Id imagine that Rusty's family might have bought a more humble home compared to others, since being in the army, rusty's dad could get stationed somewhere else unexpectedly, so investing in a larger, nicer home to then have to sell it wouldn't be worth the trouble for them.

I think a big hole in the "Rusty's mom works" aspect is that argument him and Indy had in Mum & Dads. "Moms don't work they stay home and look after kids." I think if Rusty's mom worked he wouldn't have defaulted to this kind of view. Where it makes sense for Indy to say that moms work since we see her mom working a booth in the tooth fairy episode.

You bring up a good point, of course this happened when they were around the age of 6 and before Jack was at school. So it is possible that over that next year Rusty’s mum did eventually get a job which is why she couldn’t pick Rusty up a lot and he had to hang out at jacks after school

That's a good point, plus it's possible that the reason the mom wasn't able to pick up her kid every day is because she had to look after her youngest daughter or she just wanted an extra hand with the kids and a chance for Rusty to hang out with Jack after school. I knew a lot of kids who would carpool with other kids' parents or take the bus home, despite many of them having two parents with one of them staying home, mostly because it just makes things a little easier for the mom and the kids are happy to be with their friends. Otherwise you have someone like my mom, who would always pick me up late, because she was very insistent about me not taking the bus home, despite most kids at my school doing so, because she was afraid that the bus would crash while I was in it or that I'd miss my stop. She didn't work, but she was often busy with my younger siblings or would lose track of time, hence why she picked me up late (I'm sure it also had to do with having too much pride to admit that she might need help), so I don't blame moms like Rusty for not picking her kids up every day if she is a SAHM.

I know everyone loves the adults in this series, especially Bandit and Chilli, but I think it's important to note that the only reason Bandit is able to do so much work from home, take all that time to play with his children, and for them to even have all those toys, IS because Bluey's family is extremely privileged! These girls are growing up with thee best schooling, access to healthy food, present parents, a safe neighborhood. This is literally a look into "what can life be like for the privileged kids". I love this show, and I love it's rep of different "people" like the deaf community, and the ADHD children. I don't expect it to take on systemic poverty, climate refugees, or unfair political systems. Hell every child should get to grow up like Bluey, but I think it's important to remember that this is a life literally only the most privileged families can even hope to afford.

His dad worked in the army, so I’m assuming that would boost up there money. Although, since he was the army, Rusty’s mom would have to take care of him and Dusty, so it was probably stressful. And I’m guessing that he’s spoiled because In the episode wild girls he said he had a new quad bike.
@ravenschippers8267

rusty could also be just pretending he had a new quad bike since i recall him saying that in the wild girls game where they played pretended. My assumption with the socio-economical state of rusty's family is theyre not wealthy but they're not poor either, a sort of upper middle class wealth. also the family could have bought the house back when it was cheeper when rusty's brother was still younger or could have been the house rusty's father owned before he met his wife. idk about ausie military and how they care for their active soldier but there is a chance that rusty's dad being a vet could have helped in getting the house.

If I’m honest I like the idea of rusty being poor because I grew up rather poor to in a 3 bed two bathroom house that often had to many people in it for the amount of space. I think Rusty’s parents both working can be reason for both sides of the story him being or not being poor because maybe his mom works to allow rusty to go to the school he does/ afford their house. And maybe the house is a family house? That they had before the market rose which would fit into the timeline because their eldest son is a preteen/teen. I feel like making Rusty’s family poor makes them more relatable and I kinda hope it’s true as bad as that sounds 💀😅

I agree. I think it would be nice to show kids that not everyone is as privileged as their peers and thats ok. Maybe Digger had a bad experience in grade school so she went to work to be able to afford a better school. Maybe they were able to afford it at first but when the prices went up she had to go back to work, hence him saying moms don't work in season 1. I think it all fits in the timeliness well. I wouldn't say they're poor persay, but lower income than Bluey's family & I think that would be good to show to let kids know that its ok.

I’m not privy to Australia but in America there are a lot of army families who live near basis and a good portion is paid for by the army. Sometimes depending on the rank the families of American soldiers get free housing. Also, there are supposedly veteran bills that help veterans get affordable housing, Rusty’s dad isn’t a veteran but you didn’t touch on the reduced costs for army soldiers and families

My thought is that yes, housing and Rusty's school are somehow being taken care of, or partly taken care of by his dad working for the military. I also think that the overall economic and possibly other issues that are present in our world are less so in the Blueyverse. Honestly though, it actually really makes me think about the backgrounds of all the characters. Like Coco. Big family right? Does that mean they have money? I highly suspect that Honey's parents have money, but are also part of a higher social class than say Bluey is. My evidence for that one comes from Spygame where you can see all the mums sitting in regular chairs, except for Daisy who is sitting in a giant fancy chair. And here is something about Winton's dad, AKA Cornelius. He is divorced and lives in a house with a pool which indicates wealth, yet we see him selling toffee apples at the Market. Now Markets was made before Helicopter, so it's possible that at that point they hadn't nailed down the character(or the story). But in the end though it doesn't matter since from what I understand, Aussies really aren't too keen on social standings or who does what or how much they make for a living. Quite frankly, I love the idea of a school that even though it's private, it's not one where kids are bullied for their background if they are different than the others.

