Rotten Tomatoes has a "Average Rating" under it. Which is more so a score average, than a "Good/Bad" ratio, despite like you said, it's small, but it's there... I think most people know that. I don't see that so much an issue. The way I use RT is that I treat the % as a indicator to the chance that I'd like a film. There's a chance I'll love a a film with 30%, but it's probably less likely than a film with 90%. But I wouldn't complete dismiss a film because of a low %. The real issue, as with most things, are how stupid people are. They treat the % as gospel. Just like they treat game critics as the all knowing gods. And that's what makes the site so important. People hold reviews too such a high regard, they gain a unwarranted importance. And now Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes seem to be the be all and end all of a movies success...(and the box office).

I personally 100% agree. I don't hate the website. In fact, there are times the rotten tomatoes scale is actually correct when it comes to the quality of a film, like Zootopia, Inside Out, finding dory, Scooby Doo 2, etc. Its just... most people have no idea how rotten tomatoes works. I only use the rating scale to judge if they were right or not. the plus about it is that, you can read all the reviews in one website, which is good for people who like to read reviews. It's all a matter of opinion, just many will never accept them! the only thing I hate about it is that I wish the ratings of 6 or 2 and a half stars are considered rotten

Gravitynaut You don't know how to do math do you. Rotten Tomatoes is garbage. This is due to the rating system counting a movie with consistent 7/10s as 100% but then a movie with mostly 10/10s and some 3/10s as 60%. Just look at both IMDb's and Rotten Tomatoes' Top 250. You have brilliant movies never making it to Rotten Tomatoes' top movies because the list is filled with 7/10 lukewarm approval movies that get 100%. It's an absolutely flawed site that everyone simply uses out of stupidity. The IMDB average rating is the one that matters, it's really just a probability out of 10 that anyone on average will enjoy a movie.

My issue with the whole mindset of "you need to see it yo know if its good" is that it defeats the purpose of reading reviews. For example, the new Star Trek and Ghostbusters. I have nothing but contempt for both, based on literally everything about the production besides the final product. I've openly stated I'm not seeing either. Idiots however keep calling me closed minded for not giving money to studios whose products I find disagreeable and whose actions I find repulsive. At the end of the day, a system that relies on you buying into something to see if you should have bought in in the first place is no market to participate in at all.
@thepinkestpigglet75298 жыл бұрын
I fail to see what that examples has to do with reviews. Refusing to see a movie because you don't agree with the actions of the studio that made it does not mean you don't like the movie. It just means you don't like the studio. It sounds like if you were to pirate a film by a studio you don't like, you might like better than you would if you were to watch it legally.
@RobertStoll8 жыл бұрын
Because one way to tell whether or not a film will defy your expectations ad that the studios didn't fuck it up is to look at reviews and decide if you want to give it your money at all. That's the whole reason to look at reviews. And yes, if I don't like the studio most likely the studio is grabby on their movies and that influence will ruin the film for me. Happened often enough where it's just preemtive now. I won't even pirate those kinds of films either. Studios use those numbers as well to influence their decisions.
@crono30158 жыл бұрын
That issue doesn't bother me. I watch reviews for entertainment. You aren't really supposed to take a review seriously. Just some random person's opinion.

This actually helps me. Being a huge moviegoers I never saw into any specifics about most movies that would be on my radar. But sometimes I would just see the reviews and determine if I would see this movie or not. And other times I would avoid spoilers a little bit. Only the reviews would help make up my mind about any sort of movie in general. But I think Box Office Mojo would be my source to keep up with every movie released. And to me I tend to focus on those that have a more massive impact on any moviegoer and those that are successful in the box office. But overall thanks for explaining this information. I'll keep that in mind the next time I read reviews.

Personally, this is a lot better than the Nostalgia Critic's "When Are Critics Wrong?" editorial. One of his few bad ones. The reason is that Mat doesn't give off the impression that critics have an agenda or something and unlike Doug he knows how the site actually works. Sorry, but it's hard to take him seriously when he has no idea how it works. Like in his reviews of Zootopia or The Jungle Book. I feel when he doesn't mention Rotten Tomatoes or at the very least when he's with Rob and they mention it briefly, then the reviews are far better. The problem is to me he lets it be the soul source of his expectations and as a result he ends up being underwhelmed or let down.

