Is progress possible 18 months after a stroke or brain injury?

Should you continue to do rehab after 18 months? If so, why? Many health care professionals suggest that 18 months after a stroke or brain injury progress is not possible. What if those health care professionals are wrong? The idea that those healthcare professionals are misinterpreting out-dated research is more than possible, it is highly probable. Here more about why I think you might not be represented in those statistics. Beyond that, why stopping your home exercise routine and/or formal physical therapy is a bad idea.

How long before you can drive?
@jond4014
@jond4014 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't take too long. Just gotta deal with the dmv they should've sent you paperwork about getting your license back. You filloutthat paperworkand send it in and they'll give you an appointment with the driver safety officer who will interview you and go over the process. Eventually can take the written test and get a driver's permit but you can only drive with a licensed driving rehab instructor. Then once you feel comfortable driving you schedule the driving test and if you pass, you're good to go.. that's how I did it here in california anyway.... It's definitely quite a process but doable.

After my stroke while still in the ICU, the neurologist told my husband that if I survived, I would be a vegetable. I am here to tell everyone, 3 years post stroke, I am walking, talking (with a few problems), driving, and thinking for myself! It is all about motivation! How dare you tell me I can't do something! Your experience is similar to mine. I had a stroke after surgery to remove growth around my carotid artery. I spent 4 weeks in coma only to have lungs collapsed. I have worked very hard to gain some of my life back. I can walk without a cane, but slowly. Only reason I take my cane to people are patient with my slow pace. Now, I'm working to get my hand back, my shoulder and tricep-bicep balance is there now.my moto is to never give up.

@@katelynlee574 sure, i mainly focus on stretching most of the afected joints and facilitating mobility, the stretching part is actually very important, since it reduces pain, and improves the mobility excersices, now i am more advanced with my patient and i actually make him use his affected side, but it is hard because he always starts requiring support on his limbs or i end up going back to stretching, it depends and it takes time but he eventually ends up needing less support the more he practice an exercise

Hubby had stroke 5 years ago. He continues to improve by being supported by professional therapists ie. Speech therapist, Occupational Therapist, Neuro Physio, Physio, Community Care Group inclusion, Men's Shed participant. Without these supports, less improvement as his self motivation is driven by external supports and involvement. Access and avilability to these supports continues to change. Keep asking, keep looking, keep trying, keep doing, keep exploring ideas. Use technology to aid recovery. Headphones with mic, mini 5 sec physio video clips. How fantastic and motivating... I find Tara is a great motivator and provides relevant and appropriate neuro physio exercises. Thank you..

@@opeyemialuko7948 Dr Tobias videos are really good. I look through them then note the minute mark to get to the relevant point of the clip where hubby can follow. He has difficulty with comprehension. Also if you can include an exercise ie I get hubby to wipe the dinner table with both hands on cloth, then dry it. He's helping and exercising independently. Keep asking your local health services for support, link in with relevant charities, Heart Foundation, Acquired Brain Injury, Wheelchair Assoc. They have expertise to support both of you and your family. Take care of yourself, eat well, rest well. All the best. Jacqui

🌞😃🌞 Dr Tara, you are so right!!!!! How can anybody say such a thing!!!! Recovery is a lifelong journey. And steps of recovery build on each other. There is no walking without training leg lift and no grabbing before thumb spastic is under control, just to mention two.... I change my PTs every 9 months because I get bored with their program and want to learn new things. One of them told me that spastics do never go away in her experience. That is ridiculous!! I left her after two sessions. My Spastics is gone 80 Percent through constant stretching. And now after 28 months after being half dead, half side limb and drastic spastic, I am able to learn and start things that were unthinkable 10 months ago!!!!!!! And I am convinced that in 2 years I will be able to walk outside and stand on a golf course. Not possible now, but I am on track. So don't EVER let anybody tell you that there is no improvement possible. That is humiliating, wrong and damaging. Always fight for your recovery, educate yourself and listen to your body. Every exercise counts and I am beyond thankful to Dr. Tara for her efforts and her community. 💛🙏💛

One thing I tell other stroke survivors is to convince your caregivers to let you learn hope to do things for your self. When I go shopping on my own I get one of those small carts to ship with as long as I can walk I refuse to use the electric carts. I’d rather they be there for people who need them. And I learned quickly. If I ever feeling unsteady if I touch a shelf with a couple fingers it seems to reset my brain. And I tell survivors to put a step counter counter to the phone’s to keep track of my progress. I can remover in rehab 400 steps was a lot.

Hey dr. T. Happy new year to you and fellow viewers. I was told best chance of recovery was within 6 months due to status of penumbra. Sadly, I was unable to sleep properly for first year due to uncontrollable clonus, so any e exercise I did; did not register deep in my brain to become natural. However, once I got that under control(one year), I started improving relatively fast. But, as time is passing, the rate of progress has become slower, even to the extent of discouragement. It does happen even after. So, I advise my fellow viewers to not get discouraged. Keep plugging along. It does improve even after 5 year, but slowly.

If I stand still, I drift. My affected side is my left side. I just recently had my 5th stroke and my left side is back to square one with being so weak and struggling again with walking and such. As many have already said, that time limit does not exist, maybe only the speed of progress has anything to do with it, but I completely agree with Dr. Tara, it is a very complex process and each patient reacts differently. The brain is very adaptable and it is just a matter of personal motivation and the way the process is performed, great progress is possible, true the path is very slow but perseverance pays off. I testify to this by my own example, after 4 years with the great help of Dr. Tara's video I have progressed a lot. I have worked with many therapists, but Dr. Tara has invaluable knowledge and experience, I have not seen better, I will be grateful to her for the rest of my life. Never give up.

So don't focus me on what I can't do, but tell me what I can be doing has been my refrain to a few therapists over the years. I am 8 years post stroke and still relearning how to do things. My goal for 2021: Walk without glute pain. I'm working with my PCP toward getting a diagnosis. Once we have that then we'll be able to determine appropriate corrective action. FWIW, my working theory is arthritis may be the culprit. We shall see. First order of business: diagnosis!
