Somalia has long been one of the world's most divided nations.
Government leaders in Mogadishu have struggled for decades to assert authority in many parts of the country.
The power vacuum has left Somalis with little help as they suffer from drought, famine and armed groups.
Now, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called a meeting of regional leaders aiming to confront the challenges.
So what are the main obstacles preventing the country from coming together?
And can they be overcome?
Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom
Guests:
Abdi Ismail Samatar, Somali Senator for Somaliland.
Afyare Elmi, Research Professor, City University of Mogadishu.
Omar Mahmood, Senior Analyst for Eastern Africa, International Crisis Group.

Somalia went through a lot in the past 30 years, including war, famine and other problems. We must move forwards as a nation though it is apparent that some regions are less willing to work together than others, or else we will take many steps back. We cant look away from our problems and we need to discuss things to deal with it.

I seriously doubt you two are even Somalis just here to spread hate and misinformation. Somalis are one tribe with one religion, language, culture etc. Somalis always aid each other when calamities hit. For example the so called break away region of somaliland biggest market burned down and Somalis all over including the diaspora started raising funds to help ordinary Somalis whose livelihoods were destroyed. It’s our politicians funded and backed by foreigners that make us look disunited than we actually are.

Like stated in the discussion. Somalian unity can be achieved by focusing on a handful of common interests amongst ALL SOMALIS. Food security, infrastructure development, health security, education, anti-corruption, security in general. Intelligent leadership would rally around these topics. Somalia has the potential to become on of east africa's power houses in the upcoming decades. Why? Here are some reasons... 1) Coastal key geographical access to growing markets alongside the BRICS+ main routes. (Asia-Africa). 2) Demographics 3) Highly educated diaspora in various sectors like IT, economics, health (Knowledge and Skills Transfer). 4) Numerous natural resources such as iron ore, uranium, copper, tin, bauxite, gypsum, salt, and natural gas and oil. 5) Untapped potential for tourism. Let me just stop here. The list goes on btw. Unstability and internal conflicts perhibit the manifestation of a new golden somali era. Archaic clan rivalry amongst self centered "leaders" is something to be left in the past if Somalia really wants a prosperous future for ALL SOMALIS. Africas problem with weak and corrupt leadership doesn't exclude Somalia but we have seen that multiethnical nations can grow and change course effectively. Several african nations have shown that in the past. A good recent example would be the west african coastal country of Senegal. The predominantly muslim nation is multiethnic (Wolof, Pulaar, Sereer, Mandinka, Jola, Soninke and more). Around the same population like Somalia they now democratically elected a 44 year old former tax inspector who openly published his assets (His bank accounts hold roughly $6,600) beforehand. The election itself went peaceful and the results have been accepted by all participating parties. Current economic growth rate around 8,5 %. Guess what they don't have? Clan rivalry and tribal partisanship. Somalia is blocked by self induced hardheadedness and backward sectarianism. The moment these problems dissolve the horn of africa will see another golden era. Insha'Allah. Salaan my beloved brothers and sisters. ❤

The president and his team felt that the unity of the country is moving in a dangerous moments. That is why the president is enthusiastic to complete the constitution, even if the process is not complete as they are claiming amendment can be done latter. The problem here is that some people want the continuation of 4.5 selection and scare of that the powers of the states will be limited.

We all were one Somali until the British broke us up. My father is from the Isaaq tribe in Somaliland. Our great poet and warrior Hassan fought the British and prevented them from making Somalis slaves as they did in West Africa. We fought the Portuguese to, and all other invaders. We are Somalis it is the blood line even though we came from different Tribes that has broken up into clans. We have been fighting for centuries petty of us over land that is already ours. The land belongs to all Somalis and Somalis only. My people are 200 years behind they think they are still fighting with swords. Now we have three armies with guns and bombs, pirates and planes. We are capable of wiping each other out for good. The British were wrong, Barre was wrong, and the killing of civilians were wrong. The splitting us up is wrong. All Somalis should be independent and help our country grow strong, rich and peaceful. We may have a love and ancient hatred for each other, from centuries past. That can only change for the better in time. The question is when? It is now 2024, I feel this year or 2025 this epic saga, this generational conflict will climax, this old story will end for the better or worst. However, we do have to live on the same land, and share it because, it is not yours, mine it' is ours. Separating and telling Somalis they are not Punt Lander's or Somalilander's or Somali, and they can't go here or there is wrong. Selling our land to non Somalis is wrong, and it is stealing from the Somali people. The Ethiopian MOU deal with Somaliland hasn't gone through as of yet, and if Ethiopia insist on stealing or invading our land it will be war. Honor Hassan and Huru/Horus and come together and live and let live in peace. You can't run or hide from your blood line. We can't deny that we are all Somalis. Although we embrace Allah, but we come from the god of the underworld Pluto, who has never left us. We have been living on his dark side lets change for the better, and live on his bright side moving forward. I burn a candle to honor Hassan and Huru/Horus my and our ancestors every night. Peace!

