My favorite underrated genre of retro video game is virtual pinball games, especially games that try to enhance the pinball concept with larger and multiple tables, complex features, and progression.
@bigduke59022 ай бұрын
Growing up in the 8- and 16-bit eras, when the availability and variety of games was far more limited than today, it wasn't at all uncommon that I'd rent a different game in a completely genre every weekend of any given month. The limits on choice forced me to play anything and everything, even virtual pinball. Is that lost now that 15 games in every genre imaginable release every week and every possible appetite is well fed?

This kind of reminds me of the Taito pinball packs for my AtGames pinball machine. There's several of those tables where it's a normal table with flippers and ramps and alleys and whatnot and then every so often an enemy starts wandering on top of the play field and you score extra points for nailing them with the ball. Also reminds me of Metroid Pinball for the original DS - it also had enemies wandering the playfield and had a supplemental GBA cartridge that was just a force feedback motor. I get that those are later games but it's neat to see the concept as far back as the GBA.

It's interesting how the devs took bits of "House of the Dead" and "Typing of the Dead" and mixed them together into a pinball game, of all things. Everything I've seen about the GBA makes it look as if "throw something at the wall and see what sticks" were a console ideology, especially compared to other systems out at the time. I'm adding my "please do more GBA games" plea to the list. I'm near your age, but I skipped the GBA entirely due to going without the internet during the years of its initial release and not knowing a thing about it until a relative showed up with the OG GBA one day. I embraced the DS with a passion that no other post-2000 game system has ever reached for me, but the GBA was one of those vague systems that I had little connection with and am still clueless about.

Mentioning that there are things real pinball tables can't do got me thinking about the potential of a pinball table designed around AR where the top case is smart glass and projects things on to the table for the pinball to hit. That's probably too expensive to be viable but would be neat.

The GBA has a lot of shovelware games, as all of Nintendo's handheld systems do. The system has a library of like 1500+ games and it still has a lot of good stuff for it. If you like Pinball of the Dead, then you also need to get around to Sonic Pinball Party. Which really just plays like Pinball of the Dead with Sonic, Nights and Samba De Amigo themed pinball tables.

You mentioned "If these tables were real ..." which made me wonder how big a table would have to be to host interactive holographic 3D enemies on the playing field. Decades ago, I remember the last big pinball innovation (not that I keep up with the tech) was incorporating a screen on the play field at the top of the board. The original big mechanical tables will always be classic, so is this idea a way to evolve the tech if a company cared to try it out?

If I had known about this back then it I might have passed on it too unless I could have gotten it cheap in the bargain bin. I never bought pin ball video games back in the day because I didn't think I would like them. Pinball is one of those things that just didn't seem like fun in video game form. For some reason though, I've started to reconsider that view. I be checking this out the next time I want to try the genre.

Spooky season is NEVER over!!! But I'm wondering if you could do the little figures in a real pinball game. I can see using hologram tech to do it. It'd probably look a bit like the chess game in Star Wars IV: A New Hope. What with the pinball board being a sealed environment you could probably have some sort of gas or vapor to project it on. I'm not saying it would practical or cheap, but I bet it would be possible.
