Scrape, Sand, Strip, Repeat! That's the name of the game in this no-paint Fable as we take off the most drippy, shiny, and much-too-dark finish I've seen in awhile. What we find underneath is impressive...and what's an even bigger shocker is how I finish this piece...and how much I absolutely love it! I guess the only question is; will the customers??

This beautiful project allows the quality of the natural wood to show through. It also demonstrates to flippers that the answer is not always paint. A person, whom I know well, once stripped an 1890 coal black Steinway upright piano. Underneath the finish (which I’m told was very “in” at the turn of the century) was natural rosewood. It stands proudly in our living room in its natural glory.

"Cognac-colored" is right! And just like cognac, it goes down warm and smooth. I LOVE IT! I have to say, what with Madame putting on sequined boots at the beginning, I thought you were going to change the feet. But I'm glad you didn't. I also thought you might put an amazon carton on as backing. Poetic justice LOL.

I have this 1940s desk secretary that has caused great angst because, while it’s in decent shape, the writing surface is pitted and the the entire piece is DARK like your end table. I have gone back and forth between painting the reddish mahogany or just stripping it. Maybe your re-do with scraping, sanding and hemp oil is the way to go. You really did a great job! 😊

Hi! I think this came out beautifully! I love the warmth that this process gave it. So much better than the original look. Lots of work to get it looking so good, that I think you may have underpriced it. It was so nice to see you use the small tools to get into the crevices. So many people skip that step, but it makes the piece look so much better and it says that the person working on it truly appreciates the quality of the piece. Thank you so much!

Oh Andy this piece turned out stunning! It sure was a LOT of work. I doubt I’d be up for it because of the stripper. What a mess I’d make lol. You truly have such a good eye for the before and after. I’m seeing a piece of furniture that most would pass up on. Instead you see it’s beautiful possibility. I loved the wallpaper and leaving the wood in its natural state by using hemp oil. It’s just amazing how you transform furniture into works of art. I look forward to watching you and seeing what you’ll do each week. I know it will be awesome…But so is your channel Andy! Hi,Andy. I love natural wood grains and colours and I like how you have used natural products to clean, colour, protect and seal the REAL wood ( its hard to get solid wood...its mostly that plastic coated sawdust and glue junk). I' m glad that you try new products to see how they work out in real life ( not " Hollywood's " tricks of the camera) I have a vintage/ antique magazine rack/ table that I've sanded down to the natural wood. It must have had 15 coats of that old, brown Victorian paint on it plus the iron coated shellac....lol Its been standing "naked" for over a year now while I try to think of a good beauty treatment for her. I've no clue what kind of wood was used....possibly heart wood oak for the top....so tough that 80 grit automotive sandpaper never marked her top! I'm not sure of the type of wood used for the base...it was cut in a different direction and shows beautiful swirls of grain. The piece only cost me $15 at a second hand store. I have been pondering what to do with her. I want to highlight the beautiful top....which will need to be sealed to protect it from water and coffee( she is my bedside table). I was thinking about whitewashing the underside of the top with a nice cream colour and using a "Navaho" red for the base( perhaps also whitewashed). I have some pictures of the piece( before and after sanding) that I could share with you. I would value your suggestions, please. I also have a '50's ? Dresser with mirror as well as a very abused second hand hall table( she held plants on her for sometime and has water damage) I have an idea about the dresser finishing, but no plans for the hall table ( which will continue to hold plants, etc) For back ground information; I started to watch your channel when I was off work for reconstructive hand surgery( both hands in turn) and bored out of my mind...LOL.

Wow Wendy, thanks so much for sharing this! If you'd like to send me pictures, probably best to message me over on Instagram. And oh my goodness - it sounds like you'v been through the wringer! My wife and I just restored an 1840s home. We are now hunting for peaces to restore to furnish her. This red would be ideal. All our wood trim is red oak and our floors once stripped will be the same. Part of her charm is the burn marks on the sitting room floor from the parlour stove. We found a parlour stove but I need to rebuild it. Next I'm restoring a 5ft x 8ft tall stained glass between the sitting room and dinning room. Thanks it nice to see other folks work.

This came out so well. I think the choice to not paint was a great one - this piece is kind of one of those 'world traveler' kind of pieces that could have been made here or abroad and is exciting enough without paint - though I don't doubt for a second you couldn't come up with a delectable painted look for it! It would also look good with weird antiques etc.. I love the hemp oil over poly choice.

Wherever possible depending on the condition of a piece I always try to bring it back to the simple beauty of natural wood with an oil or wax, paint is great for allowing the creative juices to flow and making statement pieces, however it lacks depth and gets old as fast as the latest trend, I'd be happy to see more beautiful work like this become fashonable

Very pretty! I probably would have coated it in poly, but I can definitely see the appeal in a more natural finish, as well. Also, my daughter and I (and possibly her boyfriend) are going to be working on our first furniture flip soon! A pair of solid wood side tables that a friend gave me for free. They weigh a ton, and have a thick layer of grey paint on them. Haven't decided what to do with them yet. Going to wait until they're stripped. Wish us luck!🙂

Love your channel! Love what you did with this table. The paper on the backboard is beautiful! Is the table mohagony? Love how your videos provide all the details that went into your refinishings and then provide the details on the costs and what you will list it for. Most don't do that. I first started watching you because your fables caught my eye! You are an all around talent!

I completely love it! The wood looks like tiger wood (not to be confused with Tiger Woods) 🤣 I'm gonna have to get some of that hemp oil for my next project. 🤔 Next time you have to do a lot of sanding and stripping you should let Tacky Top Coat handle it. 🤣 After all, he's the one who sticks around long after he's worn out his welcome! Great job, Andy! Thanks for another fun fable. 🤟
