🦇🩸 To borrow _slice_ from RLM/Mike Stoklasa's "STEAK Analogy": *'Salem's Lot (aka Jerusalem's Lot) when compared to it's Source Material (Novel) is like when you take a Giant 300+ *page* Steak: And when trimming the Fat to turn that Steak into a 120 minute Feature Film, you inevitably end up trimming some of the Best Parts of the Steak away in the process. You are then left with a much smaller, less satisfying Story which only tangentially resembles what made it's original Source Material so remarkable, original & satisfying in the first place. 🚫🧛♂ 'SALEM'S LOT True Fans & Purists pretty much unanimously & invariably agree: his should have been a 8-10 Episode Mini-series: and the 1800's set Jerusalem's Lot 10 Episode Mini-series (which felt like "Butter Scraped Over Too Much Bread") _should *definitely* have been the *100 minute runtime Film* instead. )

You know it’s funny you mention that. In the scene where Ben, Susan and Father Callahan were standing outside the Marsten house and the camera pans out over the horizon there was a tower in the middle of the screen in the far off distance. I paused it and it was not an electrical tower, maybe it was the Dark Tower?

Any movie can only be a disappointment if you've read the book. but even series aren't a guarantee for quality. Look at what they did to The Stand, the original series missed out on much of the novel but the remake was pure drivel. That could have been so much better.

Although, I haven't seen the original in 30 years. I still think it blows away this remake. As a child, the window scene and the Mike in the rocking chair scene (which they omitted) scared the crap out of me. They failed to mention the history of the Marsten House and Hubie Marsten and how "if a house could be evil and retain that evil and attract evil." They also left out that he came back mainly for the Marsten House to study it and that after all those years, he still wasn't free from the pull of the house. They never touched on the house at all. As a fan of King, the book and the mini-series it has too many flaws, obviously the lack of character development and the rush feel and the quick end. If I had watched it as a modern day vampire movie without it being a remake, I might have not judged it so harsh and overall seen it as a decent vampire movie. I came in watching the movie, hoping it would be great but, ultimately disappointed. Thanks for the review.
@goatsandroses42583 ай бұрын
I'm so glad someone else said something. I simply couldn't get into this new version. (And I'm not saying the old one was without flaws) The new one seemed to take for granted that people knew the story about why Ben was obsessed with the Marsten House. The lack of at least a nod to that backstory was a real loss, I felt. The theme of the "bad place" drawing evil is such a part of King's work. Then, too, I much preferred the older, more polished, version of Straker in the earlier film. I don't know what it is, but the characters in the new version in general just don't catch my attention. On the plus side, my husband and I both applauded the inclusion of real 1970s culture, such as the S&H Green Stamps store sign. On the whole, though, we just felt the new show was "Mr. Mediocre."
@Thatshorrorible3 ай бұрын
@@goatsandroses4258 Totally agree, I get that they had to make some changes to cater to the new younger horror audience but, they omitted too much that made the original story what it was They did have the newspapers in the beginning showing articles about the house but, it was fast and if you didn't know the backstory then you would have missed it. I even said to my wife who hadn't seen the 1979 mini-series about how I preferred the older, more sophisticated, "air about him" Straker compared to the new one who they barely even gave any character development too. It was just a disappointment.

This movie seriously needed to be something like a Netflix limited series by Mike Flanagan..The novel has too much character depth, and there is no way to squeeze so much of the real story into a film just under 2 hours..Barlow looked ok, but looked too much like they just overlayed a cgi face of The Nun on top of a bald cgi head…Too much cgi for Barlow imo, but overall he looked alright..Overall, I think this film was entertaining..It had some VERY cool scenes a few times..I just didn’t like how FAST everything had to move in order to try covering as much as it could with the runtime given..

Ok I have to write this I have waited for this movie for decades . after the other failed attempts to live up to the original and years of waiting after hearing they were coming out with a new version back in 2018 to a few weeks ago when I saw the trailer for the realse on HBO. I was pumped . To me this was once again a major let down. They rushed the story way faster than the original with characters that they really didnt introduce to the audience. The c.g.i vampire affects made the vampires way less scary than the original . I'm sorry but if you have seen the original you cant walk away from this feeling satisfied in any way I could probably keep going on and on but I hope some day this will get revisited again but this time it final gets the justice it deserves and is directed and made right . If Stephen king gave this a thumbs up in my opinion he has to be losing his mind . This has like a. D movie feel something that was very low budget and didnt cost a lot to make and it shows that way I'm truly bummed sorry my guy but you need to watch the original I'm questioning your movie ratings .
@AVAPopCulture3 ай бұрын
LOL dude I am probably older than you and grew up with the original... but you are comparing a Mini-series to a movie...I said it was rushed and I didnt like that but again, this is a movie NOT a mini-series you cannot compare the speed of the 2... this movie felt rushed for it's own sake regardless if you knew anything going into it or not... I dont know what you mean by CGI because there were more porblems with CGI in the 2004 version than this...there was a lot of "in-camera" and practical fx done on this one too mixed with CGI... if you are a big fan of the original, you'd remember that countless people over the decades have complained about it being too slow and trying to add in too much from the book...so in other words, they will never win with a feature film version because anything they do is being compared to a book and a mini-series..... comparing a mini-series to a feature film is like comparing a marathon runner with a sprinter...

@AVAPopCulture3 ай бұрын
LOL you cant destroy someone's opinion on "art" ...art is subjective.... also, if you were such a devotee of Tobe Hooper's version, youd know it was trashed for years for being too slow and adding things in from the book that werent needed for the story and changing big things from the book...go back and look at old reviews... just remember, when adapting a movie from a book, there are as many versions of that out there as there are readers who imagined everything about the story in their minds when they read it...and if you set out to compare a mini-series with a single feature length film, you are building in your own disappointment...it is not possible to do everything in 1 movie that you can do in a mini-series Widgett Walls Needcoffee.com Rotten score. A truly unfortunate adaptation. Was the head vampire supposed to be scary? Oh sorry--my bad. a vintage review: - it carries the burden of being made for television in the late 70’s so every jump scare is unsubtlely highlighted by a prolonged fart of high pitched trumpets and crashing percussion another from the Cleveland Plain Dealer Unfortunately, it changed the look of King’s lead vampire from a cultured villain to a ghoulish beast recalling Max Schreck’s makeup in “Nosferatu” (1922).

Not at all. There are good aspects on it (creepy vampires, good visuals, overall setting...), but as a book adaptations its clearly a failure. Many of potentially scariest and notewhorthy scenes (Danny Glick on the window, Mike and Mr. Burke encounters, Father Callahan vs Barlow, the final battle against Barlow...) are notably worse than the original TV series of 79. Just a 2 hours film proves to be insufficient to adapt this book, and you clearly fell the fast pacing and lack of character depelovement and dialogues undemine the final result. Its not bad, but neither good. Decidedly, below his old predecessor. Maybe better than 2006 version. Like and horror film its decent, and could be enoyable for casual viewers. But as an adaptation of one of Stephen King most memorable book (which I strongly like), its less than satisfactory.
