael Kors. If you coveted a certain plant, and then you “cancel” this plant as soon it becomes more widely available and is less sought after…then I’d say, you never liked this plant in the first place. It’s all about a plant’s status within this new crowd of “plant collectors” and not the plant itself. And don’t get me started on these new “naming conventions” that are solely based on commerciality and not on botanical nomenclature. No….there is no P. erubescens ‘Pink Princess’ Galaxy or Marble, botanically, they are all P. erubescens cultivar ‘Pink Princess.’ Some of these names are blatantly made up and have no connection to botanical reality. Just another hint that plant collectors aren’t about the joy of growing. Rant over

Not if you like it and think it was worth it! I did try to sell one of mine for like $30 a few weeks ago and no one bought it but I think it’s ok to have plants that aren’t investments. It’s ok to buy something just because you like it. White princesses are way better than PPP’s though too. Grow way better.

With the prices decreasing and becoming available in big box stores, they are a great option now! I’ve also heard that some of the newer tissue culture batches are better so maybe whatever issue was happening got fixed.

I have 2. One my husband paid 110. And then I bought a second months later for 40.00 Both get those rusty brown spots. I have been treating with a fungicide and trying to see if it will make any difference 🤷‍♀️

I have 2 white princess and 1 pink princess PP is a bit more legy than the white but that actually depends on the light I also have the experience that, if the plant activates the growth on the left side (from my view) it will make a boring almost no pink leaf if it does on the right, the leaf has sectorial var. at least 1/3 and mostly half-moons but the most important thing about these Philodendrons: the new leaves get stuck ALL THE TIME! I raised the humidity in my bathroom to about 70% for some time, gently massaged warm water on the petiole and so on but nothing ever worked to make it come out smooth. I broke off so many leaves in an attempt to help unfurl.

It quickly fell out of favor here in Manila as well, maybe I'm just late in the plant game. But recently got a PPP for 200php (almost 4USD). I guess them falling out of favor is great for noobs like us.

This past summer I bought 2 at the 99 cent store for $12.99 each. They were in 3 inch pots . They are growing and some have pink marble and splotches. I’m glad I only paid $13 for them.🪴

@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet Yes, I have seen that video :) you covered the Green on Green well but there are more colours, green is just the most common. A sport can also be yellow and or white and look very similar to the "original" rare plant like an aurea for example, but it happened to be your 12 yr old monstera you bought for 5 bucks back then that suddenly throws that kind of leaf out. Tyler Thrasher has a website where he takes submissions of people finding these plants and he himself specialices in sport variegation! (www.monsterasports.com/) His collection is pretty big by now (tylerthrasher.com/plants) and he could even find reliable ways to figure out if a mutation will continue or is just a one-time thing for the plant. He has made even a sport hunting guide!

The only problem I had with it when I first got it was too much light which burnt the pink leaves. It wasn't even in direct sunlight, but bright light itself as harming the plant. I put it at my bottom rack and it's happy now pushing out more pink leaves. I saw someone selling a giant PPP as big as a small monstera borsigiana, and I'm hoping mine would grow as big one day. It's super pretty, it's almost like a pillow 😍😍

Fingers crossed I bought one a couple months ago online for like $50 shipped with like 5 leaves with good variegation and it's already pumped out at least 4 more leaves only one being green, the others having nice pink and the dark black leaves as they're newer. I'm really happy with it so far, no damage or struggle so far.

I saw one at walmart, it had two shoots, one had some pink, the other no pink. Ands that's still how they are. But its such a delicious deep green, almost a black, I just love both shoots. I like the pink parts, but if they vanish, I'll still keep it, I think the leaves are just lovely, pink or no pink and I don't have any problem growing it and man, I kill plants all the time! I paid $25, which is more than I paid for other plants, but I already knew that varigation could be spotty or not guaranteed, so its not a big deal to me. I have mine under a weak T5 grow light, it does super. No browns in it. I've never provided any humidity. I would never pay even a hundred dollars for a plant, I kill things too fast and there are far too many pretty plants out there to bother with something that costly. If my PPP had even been $50, I would never have bought it. Now my pink fittonia, that baby is gonna go in the garbage very soon, it's always looked sickly and I'm so not into babying a fussy plant.