Yes part of being in the armed services here in America the soldiers get housing. They can give that benefit back and live on the base housing or post housing. They can also take that benefit and live off post or base. If the rent or mortgage is larger than the benefit that has to be paid out of their regular pay. Often soldiers buy homes and rent them out if they get transferred to a different base. Most move back to that home if that’s where the want to retire. Depending on Rusty’s dads rank will depend on his pay and benefits. They longer your in the bigger your pay and benefits. My dad was retired Navy & my son in law is retired Army.

@@aussiegirlmargie - Could be a Defence Service rental to be honest. Lots of those near bases and it would explain why previously it has been indicated they were from the Bush. It's quite common given Defence Service personnel can move quite large distances. It fits with all the other info we have been given. Both Rusty & Jack look like where they live is a little further down the totem pole than many of the others. So a slightly too small a house near an Army base does gel with a rental and maybe indicates that Jack too lives in that slightly more down market area. I dont think they are necessarily poor but the location is probably more for practicality than anything else (close to where he is stationed). The prices now everywhere are high as you indicated but being able to afford those extra few hundred thousand difference is very difficult to get loans for so even if they own it's probably safe to say they are not as wealthy as many of the other families shown.

If they were to sell and cash in on that equity you dont get much in a city for it but could buy quite well in the country. I really don’t think they are poor, but maybe middle class, it could be that they chose that house cause the army would help with expenses, like a retribution for choosing to live close. About the private schooling, my brother and I used to be on private schooling while being lower middle class, we couldn’t keep it up for our whole education since it was a big burden for my family every month. They pushed us to have good grades which gave us an scholarship and they payed early, both helped with the costs. They wanted us to have “good foundations” like learning different languages and being more closely watched, but after elementary school we went to public schools, they still tried to get us to the bests public schools they could, and pushed us to do good in the placement tests. Where I live getting into a good school and keeping good grades means you basically already have a place on the top 1 university of the country.

I think your reason behind Rusty's mom working does not hold up. I think she does cause a lot of military families need the non-military parent to work especially when the military parent is overseas (or whatever you say for a military person to be in another country). The fact that Dusty is younger does mean she should never be left home alone. We do see that when Bandit has to go for a work trip Chili has to change things and not let Bluey go to Honey's house ( I did wonder why she could not go home with Honey's parent and get picked up later) so Bingo can still do her activity. Most likely scenario is that they are from the Country and Rusty's dad was posted to the Gallipoli Barracks before deployment. It's also very likely that the house they are in is owned by the Department of Defence and they are renting that's pretty normal for defence service families as they can move locations quite a lot in comparison to other families. I think in general on what we can see they aren't dirt poor or anything but they are probably a bit lower down the totem pole than people like Bluey's family. Same goes with Jack to be honest - there are some indications from this episode that their yard is a bit problematic and that like Rusty they are maybe a little bit poorer and cant afford the more upmarket homes.

I like to think all of them bought their houses prehousing crisis so they all didn’t pay that much lmao BUT I do think Rusty is solidly middle class. His dad seems like a working mans man, and if they came from the bush (they’d be country people where I’m from!) they may have wanted a more reasonably priced second home close to the base!

I think your missing a huge point….as an Army family they could very well be living in defence housing. We moved around every two years as navy kids. Mum and dad certainly didn’t buy each time, we lived in the housing the defence force provided. By the way the dad’s letter talked about heat up north it sounds like they have had to move at least once in recent years….perfectly plausible

Good pick up on the heat. It could also indicate they are originally from North Queensland and perhaps thats where Rusty's dad was originally stationed. There are a lot of Military bases up there. I agree that it could be a defence service home.

There are people in the rural US who'll spend their money on land and vehicles, equipment, farming, etc, and live in a trailer. Obviously they have a ton of money they're spending but they are choosing how they spend it based on their priorities, typically to not go into ridiculous debt. Getting those vibes from Rusty's family.