Rotten tomatoes is for idiots! This video is pretty much echoing the same points I've been making for years now(except for his ridiculous conclusion). The good thing is that people are slowly wising up to this and are using metacritic more and more. Though their "algorithm" seems somewhat open to doctoring it's very likely that it's a far more reliable rating system. RT should either wake up and use their fine print average critic rating as the entire premise of their site or simply close up shop. The only other possibility is to start rating kid films only as they are the only ones that would be happy with a simple binary like/dislike way of rating a movie.
@Crypt0n1an7 жыл бұрын
Joshua Hogberg The very fact that you're asking me this question shows you have no real understanding of the issue at hand. I have no time to explain this to people that are oblivious to the matter. Rotten Tomatoes is terrible now. I've been a member on the site now since it began and visit it on average around 4-5 times a week. Have a look just now at the release date they have for God Particle. It's been on the site now for a release date of February, even although it's not due until later on in the year. Their staff don't seem to have a clue because this is now a regular occurrence of posting the wrong release dates. The site is slow, the trailers sometimes refuse to load or are glitchy, the advertisement space takes up half the screen sometimes, they are way behind on the latest movie news which sometimes can be over a week out of date and the site is generally now overall very poor because of it. I would say if they reviewed their own site I would give it a score of 20% ROTTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you. For example, I think Jurassic park is a good movie, and rotten tomatoes agrees with me. But, I also think Jurassic park: the lost world is a good movie. Rotten tomatoes says otherwise. I think the definition of a good movie varies from person to person, and the best way to tell if a movie is good or not is to see it yourself. Or, if you're that unsure of yourself, find a critics review.
@TotalAnimeFreak4567 жыл бұрын
It is kind of a tricky subject. Me, I use RT to determine whether or not I'll go see the movie in theaters. I'm an unemployed student living off my savings, so I can't afford to go see every movie, not even the ones I'm interested in. Still, as someone who's been burned by bad movies in the past (I've seen Vampires Suck, Cop Out, and a Twilight movie my friend dragged me to, all in theaters), so I'm not inclined to spend my limited funds on a crappy film and overly expensive snacks. A low or unimpressive RT score doesn't mean I won't watch it at all - maybe I'll make a note of it and wait for it to come out on Netflix, on TV, for a DVD/Blu-ray to drop to affordable levels, or another option. Hell, I saw Kingsmen: Golden Circle two days ago (Tomatometer: 50%) and really enjoyed myself. A high score doesn't guarantee I'm gonna run out and see it, either; despite Wonder Woman and Spider-Man Homecoming getting really good scores, I never saw them due to the aforementioned budget constraints. In essence, I use the site more to weigh my options for seeing a film than whether or not I'm going to watch or ignore a film.

There are some critics (like me) who's primary goal is to educate parents on whether a film is appropriate for kids or teens (i.e. "Toy Story 3" might be too scary for young kids), but it's still up to the parents to decide what's okay for their children and what isn't.

Rustydog9000! I actually do you understand why Thomas fans says Thomas and the magic railroad isn't as good as they remember it but to tell you the truth the Real reason why it failed in theaters worldwide is because there was the original uncut version of the film with an actual main proper villain named PT Boomer (played by Doug Lennox) which explains the reasons in the film that makes a lot more sense like why Peter Fonda is really sad about his magical engine and why Lilly goes to shining time station and things aren't going well on the island of sodor, but thanks to those Hollywood test audiences that destroyed Britt Allcroft's film she had to cut out PT Boomer because The test audience said he was too frightening which he really isn't that frightening at all. A lot of Thomas fans are working hard to support the petitions you can find on the Internet, ones at change.org restore the magic campaign and reawaken the magic thunderclap determined to see the directors cut of Thomas and the magic railroad release on the big screen worldwide and onto DVD and Blu-ray.

I think "biased" is a better word. If this is really how the rating system works, then it is significantly flawed. However, there are movies that were decent to good which have shitty scores and there are shit movies with masterpiece-level scores. The idea that a movie like Oblivion with such beautiful music and scenery, and an entertaining and unique story from a new director, would get 54% while a lazy, poorly written and poorly acted "comedy" like Spy got 93%; that goes beyond a flawed system.

There are multiple movies with low percentages that I liked. There were multiple movies with high percentages that I disliked, or just thought were mediocre. Conjuring 2, for example, was a rather pedestrian horror movie that had little to offer. My sixteen-year-old sister and I were a bit bored in the cinema, and at one point she leaved over to me and muttered that she could be home watching anime. We thought it deserved about sixty or seventy percent at best, but it got far more. Obviously, there is no justice and civilization is doomed.

I like Rotten Tomatoes as a general idea of what other people think of the movie, but I don't use it as my sole judging factor

you know I never knew how rotten tomatoes worked XD all I knew is that I'm not the biggest lover of the website. But I can respect it even if I don't use it much.

a survey has been done and has shown young people are using the site to make sure the films are worth their money like for example, the baywatch movie bombed because young people saw the rating and went to watch other stuff instead.