Most speakers are correct, but it would be better to invite people with different opinions who view the constitution positively. Somalia is a country of small tribes, where each tribe lives in its own territory. The first problem is that Somalia's federal system has never worked, since there are no collective tribes that can form a regional government.

No nation of the planet would willingly forsake 1/4 of their territory. If they want to be independent so badly they should fight a war of succession but they won’t simply because the majority don’t want to kill kin over some artificial colonial boundary. Go to Berbera, Go to Burco even parts of Hargeisa most people ain’t with this disease of division. They only people that want division are those who will gain the most from it financially, they want to line their pockets by exploiting their people. I’m just glad nobody allowed mining and fracking to take place when we were much more unstable and vulnerable position.

The video features a valuable discussion with knowledgeable experts, but there are a couple of aspects that could be enhanced. First, the use of older and unnecessary clips by Al Jazeera doesn't fully capture the current state of Somalia. While challenges persist, there are positive developments that could have been showcased for a more balanced perspective. Additionally, the absence of a pro-federal government participant in the discussion creates a bias, limiting diverse viewpoints on governmental strategies and decisions. Including a broader range of perspectives would have enriched the conversation and promoted fairness.

Hassan is not a tribal leader. He steals from Hawiye all the time. He can't steal from Puntland and other sbecause he can't control them. Most of his investments come from stealing SNA and traveling allowance (Hawiye people taxes). Don't misunderstand here. If an election was held today in Mogadishu Sharif or Farmaajo would win as they are the most honest politicians.,

Last 33 years Somalia suffer from western, neighbouring countries and Some gulf countries's direct Political interventions with the help of some so-called Somali Politicians who always benefit from the distribution and destabilisation of their own country, Also Somali nomadic culture of killing each other for hundreds of years is part of the problems This time is worst because most of uneducated people are in both houses of the parliament, ministers and other government sectors, We are a way too far from becoming stable and stronger Somali same as before 1991.

The "Senator" from Somaliland accuses politicians of being power mongers. Yet he calls himself a "senator" and claims to talk out of "authority." Who elected him? Can he even go to Somaliland? Whom is he deceiving? He talks good English by a Somali standard, and I will give him that. May be it is because his Senatorial office is in Minneapolis 😅

First thing first : somali federalism to function properly and without paralysis like any other international system based on national government based on constitutional federalism in the world, there must be defined separation of powers and jurisdictions over few things in the federal entity versus regional entities. Anything related to foreign policy issues, defense and national security issues plus all other things related to finance and monetary system should be the under sole jurdiction of federal level. Everything else is negotiable. There shouldn't be an imaginary and cherry-picking of here and there things without fixed rule.

Somalia needed to be dismantled as a four different small countries like Khalij and they can evolve from there, because of selfishness by the positions. Somaliland is already gone for good, but the rest are not ready to be govern by demococarcy and free election. Imagine up til now they do not want to accept one vote one man. They buy their vote by money. This is not the way that you can govern a country. The positions are very corrupt and need to be addressed. I'm Somalian who like to help Somalians

Once again Al Jazeera inviting Crisis group to talk about Somali affairs. We have scholars and experts of Somali origin and you keep inviting Matt and his Crisis group who disseminate disinformation about Somalia. Ethiopia was and is never a security partner. Secondly, I'm glad Afyare Elmi finally woke up and sees that having these clan fiefdoms is not good and can easily be taken over by the likes of Ethiopia. He has defended this in the past, write paper and worked for HIP think tank. If his sudden change of heart is sincere or not, I'm glad he is speaking it now. Lastly, professor Samatar for all the intellectual prowess you possess you choose to be nothing more but an opposition with no real tangible solutions. I agree with you that HSM is nothing more but a clan obsessed mafia trying to get more power. But when you had someone who was advocating for Somali unity and bringing this renegade so called FMS under the federal government, you acted petulant and called him named. You sided with HSM when any normal person could see, with all the flaws Farmaajo had, HSM was never the answer. And you sided with him, now you are against him? Why so shoreside? Somalis don't have long term vision, just current grievance. Shame
Somalia gave its coastline away, here's why it matters
