Is Rivian R2 Worth 45k? My First Thoughts!

Waiting patiently for my mine but in the meantime jumped on the Kia EV9 lease deal. It feels a lot like the R2. Kia is a force to be reckoned with! I think in 3 years R2 will be out and will either say goodbye to EV9 or decide to own 2 EVs.

I don’t think it is an off-road focussed vehicle, although they may bring out a more adventurous trim level down the road. The R2 is very promising! I have a reservation for both the R2 and the Scout Traveler. I’m still trying to decide which one I want to go with. I love my R1T but I’m just not a truck person and don’t need a three row. However the Scout is going to come with CarPlay & has an option for the gas range extender. I’ll have a year and a half at least to make up my mind.

Wow! Thanks for sharing! Both are very cool vehicles. The R2 is a bit smaller and by going full EV you won’t have to worry about servicing and maintaining 2 drivetrains. If you get a chance, hop into a new R1S and play with the UI software. I’m sure you’ll find it superior CarPlay in many ways. Good question. Exterior would be a slightly bigger than a Bronco Sport however, being an EV there is significantly more room inside as the floor is flat and the firewall is more forward than a gas vehicle because there is no engine. The anticipated arrival time of the R3X could coincide nicely with replacing my nearly 10 year old Kia Soul EV+. The hot hatch style is much more interesting to me than yet another SUV or pickup (though Rivian has a very nice design). Curious about the other color ways the R3X will be available in.

Do you believe r1s owners will start to question if their vehicle is worth the premium? When looking at the model y and model x I just couldn’t see why the X is 30-40k more.

Good question! I personally do not think so. There are so many metrics that come into play when comparing two different vehicle classes. A Model Y vs Model X is a remarkable difference in vehicle experience. The ride alone is light years apart, interior space, features, performance, tow capacity, storage options, technology differences all add up to a substantial gap between models. While there will be some who will decide to “downgrade” (for the lack of a better word) there Wii be more than enough people that chose the R1S because that midsize 3 row market is 2nd only to pickups in sales.

For me I’m just tall and prefer the space of a larger vehicle. if I can have a somewhat similar experience in a 40k cheaper vehicle then I’m all for it. I’m just not sure how much better an r1 would be to this if size was out of the equation

Seems kind of obvious when you see it, make a boxy SUV of the size that most people buy. The form factor seems almost perfect. I think it will most likely be a matter of getting the price and reliability right because they have a good design. I'm leery of new EV models, so I wouldn't be buying this when it first comes out. One interesting element is the now even more powerful Musk and what he'll do to eliminate the competition. He doesn't seem to be interested in coming out with new models so I'm guessing he'll use other methods to beat the competition.

Certainly an exciting vehicle. What makes the R2 unique versus other brands is the fact that electric vehicles is all they do. Rivian is 100% invested and focussed on creating the best electric vehicles that they possibly can. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for legacy automotive companies. As far as competition for Tesla, Rivian is not it. The true competition is the 90+% of market share sure that is comprised of gasoline & diesel vehicles. Rivian needs to get its reliability up before they're ever going to be a contender. I had an R1T and it was by far the worst vehicle ever. Countless failures, across multiple different systems (suspension, HVAC, HV battery, etc etc). The forums haven't been kind to the GEN2 products either, so it doesn't seem like they've fixed their issues yet. I have one of these on order, but until they prove themselves better, I'll be a pass.

Thanks for sharing Mitch! Let’s not forget that Legacy Automakers have been manufacturing vehicles for a century and still have their fair share of quality issues. July 2024 Toyota and Lexus recalled 100,000+ vehicles for complete engine failure and require full long-block replacement, and this is a company who has their praises sang over quality and reliability. I have spoken at length with many Rivian reps and they are aware and acting on those issues. As the company grows the issues will subside. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts. The R3X is going to be the #1 volume Rivian if production can meet demand. The R2 is 90% unoriginal. It’s an R1 mini me.
