Wesley Mills had this same problem and posted a video on the fix. I didn't break open the gun this time, but sent it back to Rossi. Some of the problem has to do the internal machining and milling. Here is Wesley's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/romnmKeJh81gl8U

Greg, you can find my video on the Rossi RP63. I had the EXACT SAME issue after about 30 rounds. On the inside of the side plate there is a channel that the hammer disconnect rides in as you pull the trigger. That channel is so tight and not polished that the disconnect bar actually sticks, thus binding the trigger. I used a jewelers file and polished that out. Then I didn’t put much torque on the back side plate screw that’s under the grip. Since doing so, I’ve put 200 rounds through the firearm, zero issues. My Ruger GP100 has well over 2000 rounds with zero issues as well.

Standing down on my acquisition of an RP63 or even a 462, and like the rest of Greg's following, anticipating the diagnosis and remedy. In concurrence with other commenters, these small guns are really .38s chambered for .357 to have a desirable selling point feature, even .38+P and +P+ pushes the envelope limits. Any brand firearm can have one with an issue, Lucky Gunner had a GP100 Match Champion video about 1 that failed him a few years back but Ruger is still an unquestioned top dog.

@@LionquestFitness "Greg, I totally agree with your comment. My Taurus 856 had two out of thee FTF the first 3 rounds I shot. I used the 110gr (Not +P) Hornady Critical Defense. I upgraded my springs and have not had a single problem with FTF. I've shot a couple hundred rounds out of it since then. I also thought it was a little off target when I first got it, But after changing the grip to a Pachmayr Renegade smooth rosewood, (Much better grip IMO) I've been hitting the target much better. It's quite a bit thicker and my pinky has a solid home with the new grip. Been quite happy with it. But I sure wouldn't have been comfortable trying to carry it with that Hornady. The first new handgun I bought was a Rossi 22lr. I bought it from Walmart back when they weren't WOKE! I still have it. Well Uncle Don has it but, I still own it. See I bought another one just like it. My youngest Son actually borrowed the second one and I ain't seen it since. At any rate I bought that first Rossi the day I turned 21. I just turned 59 Monday. The first revolver still works but, has a slight timing issue only on one hole though. Slow controlled fire no problem. Especially in Single Action. You really get to rapid firing in double action she will lead up the forcing cone and lock on you. Seems to be just on that one spot. Would I trust a Rossi in a hot 357 mag....no sir? If that little 22 was a 357 mag, it would not be safe. To be fair though, tens of thousands of rounds through her before she developed the issue. I trust my Rugers and Smiths with magnum loads. I have a Taurus that I trust with 22mags. I am interested in the Taurus 38 that is the size of the j frame that is 6 shot though.

I am rooting for Rossi. I never want to see a gun maker fail. Why? Manufacturers are constantly attacked politically via lawfare. We all suffer when they fail. My experiences with Ruger have been excellent in handguns over the years (no, I do not own any Ruger centerfire rifles, but do have a 10/22 I bought for my wife. She loves it. I am going to buy one for me to make a project gun.) Blackhawks, Super Blackhawks, Security Six's, SP101, GP100, all of them are just fine. Magnum loads? Not a problem, minus the smaller SP101, which functions fine with mags, but I do not with that smaller gun! A bit much recoil for ME in a small gun. I shoot +P in it and absolutely no issues, for me, or the firearm. Looking forward to the discovery of the issue, be it faulty part or whatever. I am not a revolver smith. I do know if timing on a wheel gun is off, you WILL have a bad day. Looking forward to an update!

@@LionquestFitness This is sad that this has happened... It could just be a QC issue - especially since it's a brand new model. And my thought is that perhaps it just needs to be polished up inside?... I have a few Tauruses myself, and fortunately they've been very reliable for me - especially my model 627 4" barrel Tracker (which I would recommend to anyone; very accurate - and with well over 1000 rounds through it now!). The cheaper Tauruses, in my experience, start out with a gritty trigger pull, that eventually smoothens out. The more expensive Raging Hunter line etc. seem to start with smooth triggers right out of the box (almost up to the level of a S&W 686, imo)... But yeah, I've never experienced anything like this (fortunately); hopefully it's just something minor and you'll get it back soon (or a new replacement)!

Revolvers can be finicky. Shooting the Taurus Public Defender yesterday which has always functioned perfectly when it locks up. Thought it was dead in the water. Get it unstuck and it worked perfectly another 60 rounds. It was hanging up on one ,45 Colt reload case. Got a Charter Arms Undercover Lite that is useless in double action with anything but American Gunner Hollow Points, has a weak hammer drop in double. Got a Rock M206 that will have one lite primer strike per 100 shot. I think Kimber revolvers have a good reputation, for $1,200 dollars.