Are the high prices of houses in Australia the reason of why people are moving out to US or somewhere else? And, since you used to live in Australia, do you sometimes feel homesick, after Bluey show decided to base on real-life locations a lot?
@aussiegirlmargie
@aussiegirlmargie Жыл бұрын
I constantly feel homesick and the cost of living being so high is one of the reasons we havnt gone back to australia yet. It definitely is a factor that people consider when leaving australia especially to work and live in Europe or Asia which has a much better cost of living
@ororomunroe8170
@ororomunroe8170 Жыл бұрын
I think its a safe assumption that Rusty's family is significantly lower on the tax bracket than other families, but calling them poor is definitely a stretch. Poor definitely gives off the vibe that they are impoverished, when they're really not. What they are, is working class, which doesn't surprise me at all. From a US perspective I had to do a little research because I'm not familiar with the salary of Soliders in the Austrailian military, nor the cost of living in and outside of Brisbane. However what I did find definitely supports the idea that while Rusty's family are far from poor, they're definitely still Working Class. Rusty's dad's starting wage In the military would have started at around 48-50k and assuming he would have had this career since post high school, its reasonable to assume that his salary would have gone up to 60-65k in the time passing. *However* on the wiki it mentions him having a green beret that *COULD* reference him being a commando for the 1st Commando regiment or the 2nd Commando regiment, which would put his estimated Salary at around 85k IF it's canon that he is a commando (the green beret could solely be for design purposes) So Rusty's dad makes at minimum 60-65k or if canon, a maximum of 85k. Rusty's Mum, I don't think works meaning they're living fully off of Rusty's dad's income. As far as housing goes, its reasonable to assume it was purchased in the late 2000s coinciding with the GFC, and subsequent housing crash, and would probably have ranged from 100k-180k (possibly low 200's). Which can all be comfortably afforded on a 60k salary. The year the house was bought plays a huge factor. Even though NOW they're worth upwards of a 1M, the family that bought it for 180k doesn't automatically become 1M richer. When my family bought our house, we bought it for 94k (Outskirts of a city, 4Bed, 2Bath, 1800sq ft) and 8 years later sold for 160k. 4 years later, its estimate is around 260k. We couldn't buy that 260k house today, but we owned it while it went up 10s of thousands in value. Adding kids into the mix significantly raises the general cost of living, but I can't properly calculate that due to the range In ages from Rusty and his siblings, as well as their respective birth years and inflation. But still affordable (I know this because I grew up lower working class with 2 other siblings and we did in fact manage to own). As far as having property in the Bush, that could be a whole range of things. Even if they did buy it, property in an undeveloped and uninhabitable area (like the Bush), would be unearthly cheap with low taxes (considering they kept it undeveloped and only camp there occasionally). What is also likely is the land was in the family already, and they don't really "own" it. Schooling is an interesting factor to consider here because as you said, that is an expensive school to send their child to. In my experience that would have never been in the question for my family. My guess is they either had a low income grant, or a military scholarship. Obviously my limited research could have been better, but it's a simple theory I wanted to look into, and it yielded some very likely results, but we won't know for sure unless one of the creators wants to confirm like they did with Chilli's Miscarraige. I think the portrayal of Rusty's living situation is extremely intentional, and probably represents one of the writers or creators childhoods growing up working class in Brisbane. I appreciate the varying economic statuses of the characters, and how the jobs of the parents reflect that. Better yet, none are portrayed in an "unhappy" way.

I've known poor families who sent their kids to a private/ better school. Now in my experience seeing this and the people my mom would hang around they'd usually achieve this by drug dealing; this was before the opeit epidemic. While I don't think at all the show was implying this I know for a fact a family can be poor and still front a nice life to an extent. Especially if they inherited the house and a bunch of other loop holes I won't go into details about. But I think Rusty might just be middle class. But I'm not Australian so idk maybe that is lower class to them.

It’s always a choice if you live on base housing or out in town. You usually get a rental payment depending on your rank but that does not usually cover the full cost of rent of a house nearby unfortunately
@lady_gwen
@lady_gwen Жыл бұрын
Not quite accurate. You can live in DHA housing (Defence Hoising Accosiation), which provides a 3-4 bedroom house for about $600 a fortnight (every two weeks). This amount is based on your pay grade, and houses do get a bit nicer as you progress through the ranks. Very few (say only 1 or 2 tops) actually have a "marriage patch" or an area on base where the families live. Most bases require all families to go through DHA for their housing in proximity to the nearest base.

So i grew up rusty. Granted this in the usa so im sure programs differ. But it wasnt unheard of for military familys to live in houses higher than their incomes. There are programs here that will take off % of the home with the military paying the rest. They also offer super low intrest loans so your monthly payments can be lower. Also, it isnt unheard of for some areas to be owned by the military near the bases. That way as familys come and go over the years they have housing they can move into immediately. They dont pay rent but are in charge of all repairs utilities.

Minor points that I noticed that may indicate Jack's families socio economic status being lower than Bluey's family and indicate the same for Rusty's - Jack doesn't own stumps not even cheap plastic ones - he plays a lot of Cricket with Rusty using a Box and a Branch at the bowlers end. The Cricket obsessed Rusty has access to Cricket stumps at his home. Digger and his friends are shown using a very old looking beaten up Cricket ball and whilst they do have access to both pads and a Helmet at the ground they dont appear to be Diggers as he is not carrying them when he returns after Rusty gets hit and are not shown along with the Bat in their room. Digger also takes them off and puts them on Rusty the first time he bats indicating there are not multiple sets of the equipment being used. The pads could fit into his backpack at a pinch but not the helmet. Indicating Digger and his mates are sharing equipment and that someone other than Digger owns the helmet and probably the pads too. Given Jack, Rusty, Digger and his mates are all shown to be obsessively playing the game it is possible that for all of them money is a little tight and they are making do with what they have access too. That said it's possible Rusty's brother owns pads and a Helmet and he and his mates simply use the equipment of whomever lives closest to that ground.

Hello! I agree with your theory that Rusty may be poor, and the fact the house is so much could be just a passed down house from generation to generation. That way, the theory would still work. Or they just live in a bad neighborhood and don't want to move. That's a possibility as well.
