Black bears are not that scary compared to brown bears, grizzlies, or humans. Most times black bears will leave the area when the see humans. Bang pots and pans together and make a lot of noise. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. Don’t keep food in your tent. Bears can smell food in cans. Vermont, NH, and Maine wild life awareness is a way of life.

One quick tip you guys. If you are already set up and high winds come through, park your truck on the side of the camper that is getting the most wind. The truck will help block the wind and reduce any chance of the camper blowing over. If you are still hooked to the truck, park the front of the truck and camper into the wind.

What security cameras do you have and use?
@Erin-Thor3 жыл бұрын
@@hermangarcia1028 - I’m guessing you were asking them and not me 🤓. I use eufy cameras, bought 2 - 3x camera packages and place them around the campsite and on my trailer. The mounts are sticky or screwed in, and I pull them from their magnetic mounts when I travel. NOTE that they are theft risks, they have alarms that you can enable if moved, but if you’re away you’ll just get a motion alert and may or may not see it again. (Two disappeared, one was damaged, and the 4th theft attempt, the person just dropped it on the ground and ran.) they do not require internet, they store a micro SD card in the base and have a range of 300’-ish. They have red security night lights which you can disable for covert use. If you have wireless internet at your RV, you can view the alerts and footage from the alerts anywhere on your phone. I place them above my entry door, and high up facing each side, and place the other two facing my trailer, slightly hidden, but within sight of my RV (so if taken I might see who). Hope this helps.

True... but the one bear we encountered was NOT scared of humans at all. It was trying to break into an airstream and peeled back the corner of their door like tinfoil. We yelled, no response. We would yell, run towards it stomping our feet, it would just look at us and snarl, then return to opening their tin can airstream. One of the guy had a .45 and fired it, the bear looked at him, paused and returned to the airstream. It took several shots to scare the bear away, and then it walked away like ‘Whatever’ not threatened. It was scary for everyone there that night because it showed zero fear. It wasn’t aggressive, never approached a person, it was just focused on whatever it smelled inside the airstream.

Your I-70 story brought back memories. I had the worst driving experience of my life on the same stretch of road - only going the other direction. We were moving from Denver, in a fully loaded 24 foot U-Haul w/car tow. We thought getting over the summit was going to be the hard part. We were wrong. Coming down the other side was the long and winding Vail Pass. It had just gotten dark and started to snow. My rig was hurtling down the mountain. Trying desperately not burn out the clutch - or the brakes - we just kept picking up speed. Then, suddenly, without any warning, the headlights just... went... out. Pure terror.

Our scary moment was while getting ready to dry camp in a parking area of a trail head in Idaho. Three men walked off the highway and were looking around the area. They left, came right back, and then went into the woods. Even though it was getting close to sunset, we decided to leave and camped in the next town. The next day I was talking to a clerk at a gas station and she said 3 suspicious acting men were in yesterday. They had been in a fight and one had stabbed the other in the hand with a knife. The men that we saw matched her description (including a heavily wrapped hand)! Take-away is trust your gut. Even though we didn't want to move, I'm glad we did!

Glad you did... my husband and I did the same.. wanted to take a nap at a rest stop for about an hour and keep going but some guy tapped on our window. So we took turns going to the bathroom as he didn't seem to have a car but was looking in Windows around the other cars.. then when i came back he was back asking us for smokes and a couple dollars for gas. We didn't smoke and we didn't have much cash on us.. so when he suddenly noticed someone he wanted to talk to we pulled out and left. We got the feeling if we pulled out any money we might loose all of it.

@@cherriemckinstry131 Maybe 6 months ago my friend told me his landlady drove from LA to San Francisco to check on her apartment building she rents out for income. She's about 90. She came back and said all the rest stops in CA were closed and the reason was they were all overrun by gang members. I've seen that before they wait in the woods to come out and attack people. Hard to say why they get so desperate. I think it's drugs and they ran out of profit. The Texas governor said that meth was $80 a gram and since Biden it's $20 a gram. It's nearly free and they can't make the usual money so they are indeed desperate and likely addicted themselves or can't keep their addicted ladies happy so this makes certain types of men get aggressive/angry and some go out to attack. I got attacked by a drug addict in the 80's and he cut off my finger and thumb going after the car keys. I only had $3 in my purse. I was banged in the head so hard I had one and a half heads and just coming home from night school college and needed to breast feed my baby but I never made it inside. I had the near death experience and all that but at the hospital the doctor said "your lucky you didn't get raped, we get 3 cases like this a week and most of them get raped also"...So much for drugs on steroids with these horrible guys. 30+ years later I met some drug addicts who were nicer and they said that the drugs aren't the reason it's the person, and that the drugs bring up what's inside of the person.

