my life has been a succession of peaks and troughs and I can tell you, when you're in a trough having a car that needs nothing spending on it and will fire up eevry time and get you to where you need to go is priceless. Plus those old Toyotas were pretty economical too. When you're on a downer the Corolla is the automotive equivalent of an old, slightly over-weight labrador that you've known since it was a pup.

I've owned approx 15 cars. In 2017-2019 I owned a 2003 Yaris which I paid £695 for. I drove over 30, 000 miles as my son was very ill in hospital and it meant 100+ miles daily for a couple of months, then regular routine appointments and checkups for him. The Yaris cost me £8 for front pads, which I fitted myself, and it never failed once, and never required any other new parts, even tyres lasted the 30k. Even though we had a harsh winter (which Incidentally was when the car was needed most as this was when my son was in hospital) I never worried about transport. I sold the car for £500. The best car that I've owned by a wide margin, wind up windows, tape deck and all.

To be fair, that's nothing unique for Japanese car, Mazda and Honda are worse and Subaru is all that, but their diesels blow up. Still all of them are usually worse than European cars and yet they cost more. Also you should do your homework with any older Japanese diesel car, they are either fine or blow up quickly and turn into scraps. Scotty is right if you live in dry climate, only buy petrol models and only drive automatics. For anything else his advice isn't optimal and he's full of shit.

2:45 I'm willing to settle for "bland motoring." In a car, I want reliability and safety. A car that is cheap and easy to fix. My car is a tool like a hammer, screwdriver, or pliers. It takes me to work, to the grocery, and back home. My Toyota has 305k miles and was paid for long ago. Its dependability leaves me to concern myself with other things.
@ikaruga244 жыл бұрын
That is exactly right. It just makes you have peace of mind. I had an old Honda Integra (the facelift model) that i was the third hand that had it and while it made me smile and feel special i also felt special because every week i was visiting my mechanic because something broke down. The electrics were all over the place, the engine would just overheat for no reason, the A/C would frequently break down, the back suspension was not even and thus one of the tires always got damaged quickly, the automatic gearbox would act up on it's own and it would even shut down if i didn't manualy hold on the gas pedal...it just went on and on. I know it's a case of how it was used and maintained but the point is i did live with an unreliable car for over 5 years. The smiles were not worth it in the end. There was literaly no day and no moment in my life that my car was not in my mind on what new surprise was going to show to me next. I went back to an old hatchback corolla made in 2001 which i still own and still goes like new even after 265k kilometers (about 165k miles).

I dunno what it's like over there in the UK but people over the years have come to realise the superior build quality and ease of maintenance of Toyotas so many owners now demand a pretty penny for them even compared to luxury euro cars. Theres a reason why they call it the 'Toyota tax'. Also it's quite arrogant to say they're dull when they have a luxury and performance line of cars as well (Lexus). I think a better comparison would be with a Lexus SUV which IMO far suprasses range rover in terms of comfort and reliability.

I get your point about a car that 'puts a smile on your face' but, in the case of every last one of the cars you mentioned as examples, that smile will be very brief indeed and will soon be wiped off when the inevitable breakdowns start happening which makes the ownership of those cars a continuous nightmare. I'm talking from experience, whether it be myself or someone I know, that's why the current car I drive is a Toyota! Sure, it doesn't put a smile on my face the same way those expensive money pits did, but I'd take the peace of mind of knowing that my car will start every time and will never leave me stranded over a fleeting smile followed by months of mechanical/electrical headaches that I have to endure until I get rid of the car!

Now, if you want better design, more driving fun etc and those things are very important to you, then you'll have to look elsewhere. I bought a 2005 Corolla when I was between jobs and had to make every penny count. It had 150,000 on the clock. Since then I've taken it to 325,000. Everything you said is true - they're dull cars, not spirited or interesting but totally dependable. Heck, even a Volvo is about 100x more exciting to be in. I think I'll always keep the Corolla now as it costs pretty much nothing to have one. They sip fuel lightly, they start first time every time and as long as you change the oil and filters regularly they run quietly and effortlessly. And oddly, they're fairly comfortable too. If you scrape the paint or scuff the plastic, so what? I've only had two actual parts break - the door on one of the storage compartments snapped off, and the sun visor snapped. Both cost less than $30 to replace. I think of it like your favourite unfashionable hoodie that you wear around the house in mid-winter - it's not cool, but you use it because it works perfectly and it is comfortable. You get better clothes, but you always keep that daggy hoodie because you know it does the job.

If I relied on the more interesting things on my drive, I’d be forever pissing about fixing things. I simply can’t be arsed driving anything but my ancient Toyota a lot of the time. I don’t need to worry about parking dents, I don’t need to worry about some crazy electrical gremlins. I can jump in it, crash into any ditch/wall/kerb and simply carry on. But I understand most people tend to only have 1 or 2 financed to the hilt cars and are probably worried about losing face being seen in an old turdy-looking Corolla.

