Absolutely. Just look at the current attempts to face normal threats of life (Co-vid not to mention it). The system is endorcing fear above ratio and is taking away the mere motivation to get up in the morning. Fear is a far worse ennemy than any virus or danger out there. It makes people behave aggressively and stupidly. Danger is the bloody salt of this life.

Risk is ok, you know you are living, spot on Hugo!! Situational awareness in your daily life mitigates risk. Planning and training mitigates risk. PACE mitigates risk. Don't blindly step out into traffic and you won't need Mom's leash on you. Have a great race! ⛵🗺️

My son used to complain I would still hold his hand when crossing a road and he was 10 though I had stopped with my daughter at around 6, so I explained to him that it's not his age but his awareness, he would cross the road without looking if I didn't hold him where as she at the same age would look at what was happening around her, I told him he needed to show me he could be trusted to check if it's safe to cross if he didn't want his hand held when crossing the road he needed to to show me he could take responsibility in checking for himself. I know this was a small example but it shows well that not only you should learn to asses the risks for yourself but as parents you should train your children to do the same.

I think everyone who singlehanded sails learns these things. I did. And I always wear my leash unless becalmed. Never a life jacket - who's gonna save me if I fall overboard? A lifejacket is pointless, but assessing and being ready for all risks is essential.

Great story and advice. As a sailor I identify risk, train for risk, plan for mitigating it and move on. What I love about the format of racing you are participating in is the removal of all the gadgets and focus instead on skill. I started ocean racing before GPS and plotters and loved developing the skills. Fair winds.

The thing about pushing boundaries is that it's all ok til it all goes wrong. That's the lesson you eventually learn when you take risks. It's the wisdom of age and experience, often mistaken for fear by those yet to learn it

Thanks Hugo. You and Erik Aandreraa have inspired me to try my first solo 24 hour passage travelling south from Sydney in the Tasman Sea in Australia. Risk can be managed, but you don't know what you don't know. I forgot it was whale migration season and at night I could hear and smell the whales blowing for air as I was being belted by 25-30 knt winds on a close reach. Scared? Hell yes... But came out the other side tougher, more experienced and wiser! Thank you for your inspirational videos!

Marc

Most people are afraid of the risk to succeed in life fearing death or failure due to fear and one’s ego. That’s a great essay of risk and satirical that you used the calm conditions to bolster your opinion on the matter. My friends and family don’t understand why I walked away from a comfortable life to sail a boat. They don’t understand there is more to life if you step out of the box. Now go kick some ass on that Mini!

As my profile pic shows the sport of my choice before I started to sail was motorcycle racing. High risk for sure but we know them and do what we can to reduce them. Ultimately, I feel safer on a race track than I would riding a motorcycle to work. At the same time we cannot eliminate every risk out of our lives. I always think of the quote "why tiptoe through life to arrive safely at death". (anon)

Good viewpoint on "risk".When I was younger I was talked out of some things for the risk/impossibility of the matter. Please don't let peoples fear dictate your life and become more cautious when their words of concern are their own fear or from frenemies who don't want to see you happy. What they don't want for themselves they don't want for others.I've never seen you be reckless in any way. That side would come out in your vids.Good luck on the race if it's not over yet.Bye

Risk? Its explicitly a lyrical metaphorical figure of speech. As a climber, you see the snow on the ridge ready to form an avalanche, you know well that if you go at night - the "risk" of avalanche is lower than during midday melting of the base. But there are hundreds of examples when alpinists went at night and still got hit by an avalanche. It is very misguiding to tell younger people that one can "manage risk"... it is not true, you are either being lucky or not on a given day of your life. Good climbers are those who almost never think about "risk" but rather think of safety. E.g. if i climb that ridge and shit starts happening above, where can i divert and how fast? Do i have my avalanche cord released? How do we split in pairs and how far should we be while climbing? Do i have the avalanche beacon? Does each pair have avalanche rods? If one of us breaks a limb how do we evacuate him? etc. etc. So the best advice: think not of "risk" but of "safety". Especialy during pandemic. Wear a mask, wear gloves, social distance, stay aware of your surroundings. It takes a lot of effort to be bright young smart safe human!

Not that I'm not concerned about risk, well I am! I'm living in my mostly risk free oasis as you called it. No real worries. But where you risk most in this little video and perhaps most of your sailings, is perhaps your menu 😀 Risk is often defined as the product of possibility and consequence. Consequence is in this definition considered as those negative outcomes there might be from a certain activity. Perhaps something's wrong and aspect of life should be included by being subtracted from the consequences. r = c •p - gb • 1 / p, Where: r = risk c = consequence (in case of certain outcomes eg. capsizing) gb = gained benefits (of life) p = probability of consequences to occur