Glad you made it through those 6 challenging situations. Thanks for sharing. RVing is a wonderful life experience, yet like you mentioned in your film, things can change very quickly. The worse situation I experienced. I was in a 40’ diesel pusher bus, parked in a rest stop in Néw Jersey. I remember looking at a sign posted as we entered, stated trucks only and no cars. The problem was, we had drove all day and did not know exactly where we were. Around midnight, a van with 4 very large grown men, pulled in and starting drinking beers. Then another car Load of men showed in another vehicle. Once they opened the back doors to their van, we became very concerned that we were going to get robbed. As we were hauling on the rear hitch, 2 gas scooters. I had to wake everyone up. Open the curtains. Start to close 2 slides all at the same time and start the engine. Once we did that. The entire group of men. Jumped in their vehicles and left. I learned a few things: When you stop at a rest stop, if it is empty, the local truckers know it is not a good area, and don’t stop. This particular rest stop we had stopped at. We were the only person there. So please do yourself a favor, if you see an empty rest stop, Drive to the next rest stop. Second understand where you at, in case you have to call 911, so you can inform the police where you are. Finally, I have realized, that I would rather stay at a truck stop, such as loves or flying J. As you are in the back of the gas station, and among the truckers. That are very aware of their environment. We felt very safe at those truck stops. Please realize, on this trip. we were not necessarily camping. We were traveling across country to visit family. Even since this happened to us. We have never stayed at another rest stop, only truck stops. Thanks for sharing. Mark

Two more cents regarding wind storms. Super common as you know in the desert southwest. Re-connect the truck and trailer and reposition so that the truck and trailer are into the wind just as they would be when going down the highway. It still sucks but at least you'll be comfortable knowing the rig can handle it.

We camped at a ski lodge near Bennington VT. Beautiful scenery, now I’m thinking I could have encountered a black bear while I was walking around on the property. Almost all the scary moments I’ve had were on the road, with either bad weather or weirdness. We were in Waco at a fuel and food stop. I had checked out the truck and trailer, gone in to get some stuff and when I returned to the truck, the driver in the vehicle parked next to us says “there’s something open on your trailer.” The door to the water heater was open. Someone had opened the door in the 5 minutes we were in the store. Nothing missing so it was truly strange ...

In the morning the camp host came around to check on us and we ask what was going on. He said an older couple had been found murdered in the next campground over and they had pulled a rifle out of one of the latrines in our campground. We decided that it was a good time to go somewhere else. On the same trip on the way home, we pulled into a state park campground in the mountains in Colorado after dark (off-season). It was empty except for a car parked in the middle with 2 men sitting in it. We left and found a KOA about 20 miles further down the road.

On our way out we were hit with a crosswind while going around a corner. Despite being well below the speed limit, the wind was strong enough to begin pushing the trailer sideways and it literally pulled the back of the truck. I quickly applied the trailer brakes (without using the truck brakes) and slightly increased speed which straightened us right up. Several weeks later I purchased an F250 and am so glad I did. We now tow a 30' Lance which we love - the lower profile and significantly better suspension makes for a much better towing experience than I though it would.

My heart almost stopped for worrying that a coyote possibly getting them, and finally was able to breathe when you shared that your cat babies were found nearby and safe….but I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD when Sweetie offered a hand shake!!! How sweet of a gesture from the “innocent”. Sorry for your scares, but thanks for sharing!

Hello, nice video. From Vail traveling east on I70 you first go over Vail pass, then drop down into Copper Mountain Ski Area, then to Frisco and Dillon, then climb out of Dillon to and thru Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnel, then down to Denver. That drive can be crazy durning a snow storm. I don't think I would want to do it towing something. I watch a RV'er, his name is Ray, and his channel is called, "Love Your RV". Ray did a video addressing high winds, he says to have you trailer hitched to your vehicle and have the vehicle pointed in the direction of prevaling winds. Love your vids and ideas.

And it's only like 3 miles from Dillon to the tunnel. That's the steepest part and the only time you go above 11000'.

A HAM radio would be a smart move for them, some of the inexpensive handheld radios have incredible range. A base station in their truck could be set up to deliver a lot of power to reach far and wide for emergency services. Most of the taller mountains in areas have repeaters so a VHF can reach a very long ways and if someone monitors the repeater they could call for help as well. Also, good weather alerts would come in handy. -KM6DVL

That is an excellent idea! I love the tranquility of being off the beaten path but there are crazies out there so we stick to paid campsites. If I owned protection and had a HAM radio I would be far braver...I think. Good advice!

