That color palette tho, this piece is fucking gorgeous! I totally agree with your app price point of view, when I bought my iPad Pro 12.9 I just factored the price of procreate into the price of buying the iPad and saved up. Then when wanting to get into pixel art I looked here for which apps purely for just names of apps to try, I think I may have spent a single evening watching reviews and such then said hell with it and bought pixaki. I ended up eating ramen and lettuce for a week but was fine and having a blast while my initial excitement lasted. Art is so therapeutic and calming to me and I am so grateful to be able to snuggle up on the couch in soft blankets and create art.

Me on the other hand, I have Adobe CC subscription for design stuff. I've been considering to buy Procreate for so long. It feels redundant but at the same time I feel it might improve my exp. So I keep using what I have but looking at artists enjoying Procreate, I feel like to jump in the ship.

Thanks for art Mikko 😊! Totally agree that the tool is not the most important part of the process. You does not need it at all, because as you always say, having fun in the process is important and it's obvious that you have a lot of fun with procreate. But , just in case it didn't cross your mind, Affinity Designer for iPad, using the pixel persona of the app, may be close to Photoshop for pixel art. You also have Affinity Photo, but I tend to like more Designer, even if you do not consider using the vector side of the app, which can be useful anyway. Hope is useful🙂

I also use Procreate to make the assets for my game. It is ok do draw pixel art on it but the selection tool also selects subpixels and makes them transparent and it does not feel good at all. They also do not have any plans to support pixel art as they stated "this is a drawing/illustration app". Yet they will support 3D model painting with the new M1 chip :(
@angrymikko3 жыл бұрын
I can't comment on the 3d stuff because I don't have access to the beta of the new update. I do wonder if it's something I would use over substance painter because I have it now as a part of my creative cloud subscription. Any 3d assets I make are always done on this PC so there would have to be something in the 3d painting that's better than in substance painter for me to go through the extra step of switching from desktop to iPad. Hard to say before I've tried it but the convenience of having a portable tablet to use for texture painting just might be enough of a reason. Seems like a huge feature compared to something like a pixel pencil though but it might be more interesting for the majority of people doing illustration on that app. I don't have an opinion of this either way. My favourite thing about procreate is that the UI is clean and it's not bloated with features. Yet.☝🏻
@zuljaras3 жыл бұрын
@@angrymikko That is true but they could at least add as an option in the drawing assist to have the select tool snap to a grid made in the drawing assist. This is the only thing missing for making pixel art easier on Procreate.

I find it almost a bit philosophical. It's said often in the community that art is problem-solving and that by having limitations you have more problems that need more creative solutions. That same line of logic is why "digital art" can sometimes be demonized as not being art. You have access to ALL colors! You have access to unlimited layers, erasing, and undoing. You only have to make it once and can sell a million copies! Yet, I believe that Digital art is undeniably art. And I think it's because when some creative barriers or problems are broken down, they are replaced by others. Such as your search for the program that has it all mentioned in this video. You have a vision in mind, you see the barrier that is your programs, and you choose to utilize both in order to overcome it. I think the artists of today struggle not with not having enough problems to encounter while creating, and now must personally creating problems they must overcome in order to make their art more creative. People set limitations on themselves, do challenges like one layer or monochrome, etc in order to artificially create these. Doing a specific style of art, such as Pixel art, has so many restrictions and barriers to overcome that make it necessary to be so creative to make something as beautiful as this piece you have made! Maybe the perfect art platform will never exist, and that is okay.

Also not available for ios so it's not included in here. BUT I have used Hexels and I do think it's a neat program for desktop users. I wouldn't recommend it for pixel art because the UI is a bit cumbersome compared to aseprite or PS but Hexels has it's own unique features for geometric art that it does really well. I have few pieces in my gallery that were done with Hexels but they're not pixel art they're vectors exported out of Hexels to illustrator.

I hope people see this video and receive the message.
