I am fairly advanced in hand-opening, but I have have found play dough (plasticene) very beneficial. One can squeeze it a bit like a stress ball, but then you have to move it sideways with thumb and fingers, so it promotes a variety of finger movements which is good, and it feels quite nice as a texture. And it is not very expensive!

Thanks for the clarification Tara, expert advice is always valuable. Finger and hand movements are a problem because they are only possible when the upper arm and forearm are functioning. I respect the exercises shown, but it is important to use the hand as much as possible, mentally, passively and actively. Have a nice week.

Hey Tony, occupational therapist in neurological rehabilitation here: Well it totally depends, if the errors in writing are caused by a cognitive or physical/neurological disorder. I just assume that you might need an Idea for an exercise adressing physical or neurological issues. First of all, positioning the body is key in preparing the writing movement. It's hard to move your limb easily if your body has no stability. Check for a position where your arm can rest easy without having any stabilizing function for the rest of the body (your non-writing hand/arm can be oc used to further stabilise your body). If your hand is ready and free to move, try some swing and tracing exercises first, exercise sheets are available online or for sale. You can even take a sheet of paper and try to reproduce simple shapes, just start with simple lines horizontal, vertical and diagonal, add dots, circles or squares later on. Then create patterns consisting of these different shapes. If the quality of the results are getting higher, try the alphabet, starting with letters with more straight lines like M, W, T, H and so on, later swung lines like R, B, S, D... Then put these letters together in simple words like mum, bob or take your first name (as it is most often the first word we seek to learn how to write as a child). Finally you will be combining all the further steps together and start practicing in writing sentences. It's a matter of weeks for some, several months for the other, depending on the severity of the writing issues. For some even some years, but the cool thing is: our brain is continuously rewiring itself, even in higher ages and especially in younger ages. I know it's just a random comment under a video and it's kinda brief especially for such a complex movement, but I hope this might give you (or you, who is reading this comment right now) some ideas how you can improve your writing after a neurological incident. Take care, have a successful recovery and take your time, you are worth it. Cheers from Germany, Martin

When I bend my wrist, my fingers loosen up, when I straighten my wrist, the fingers close. When I try to concentrate to open my hand, the fingers try to close instead. I will keep trying.

My son is still weak from his left side due to a gunshot wound to the head 8 years ago, doesn’t have his balance and is able to walk with my assistance, my question is will he still be able to get function after so much time, there is little movement to his left arm. I have been taking him to rehab & when I can to the gym throughout these years, but has not made progress to his arm. Has a lot of tone to his left side. I’ve been watching your channel for the past hour & want to start these exercises.

Wife’s stroke was two years ago. She’s been paralyzed on the left side since. No feeling but her hand and arm go crazy all the time. So she can’t control them. It’s been three days ago now and she seems to have gotten all feeling back in her left side most of it is pain but she still cannot control Her arm or leg. So what gives ?. I thought if the feeling came back she would be able to control them. Just really wondering what to expect from now is this a good sign or another false hope? Really love your videos and thank you in advance for any advice or information you give us.

Tara, my occupational therapist said that I need Botox in my thumb to release pressure because my thumb it is inside my hand and it’s supposed to be outward. I am going to try this, first. I had suffered a stroke 6 years ago and this right hand and wrist is difficult. I see that the arm and the shoulder completes the wrist and the hand.. duh, do you have anything with the shoulder video? so I can do it in the complete order.