A Corolla doesn't get you miles per gallon, it gets you smiles per gallon. As a car enthousiast, I would take a Corolla any day of the week. I work on my cars, and some of those cars designs (non Toyota), I am like "WTF, who designed this stupid crap". The problem with rich car enthousiast, most of them don't work on their cars. Did an oil change on a Mercedes, where is the biiping dip stick to check oil level? Why Corolla, it's just simple, it makes me smile because it's so simple. Every single piece is there for a reason " oh look at my air suspension, I will have smooth ride. When they break down, it's a pain in the ass to replace them" Why change it if it works perfectly fine. The more I work on cars, the more I appreciate Toyota.

All I require in a car is for it to start and go and never break down. I have had numerous Toyota's over the years including an old automatic Corolla (a proper one, made in Japan) which I had for over 10 years and covered over 200,000 miles. Used and abused, it NEVER let me down once and required very little in maintenance. Best car I ever had. I also had a couple of Celica's and a Avensis. Again, supremely reliable.

I don’t get why people say they’re boring with no personality. I mean, aren’t most bog standard commuter cars in the same price bracket like that? It isn’t meant to be a Range Rover or BMW M3. I have a 2005 Yaris 1.33 and it’s quite nimble and entertaining to drive.

I'm one guy who prioritizes reliability, because I just expect stuff to work once I've forked over my hard-earned cash. Is that too much to ask for? I don't need quick acceleration, sportiness, or large dimensions. Cities are getting increasingly congested and roads in my country are in rough shape, so those features will either be wasted or become a bother. The only equipment I want is AC, cruise control, and an AUX input. If the car has those, goes, turns, and stops when I want it to, and doesn't make my ears bleed on the motorway, we're off to a good start.

For those of us fortunate enough to be able to run more than 1 car, I think something like this is a perfect second car. Sure get yourself that sports/luxury/classic that makes you happy. But a dull, drab but supremely reliable Toyota makes a perfect daily.
@Beagleman19964 жыл бұрын
I feel like old Corollas and such could be handy as second cars alongside the BMWs and Jaguars and the like; a shopping car or town runabout that you don't worry about scratching up like a luxury car. I will say that, from an engineering standpoint, I do find enjoyment in basic but well-thought-out cars that just work, hence why I like old Toyotas and Hondas.

Then bought a 2zz powered 2003 corolla with 190hp which makes me grin like a raving lunatic. It's bonkers. It makes it all the better because of all the haters who think it's bland and then you open up the taps and drive them back into their seat with the lift. Great brand. Reliable. I finally have a car that will not fall apart and have to be replaced before 100,000 miles. It is a 2013 Toyota Corolla. I have had it for almost 2 years and zero parts failure on a 8 year old car. I only have to do maintenance and tire rotations. The only time, my car goes to an auto shop is for its annual state inspection. So, Scotty is right about the reliability of Toyota cars. The purpose of a car is to get somewhere without problems. Anything other than that is just a toy for adults. I do not need a toy. I just want a car that is reliable, lasts twice as long as most other cars and doesn't cost a lot of money to own. Not everyone is looking for high performance.

I own an 05 Toyota Avensis estate (T25) 2.0 Diesel, which would rival this Corolla as one of the most boring cars out there, but after owning a Volvo V70 petrol - which almost drowned my finances - i learned to appreciate it's dullness 🤣 great video. Love this channel.
@seankelly76162 жыл бұрын
My first car was a 2004 Toyota Corolla, 1.4 litre petrol. I paid 4000 euro in 2013 for it. I drove it for 8 years, did over 150,000 miles and it never, ever, ever, ever gave one single issue. Oil, brake pads, disks and tyres. Wash, rinse, repeat. Bullet proof. I got rear-ended a couple months into owning it, the other car was a write-off and the Corolla had a slightly warped rear bumper, I never even had it checked. I recently bought a 2019 520D. Its glorious, lovely to drive, I feel great driving it. Its fun. But... in many ways it is the bullet-proof, reliable work-horse nature of the (older gen) Corolla that define them and give them character, in spite of their dull, vapid nature. A bit like a donkey. And everybody loves and admires a donkey. I still have the Corolla. And I'm almost certain that I'll have it longer than the BMW.
@Mike-dk7wj2 жыл бұрын
Well of course these very expensive, luxury, high-performance gas guzzlers will be more exciting to drive than a Corolla, but not when they refuse to start and not when they are on a breakdown truck and in a garage having a long, outrageously expensive repair. I speak from experience. Give me a Corolla and their Japanese ilk every single time. Scotty Kilmer is the sanest man on the planet.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, we purchased a Toyota Corolla Hybrid , mainly for its fuel economy ( and the wife is somewhat of a greenie) which it’s brilliant for. Easily gets 1000kms in town per tank, but it’s devoid of any type of pulse..... even Mr Bean would prefer to walk. So we also decided on a bit of a weekend toy ( which has turned into a daily drive for me) this being a BMW 123d (E82) which is a great bit of kit for its price - yes it’s economical at 6.3/100 but you don’t have to club it like a harp seal to get to the speed limit let alone the open road limit - where a lunch and a paper it’s required to pass the time like you do in the Toyota !! Great content - keep it up ( and no not the one where you need the little blue pill)