I had the same problem at the range with a rossi model 461. When the cylinder is open, that lockup is normal because of the notch on the hammer mechanism inside the gun. This notch is part of the hammer mechanism itself and cannot be removed and is normal to the guns function. When my 461 did the same thing as yours i diagnosed some possible reasons and i found that the main problem was that notch i was talking about is getting jammed by the cylinder release latch spring. My options were to remove that spring and let the cylinder release wiggle freely without the spring or take the spring out and polish it and slightly bend the spring into the frame so it doesnt get caught on that notch. If you take the spring out, im not too sure if it will affect the function of the lock hole on the back of the hammer mechanism itself but otherwise the gun will work fine without it for it being just a spring for the latch. I decided to keep mine in,polish, bend it and put a little super glue on the end of the spring that contacts the frame because taking it out will cause the latch to make noise as its free wiggling and thats annoying some times lol ever since i did that ive had zero malfunctions with the cylinder locking up. Just a notice that this jam might also keep you from opening up the cylinder to eject all those rounds so you have to turn the gun sideways and smack that cylinder out while holding the release latch in. ive done some work polishing and opening up the 461 model that im familiar with it,pretty much made my 461 as good if not better than a smith. Im not sure if the parts list is the same for the rp63 but from the looks of it its just the same its just aesthetically different with the sights and finish and trigger being flatter so the parts should be similar but i havent took one of the newer models apart to compare so take that with a grain of salt.
@shockwavedevice
@shockwavedevice 7 ай бұрын
this design with that release spring in the newer models might be different but in the 461 models you could just take the spring out uncaptured so im not to sure if the newer model is the same. i dont know if rossi knows the spring tolerances and tightness fit when it comes to this problem but i guess thats why the guns are budget friendly.
@shockwavedevice

I also forgot to mention the recoil of the gun is what moves the spring to jam into that notch locking up the gun so shooting 357 will increase the chance of this particular malfunction with this gun.

Pocket carry - two inch. Belt carry - I prefer three inch.

Even though the Rossi is rated for .357, it’s not medium frame revolver and is not meant to shoot .357 a lot or shoot the hottest loads. It’s basically a j frame. I would never shoot underwood or buffalo bore .357 in one of those or in many other smaller revolvers. Those rounds are better for rifles and are loaded really hot usually
@LionquestFitness
@LionquestFitness 7 ай бұрын
True in some aspects, but in going over the manual, there is very little information on the limits of .357 rounds in the gun. It should be able to take a small amount of .357 pressured rounds for it to be labeled .357.

@@LionquestFitness if you compare the thickness of the metal around the barrel and the forcing cone of a medium frame .357 revolver(like a s&w 686 or Taurus model 66) compared to a Taurus 605 or that Rossi you will see that the Rossi and the 605 are more similar to .38 special +p revolvers. Yea they are chambered in .357 but they aren’t built tough enough for a steady diet of .357 or for hot .357 loads. It’s kind of false advertising. The only .357 snub in that class that is built to withstand that abuse is the sp101. Underwood and buffalo bore are known to load their ammunition at the maximum(not always but most often) for the pressures a gun can handle.

False advertising? Ya think? But, I have to differ on the barrel and forcing cone difference on that Rossi, as well as the metallurgy, which is forged and just as thick as the SP101. A steady diet? No, but it should be able to shoot a limited amount.@@50086gt

@@LionquestFitness the sp101 is a very thick and heavy revolver. That Rossi is basically a fancy Taurus 605. I don’t think many people would agree that the sp101 isn’t built to withstand more abuse than the Rossi. It seems like you may be trying to be condescending but I’m simply telling you what many others have discovered with the Taurus 605 platform and .357 loads. It’s chambered in .357 but it doesn’t handle them as well as a gun that’s meant to shoot a lot of them. Gun Sam revolver aficionado has a video about this. The rossi is a variant of the 605 platform and shoot hot .357 through it is not a good idea. That’s not your fault, it’s a weak design

The SP101 is made from cast steel, not forged. There is a difference in the tensile strength. The RP 63 weighs almost the same as as a three inch SP101. I have run hotter magnum loads through a 605, but not a steady or heavy diet thereof. The point of the video was to question Rossi's use of the magnum designation and marketing if the gun does not hold up, but that is yet to be seen as to what caused the binding. @@50086gt

I'm sending it back tomorrow. They sent me a shipping label. Being Christmas time I don't expect to find out anything until after the first of the year. So far Rossi has been very helpful.

The reason that you are hitting to the left is because this Rossi model has a ridiculous 50 pound trigger pull and the rear sight is so narrow and short that you cannot get a proper sight picture so until Rossi makes the corrections on this model I cannot recommend it.

As far as I know, I'm the only one who has reported this problem with the new Rossi's. The main thing is proving it with different ammos and range time before carrying. I got it FED EXed today, and Rossi is footing the cost, so we'll see how it washes out.

Externally, it looks like a very well made gun. However, as the saying goes with Taurus products, you often get a cherry, but sometimes a lemon.

I don't trust Rossi or Taurus revolvers. It just seems a matter of time until they fail. Sometimes you luck out, other times you don't. Not worth the cost savings.

I have never owned a Rossi or Taurus, but I must ask, when have you seen them fail? Is it commonplace or just a fluke? Because I have $500 rifles that have been vastly more reliable than $1k rifles, price isn't everything in my experience.

Well, in contrast, I have a 605 and 856 that have been dependable for years. The 605 is my second favorite gun and the most carried. My favorite? A model 64 that had to go back to S&W with a crooked barrel.

I have a rossie snubbie from many years ago. It fires every time. I also have several tauri with zero issues. I also have rugers and smith's. My lower cost function just the same as the expensive boys do. That being said I won't be buying a new rossi or for that matter a new ruger or smith as I am set with what I have. Would love a 2.5 or 3 inch gp 100 but can't find one that is reasonably priced.