Som time ago I did buy one big PPP and two little ones from holland. Then big one, and propagations from her never had these ugly brown patches. I like to think, it is due to better quality TC copy. But small ones do get the patches very often. So these will be out of the house. Regarding variegation, now the nurseries are sending out new variation, pink princess marble and the coloring on those is heavenly. I did get two little babies of those, and I am hoping, the colors will stay.

I hate I spent money on these. They are the most fickle plant, I can’t get it to look good for nothing. Its just been holding on for like 6 months now, its not even growing. The leaves are droopy. It wont die though, no idea whats up with it but I literally put them in a corner and pay very little attention to it. $300 wasted.

Some of the newer PPPs coming out seem to be… better? I’m glad yours is doing well. Strawberry Shakes are one of my faves, probably my favorite philodendron overall.

PPP is the worst mistake in my plants journey. Good thing is I only spend 2-digit to buy it and it grows easily. However, no pink comes out, they are only splashes. What a disappointment.

The demand issue? Yeah. It kills nice things. The resilience and needy issue? I don't agree. I water it, I put it in the window, it's great. Never a disease. My summer's hit 110F and the glass the leaves touch will burn. That's it. It got root bound, propagated without an issue, extra plants were given away, and one person complimented all the half-moon leaves. Always has a lot of pink in different patterns and ways in all of its leaves. It was $20 at a grocery store.

I LOVE my PPP! 😂 She is special, and so far, highly variegated. 🙏🏾 The new leaves do get stuck though and they are so hard not to pick (like when you were a kid and couldn’t stop picking a scab!) and it never goes well. 😅 SIDEBAR: what is that plant on your right side (our left) @plantfriendnextdoor!?! Hi! I think it’s probably the anthurium Nigrolaminum “Gigi”. Ecuagenera and Tropicals plants both sell them. Back when I bought it, it was still called Anthurium Versicolor sp. “Napo” though. Hope that helps!

I have a bunch of them and now and then I get a real nice leaf and I also had a cutting that reverted to a white princess and I know its possible because I never owned a WP. I got my $ back a long time ago I think I spent $225 so I don't mind selling them cheap. BTW all of mine look much better than costa farms reverted ones .

Ive been hearing good things about the newer batches from Home Depot. Sounds like they maybe solved some of the issues in some of the older TC batches so that’s great!

Hopefully everything goes well I'm also interested to see if U.V. helps or hurts the variegation since this will be the first variegated plant I'll be growing under these lights.

I feel like you should get way more views on your videos, because your information is clearly coming from a place of actual knowledge, or at least very careful and considered research. And I say this as someone with a science background, albeit not botany, but your ability to talk plant genetics in a way that the planty layperson can understand is 👍🏾 Love it Personally never been a fan of the PP, but I’m not really into pink or even colored or highly variegated plants anyway. I did bite the bullet and grab an inexpensive Birkin when they were all everyone could speak of, but I recently (finally!) sold it, at cost, because it was essentially fully reverted. I’m good on these finicky plants, when all I want to do is love them and see them thrive 😒

I’m sure that happened to some people but I was personally devastated that the plant I got in a trade with my friend was so difficult and that I wasn’t enjoying it. Then I bought another one that I thought had the characteristics I was looking for and got the same disappointing results… by the time this happened, prices on these were already at pretty reasonable levels. Honestly, I don’t think it really matters how much you pay, not getting what you thought you would get is still disappointing. I’ve had much better luck with things like strawberry shakes and white princesses and Florida beauties though so it’s all good.

🧬 are key imo - I still love this plant but have had problems with root rot , my first was the best from Indonesia and had amazing 3 different colors of pink variegaion I sold a large piece then the smaller portion died I was surprised. Then I bought another on Etsy and she’s struggling but did look beautiful when I got her if she makes which new growth is coming I think I’m good I have it in a pole . I still like this plant but the hype maybe over . I’m more excited to see my Dark Lord finally leaping after getting it so small . If I was buying one again this is what I tried - order a large mature leaf 🍃 start with that . I tried and they upgraded me to a small plants one I was. Like omg don’t have them available that’s not what I wanted ugh

What you see is what you get 100000% with pink princesses. It can surprise you with pink but if you don't see it on the petiole prob not gonna happen.

Pink Princess are not difficult to get good variegation on them. They need to mature to build up variegation. If your ppp isn't old enough for the bottom leaves to bleach to green and new leaves grow out of a cataphyle, you wont have good variegation, it need to build up. This plant is victim of it's succes and overpropagation.