@yeoldegamer51124 жыл бұрын
Toyota Corollas are like VW Golfs, just with the added bonus of reliability and actual mechanical quality, not just perceived quality by the plastics and rubberized textures. If you want excitement you go for the GTis or whatever high performance versions that appeared over the years. Although reliability/quality did take a dip with the E12 1,6 litre engines that consumed a lot of oil and needed recalls for exchanging the engine. Sadly this didnt cover all cars so there are some out there that end up sounding like diesels with too thin aluminium blocks and need a litre of oil every 1000kms. Although by VAG standards this is considered State of the Art and perfectly acceptable on their engines of the same era ... Anyway, in most "normal" cars you make your own excitement by the way you drive or where you go to. Fun could be had in a 1988 VW Polo Fox with 45PS. It was already really slow back then and had no equipment but it could still be fun to drive if you hooned it 😃

My wife and me grew up 6 children we never had money to buy a new car, so I drive what I find in great numbers at the junkyard, in my case Audi, you see I live about two miles away from the Audi factory and I was very pleased with them, besides you can build in many parts from Skoda, Seat and VW. Here on the streets of Germany are 16,000,000 cars from VW and they land after a time at the junkyard. My previous car was an Audi A3 1.9 TDI which I bought with 319,000 km on board and I drove it till it reached 704,655 km when I overturned on the motorway and was forced to give the car to the junkyard (you see God takes the best first). So you can drive what you like. Scotty gives tips to people who go to the repair shop with their cars and are there depleted of their money and I find that if you are someone who barely makes it from a months to the next then he is totally alright. Toyota has a better quality, but in Germany where I live there are only 1,500,000 Toyotas on the streets and I barely find something at the junkyard. On the other hand I repair on my own and almost never go to the repair shop. I once bought a Mercedes for 250 DM and repaired it on my own....God bless you.

I love Toyotas...for the reliability. It makes me feel special, that I spend only on regular maintenance . At a max of 77mph legally in the UK, seriously a car is not something to waste money on as an investment in luxury. Luxury on the road = quiet, comfort, peace of mind, safe, reliable, great rust proof protection, does not get the attention of thieves or neighbors., what's not to like. Especially when only you knows how wonderful your car is, while all the BMW drivers are on 1st name basis with their auto engineers, who of course also love these drivers for their assured repeat business. Buying used, definitely not a Range, or a BMW, no way, unless you are loaded, and if loaded - c'mon go ahead and stop being a cheap skate and buy a new car... new BMW, new Range, or new Toyota, that's the ultimate. If you are really so concerned about luxury - get a new car, not someone else's old junk that they've farted on the seat loads. Luxury = new, and if you cannot afford new, just zip it and drive, you have no right to comment on luxury, cos you do not know what that means - new car smell, being the one to take off all the rubbers, nylon coverings on the seats, only delivery mileage on the speedo. fresh tires, 5 or 6 year warranty, all inclusive, that superb tight feeling from the perfect compression of a new engine... Now that is luxury, being the 1st person to read your copy of the manual. if you really want excitement - up to 77 mph, buy a Porsche - not a BMW or Range Rover...

My earlier comments are my opinion, nothing controversial, that would demand such a remark from you. You can call me boring, but fart - that's taking it too far. That in any language is insulting. You would not call your parents a fart would you. Why then say such unpleasant things to anyone else. Please learn to respect others. We live in a different world now, a world where all lives matter and all of us deserve and demand respect. Do the right thing - learn how to speak to others appropriately in public, and on the Internet. You have a name, a registration with KZbin, and you can be prosecuted for being insulting on the Internet. And you can be reported to KZbin, which in this case I will do. Driving in the UK is boring and weary because the speeds are low, it's full of cameras, lengthy traffic lights, terrible traffic jams and the roads are narrow and usually with little to no pavement which requires doubled attention. My father was one of these “Toyota” people. Well, not with Toyotas but with Hondas. He’d lived a lifetime of driving boring, bland, gutless cars with “highlights” being “metallic silver paint” or a “well-laid out instrument cluster” 😴. Eventually, with a bit of persuasion, I got him to realise he only has one life, so he started buying exciting cars. He traded the Honda life to drive about in a Supercharged Jaguar... and ironically, NOTHING has went wrong, yet. He’s also traded in my mum’s 2017 Honda HR-V (yeah, they actually made a 2nd gen) for a new Volvo XC40 (I know that’s nothing special, but it’s well out of their usual comfort zone)