Not just Anza Borrego, most deserts have areas that get a lot of wind at certain times of year. We drove through the town of Mojave , Ca. one Saturday, the wind had knocked out all power so no gas stations, traffic lights or food, and we passed 4 or 5 semis and RVs flipped on their sides on the highway. There are usually some fairly wind protected areas in any desert, I'd ask the locals.

If you ever get to Newfoundland, just a few miles from the Ferry dock, there is a big cliff that has a terrific wind come down and has in years past blown the train off the track, ( it is not running anymore) but the big rigs have to stop and wait if the FLAG IS UP! Meaning the winds are too high to travel across a short piece of road. When trucking there, I have had my truck almost tip over be cause the winds were really bad!! If your loaded it's not so bad, but pay attention to WIND WANNING FLAGS!!! They are there for a reason, though you may not think so! Also, watch out for open framed bridges in a canyon area. N.Y. has a bad one in the western part! You are learning some great lessons and glad your telling others what you have been through! It may save a life down the road! Stay safe and see you down the road!!!!

I used to work guest ranches in the Colorado Rockies. I can tell you from direct experience that it is possible to encounter snow at high elevations in June and July. One ranch I worked at was at elevation 8300 feet, and it snowed one June day. This same ranch also would run Jeep trips up to Independence Pass for guests to go play in the snow -- in July.

I think the pets getting out would be the most scary of those for me. My was going with my dad to use the camp outhouse in a remote part of BC as a kid. Dad opened the door, big ol grizzly came out, grunted at my dad who calmly held the door for the bear and then we slowly retreated back to the camper. We used the port-o-potty for the rest of the day. I still think pets getting out would upset me the most however. Occasional crazy people are definitely a thing.

This is why if you're planning to RV full time and leave your original state behind you should establish your new residency in a state whose concealed carry permit is recognized by as many other states as possible. Florida is a good RV friendly state that has pretty good reciprocity
@Shrimp_Insurance3 жыл бұрын
@chris kibodeaux Not necessarily true, as long as you can prove that you now consider another state your home (get drivers license, register vehicles, have an address in that state [You can use a mail forwarding service as your adress], and as an extra precaution establish ties to that state by joining a club or finding a primary Dr/vet etc.) Then you're good to go. This is what thousands of fill time RVers do

@@Shrimp_Insurance Probably not going to be safe to wander the roads and campsites with the migrants pouring in. Back in the days of wagon trains they knew they had to stick close together. Today's people want this freedom and independent thing to be going on but not on this earth unless you know how to use a gun and know where your going, and what's possible to expect up ahead. So far if you don't run out of money, it's safer to keep on running. Seems somehow money get's you safe to someplace to spend it in the equation. All this feels good when your young and strong but you eventually tend to have to settle down and make that work out....For going unusual places I can assure the military has that kind of thing investigated down to strange swamp creatures they sometimes loose a whole lot of men to even though they were weapons highly trained....My brother saw all his platoon dead as a doornail in Ukraine someplace. He was the only survivor. He made it to Lt Colonel then retired. USA seems a lot safer for that stuff. Still...not knowing simple things like where it's windy is something the military isn't sharing...there's some road signs explaining windy areas but you only see that after you get there driving by or whatever. It's nasty wind guaranteed in some CA places. Military doesn't travel in motorhomes either and never goes anyplace without a weapon so catch up people.

Wow, excellent video 👍 Sharing the stories of things that happened make everyone who watches hopefully more aware. Lots of dangers on the roads in the good old US of A, from 4 legged to 2 legged, and of course just nature itself. I know you guys are smart, and learn from the experiences, and you haven’t tucked tail and gave up. Learning from others experiences is really good. Do we as humans have the time to learn everything only through our own experiences? Probability no, so thank you for sharing so others can benefit. I don’t RV, but I’m old and traveled the roads enough to know, you are almost always more venerable in unfamiliar territory. Always know your route from point A to B, with an alternative as a backup. Know the weather (as best you can of course) on your route(s). Lots of other things I’m sure you know about and do to keep yourself aware and safe. Your lifestyle probability keeps your parents in close connection with the Lord Jesus, and that’s not a bad thing. Stay as safe as you can, enjoy yourself as you travel, getting there is where the fun is 😉.