I remember selling loads of these Corollas back in the day when I was trading cars, great to sell crap to drive. As you quite rightly put it if you are a car enthusiast of any kind life is too short to be running around in this. Best to send them to Scotty! You are also right about drivers here in Spain also the crap road layout and the stupid law about how to circulate a roundabout but that hasn't stopped me having a nice car, I just don't dare park it on street in town I always use the underground parking mights cost a couple of euros but my car is safe! Personally if you only come over once or twice a year and it's not in the middle of summer you are probably better off just renting a car when you are here. Car rental out of peak holiday season is so cheap here and you have no headaches with car maintenance, ITV / MOT, tax insurance depreciation etc. Legally you can only keep a UK registered car here for 6 months after which time you have to register on to Spanish plates which is costly and an exercise in itself!

Any car can be fun and enjoyable to drive however Toyotas generally just don't encourage you to drive that way but you can if you want to have some fun. They are reliable and dependable and for most people thats the most important thing in a car. If my car doesn't start up in the morning I am down £125 on loss of earnings straight away and thats before whatever issue it happens to be is fixed most people can't afford to have that kind of thing happening all the time and I certainly don't want something thats going to let me down. I have a 2016 Toyota Auris 1.2T its a manual its very reliable, its nice to drive and handles well, has plenty of power and feels comfortable at speed and can comfortably do over 90mph all day long down the motorway. The air conditioning is insanely cold in the summer which is a big deal for me. Its £30 a year tax and I average 50mpg in it and achieve 56mpg on a long drive. I do plan on getting something fun but I want to buy my first home before I do that so until I've got my home I will not be getting a fun weekend car. I've had the car for over 3.5 years and it'll be staying around for a lot longer yet.

The "buzzing" in the brake pedal is likely the AntilockBrakeSystem. Earlier ABS brake pedals were still mechanical, instead of fly by wire, and the pulse would feed back through the pedals. If no lights are on the dash it is probaly just a little more sensitive than others. A 20 year old Toyota with only 40,000 or so miles is a good buy and could go 20 more years if they still make parts for it. Oil and filter changes are about all that's needed on them.

My reasoning behind owning a TOYOTA is this: It's good enough and reliable enough for me to use until I can afford to own something more fun and at that point I probably would need a daily, a job the TOYOTA would be perfect at so I wouldn't need to sell it. It doesn't have a soul until you realise it has taken part in some memories such as «What is love?» playing on the radio just after you've dumped your girlfriend of four years or the simple fact it starts every morning except that one time it didn't because the battery was 12 years old. The TOYOTA is that trusty friend which you don't have much fun with but you go for a drink with to have a decent discussion, he's always there when you need him, he never lets you down and never judges you despite the fact you might be a bad human being at times and he always forgives you. You see I can't say I'm passionate about my Auris but I have tremendous respect for it.

The "thrills" of a car are all nice and good and i myself have several times thought to get something "special" for me but i always end up on the reliable Toyotas. There is a reason as to why Toyota is the number one manufacturer of cars worldwide. It caters to the poor without making them feel poor and it caters to those that truly want the best possible reliability they can get their hands on. As someone who has went through a couple of unreliable car situations it just isn't for me. Being stranded on the motorway with 55+ degrees Celcius because your car broke down is not the best of experiences.

A Toyota will get you from A to B reliably and cheap to maintain. A money pit non-Toyota will eventually get you halfway to B from A and require frequent or expensive or both in maintenance. It is a trade off. Price vs. Practicality or Form vs. Function or Style vs. Substance. Your pick.

Some cars are so ugly that they are almost beautiful. This Toyota isn’t one of them, but as you say the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In 2011, did a roatrip in the US (NYC - New Orleans - Key West) with a Toyota RAV4. It was quite bland in every way, lacked steering feel and was wobbly on higher speeds. However, it did the job (5000km) without any issues. The next year had a new mustang cabriolet. Having a cabriolet in California was great but in Nevada the engine failed after 4 days of driving. Fortunately it was a rental and could just switch it to another one.

well, it allways depends on the budget. because yes, life’s too short and you shouldn’t spend 1/2 or more of your income on your car. i’d prefer to have a dull drive as this and let it take me to vacations, roadrips and so on than do drive a luxury vehicle only from my home to my workplace and not have the resources for anything else.

@@HecKaTorN i see your point and i agree with you 100%. However, if we don't generalize that topic as much, and discuss the matter of driving enjoyment, there are plenty other cars that don't cost much more to buy/maintain, and offer more charisma and driving pleasure.
